Re: [libreoffice-users] Query about privacy

2022-11-05 Thread Robert Großkopf

Hi Jodi,

Hi Libre team

you are writing to a mailinglist where users try to solve problems for
users.

I’m based in Australia and looking to use your office products. I
wanted to know if the content of what is typed in your word
processing document or spreadsheet document is something that can be
seen by your system or third parties if I am using your desktop
versions or online versions of your products?

You are using your desktop versions only on desktop. There are some
functions, which will use the contact to www, if you will allow this.
Tools → Options → LibreOffice → General: "Send crash reports to The
Document Foundation"
Tools → Options → LibreOffice → Security options and warnings (a comlete
dialog appears here)

Tools → Options → LibreOffice → Online Update

If you are using a cloud for your documents the cloud has nothing to do
with LibreOffice.

If you are using a product like Collabora Office, which could work also
as online version, you will install this office on a server you want.
There is no server, which is hosted from The Document Foundation for
online office.

Regards

Robert

[libreoffice-users] Query about privacy

2022-11-04 Thread Jodi Rolph
Hi Libre team

I’m based in Australia and looking to use your office products. I wanted to
know if the content of what is typed in your word processing document or
spreadsheet document is something that can be seen by your system or third
parties if I am using your desktop versions or online versions of your products?

Sometimes I am typing information that is highly confidential, and I need to
know about security of the content I am typing. It is a requirement that I
keep confidential information confidential.

Where are your servers located for Australian users please?

If your organisation is hacked, is there any risk that a hacker could see the
content of my documents or spreadsheets for example? Or is it all solely kept
on my desktop, or is there a way to keep it solely on my desktop?

In Australia, Microsoft for example has Australian based servers which is a
requirement for my purposes. I’d rather not just stick to Microsoft or Google
products, but I need to know about the safety, security and confidentiality of
the information I type into your products.

Thanks so much for your help,
Kind regards
Jodi

[libreoffice-users] query re. LO 5 ...

2018-03-22 Thread anne-ology
... this new version seems to be lacking a great feature which I
enjoyed in the LO 3;
back then, & on the MsFt-compatible computer, I was able to
make PPs, saving each version then I would place each of these together to
save only the best parts.

But this feature seems to be lacking now - if it still exists, could
someone please let me know how to access. Yes, I can see how to insert
images, ... but not how to insert PPs.

Maybe changing to a Mac wasn't a good idea after all; I sure wish I
knew how to get it to quit attempting to change the spelling of words & how
it only pretends to remember passwords part of the time.

  That's because LO is compatible;
opening a document in LO is handled differently from
copying/pasting.

  If you're looking for a reason for this;
well, some of these folks on this list should be able to help
you -
sorry, I'm not one of these gurus ;-)

In fact, my most recent computer problem arose a few months ago -
when sending out a newsletter,
I do not attach anything although I do often include URLs ...
how some of these URLs appear as attachments to the receiver has
me stumped.

Thanks, a table could be configured.
The interesting part is that I could save the document as an odt file and
the tick boxes still worked as an odt file, even after closing and opening.
I just couldn't copy the tick boxes to another odt file.
Cheers, steve

Hello Anne,

Waow. Thank you for making my private mail and question public,
especially when I had mentioned the mail to be private.

The reason I asked -and I asked this in private- was precisely not to
sound arrogant, trying to belittle you or anything of that sort.

>From what I understand, you did not know the answer to the question you
asked. It is perfectly normal not to know, and perfectly normal to
ask. However, given the actual nature of your question, and the fact
that you have been around the project for quite some time (and a
moderator of the user list?) I would have expected you to know the
answer and then I thought that you were trying to have Sophie point at
the right URL. I was not sure. So I asked in private, knowing asking
such a question in public would not be taken the right way.

I apologize for having dared to ask a question in private and if that
question was taken the wrong way. It really wasn't meant to be.

Charles.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Query

2014-01-19 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Can Base directly connect to a Lotus Approach database and use it as
the back-end?

@Ernest, Have you still got access to the old Windows and thus the
Lotus Approach directly or was this an upgrade (or a machine exchange
or some sort)? I take it you exported the data as a ".csv" file and
that is what is looking like a flat spreadsheet?

Alan B's way of making a form sounds like the best as it should allow
easy data-entry. If you need people to be able to access it in only
read mode then it might be good to make a form in Writer so that they
have all the tools they are familiar with

Since Approach used the dBase file format as its default, did you import
the data using the LO dBase import filter? If you did, it's likely that you
imported it into LO Calc, which is a spreadsheet program. You can open the
spreadsheet in LO Base, but it will be read-only.

