Well, I now see that most of the problem was that I had downloaded the
Launchpad jar from the Getting Started page which still links to the Sling 7
Launchpad :(
My question still stands I guess, but this specific example has been fixed.

starting from a brand new Sling 8 launchpad instance. The problem started when