Please let us know the operating system us are using and the version of LO
you are using, along with more details, such as whether you really need the
capabilities of a relational database and the kind of reports you need to
produce.

As already suggested filtering can limit the number of rows that are
displayed. If you prefer to see the data in a form (which shows only one
record at a time regardless of filtering) rather than what appears to be a
row in a spreadsheet...

1. Open your LO Base database.
2. Select "Forms" from the column of icons on the left side of the window
3. In Tasks, near the center top of the window, select either option. I
suggest selecting "Use Wizard to Create Form..."
4. Use the options in the Wizard to create a form that displays one record
at a time.

"Arrangement of the main form" options *except* "As Data Sheet"

If you haven't already found this link
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications#LibreOffice_Base_Guide
it connects to several varieties of documentation. A full manual which you
apparently found and several smaller guides as well.

I don't have any idea what is causing your problem "...I cannot copy the
sections..." The link provided above goes to user guides in both PDF and
ODT format. Individual pages can be printed from any of these documents.
And, anything in those documents can be copied using the usual method
- select with mouse
- right click selection
- click copy

- paste copied text/image into destination

[libreoffice-users] query text on base

2013-09-28 Thread yahoo-pier_andreit

I'm starting to use base, reading help I found:

Examples
='Ms.'
returns field names with the field content "Ms."

and

Querying text fields
To query the content of a text field, you must put the expression
between single quotes. The distinction between uppercase and lowercase
letters depends on the database in use. LIKE, by definition, is
case-sensitive (though some databases don't see it that strict).

It seems that I can query this fields

abcd
asdf
sadr
erte

with 'a' and obtain

abcd
asdf
sadr

but it doesn't works and it seems I have to use LIKE '*a*' to obtain

abcd
asdf
sadr

is this the correct behaviour or it is a bug??
if it is the correct behaviour in the help I think it should be
something like this "returns field names where the field IS "Ms.""

is the LIKE command the correct way to find a portion of text in the field??

what I have to use to have a non case-sensitive query??

manythanks, ciao, pier :-)

kind of like with LO

anyway, there are Windows versions.

I tried a back-up utility that looked great until i used it to
restore a bootable Windows and found the Windows boot-loader was
completely lost because things were not in exactly the right place.

in my experience Windows7 puts some kind of 'metadata' file at some
exact location in the middle or towards the end of the 'boot'
partition; it screws up if it doesn't find it exactly where it expects
it. thus one has to be cautious about resizing a Windows partition
with non-Windows software.

Someone suggested using dd but to grep it through some archiving
tool.  I did fix the Windows restored drive but by installing
Grub2.  Grub2 survived the back-up and restore process but it felt
like i was cheating because the whole purpose was to restore the
machine to exactly the way it arrived from the store.

I'm going to ask about grepping a dd through an archiving tool on
http://www.linuxquestions.org

to see if they can give me a good idea of how to actually write the command.

it's easier just to google it (I always forget the syntax); lot of
useful pages but perhaps this is a start
<http://wiki.eeeuser.com/backup_restore>.

the thing about dd is that it is _exact_ so suppose you have 30g on a
100g partition; dd will copy all 110g including 'empty' space. this
also means you cannot restore to a partition that is smaller than
100g.

this is good for that Windows 7 issue since everything is exactly in
place. I'd be more inclined to shrink that partition using Windows,
thus avoiding the metadata problem, and then back up, etc.

Re: [libreoffice-users] query re. LO crashing ...

2012-12-05 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
If rsync is available on Windows then it might not be so easy to charge people
so much for apps that do back-ups.  Unless no-one knew about it of course.

I tried a back-up utility that looked great until i used it to restore a
bootable Windows and found the Windows boot-loader was completely lost because
things were not in exactly the right place.  Someone suggested using dd but to
grep it through some archiving tool.  I did fix the Windows restored drive but
by installing Grub2.  Grub2 survived the back-up and restore process but it
felt like i was cheating because the whole purpose was to restore the machine
to exactly the way it arrived from the store.

I'm going to ask about grepping a dd through an archiving tool on
http://www.linuxquestions.org
to see if they can give me a good idea of how to actually write the command.
Regards from
Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] query re. LO crashing ...

2012-12-05 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
grsync has a nice pretty gui front-end but uses
rsync
to do the work, of course.  Rsync works from the command-line and has more
options but GRsync is easier for point&click users like me.

One advantage is that it keeps permissions intact whereas copy&paste or
drag&drop tend to twist things so that the current user can read/write.  Not
something you want with system files.

I was just making the point that LO's User Profile is happy to let the user
mess around with it quite a lot.  Evolution's gets really grumbly about it and
you soemtimes have to export your stuff from inside the program, then upgrade,
then open the new versions and import.  VERY different from the friendliness of
LO's user profile.

Btw thanks for the warning about hard-drive noises.  My new machine at work has
started making occasional noises but it's so intermittent i was ignoring them.
Good idea to back-up now right!?!  I used to know someone that would always
leave it until it made horrible grinding noises but then he kept losing data.
I'm really glad i am not living in a hot, sandy, windy desert anymore!

Regards from
Tom :)

it's a utility for transferring files, especially backing them up. so
I do a frequent backup of certain directories I have on a server to my
home computer. rsync is fast and will only make copies of stuff that's
not already at the destination (if you set it to work that way).

I think the 'r' stands for 'remote' but I don't know; the source
doesn't need to be 'remote' though. I just backed up one older
external drive I have (was making funny noises) to another newer one.

Re: [libreoffice-users] query re. LO crashing ...

Hi :)
Once you get to the "Roaming" folder it should be pretty easy to figure out.
Most OpenSource programs will have their UserProfiles in there, just pick the
one that is relevant = in this case the LibreOffice one.  From then on there is
only about 1 folder in each folder until you get to the right place.

   THANK YOU!

2012-12-04 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
So, your user profile is in

C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\LibreOffice\3\user

Hmmm, how to get there?  In Win7 can you open a "My Computer" folder and then
navigate from there?  I don't play around with 7 much but it seems reasonably
ok to me.

Re: [libreoffice-users] query re. LO crashing ...

2012-12-04 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
Probably best to start by renaming your User Profile
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/UserProfile

That tends to be the best and fastest fix for anything weird, especially things
that suddenly started behaving weirdly for no readily apparent reason and which
did work properly previously.  Also does sometimes fix odd things in fresh new
installs.

In the old days or with older style programs you would "get back to factory
defaults" by doing a complete reinstall but that is not the case with
OpenSource software and some proprietary software seems to be learning the
trick too now.  So, nowadays when you do a reinstall programs tend to pick-up
on your old settings and keeps your galleries, templates, Extensions and all
the rest intact.  To get back to factory defaults you just rename the folder
that all those settings and configurations are in.  That is the User Profile.

By renaming instead of deleting you keep all your old stuff but have just
effectively hidden it so that LO is forced to generate a new one.  Later you
can copy&paste chunks from your old profile into your new one to regain some of
your old stuff.  If weirdnesses have occured then the most likely cause is
apparently 3rd party Extensions so you can probably get almost all your old
stuff back.

Regards from
Tom :)

I think this it is not much of a problem.
Options / LibreOffice / OnlineUpdate / check now.

or go http://www.libreoffice.org/

Installation is very simple, just install, and LibO takes the previous setting automatically. Its a
5 min job. I takes more time to get the dust from the old typewriter.

Today I would install 3.5.7.2 and next week or so upgrade to 3.6.4

Anne,

Oops, looks like the Wiki maintainers have removed the graphical
CAPTCHA.  The "math problem" performs the same function and allows
screen reader assistive technologies to function (although easier to
circumvent).

So, solve the "math problem" and complete the registration (if you've
not already done so). Then navigate to the QA pages and  edit to put
your name in the pool.

http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/QA_Team

Unfortunately, one more hoop for you to complete will be to ALSO create
an account on the Bugzilla system hosted by Freedesktop.org-I would
strongly recommend you keep these two sets of credentials in sync so you
don't confuse yourself.

Create the account here:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/createaccount.cgi

The Document Foundation bugs and requests are all filed under the
LibreOffice Category on the hosted service-but you'll have access to all
product and project Categories of the bug reporting/tracking system so
it will be a little overwhelming.  Just pay attention and be methodical
to make entries in the correct category. You'll get help, but not a lot
of hand holding.

And a big thank you for Volunteering.

Stuart

RE: [libreoffice-users] query re. volunteering w/ LO

2012-10-08 Thread V Stuart Foote
Anne,

Correctly completing the CAPTCHA ("Completely Automated Public Turing
test to tell Computers and Humans Apart") is your key to establishing an
account on the Wiki site maintained by the Document Foundation.

We all have to pass that test to establish an account. And then, as we
all do, you must authenticate with your personal account to make edits
or add new content to the Wiki.

Have a read of this Wikipedia site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAPTCHA
and you'll understand what the intent is.

Stuart

   Thanks for responding;
I've been attempting to do just that -
it states I must log-in to the wiki site ... so I attempt
to set-up an account ... each time it states there's some math question
with a blank to fill-in to prove I'm not some robot - but not finding
this, I continue on only to be sent back to the initial log-in page ???

HOW does one avoid having to sign-in to this wiki site before
being able to access the LO portion of the site ???

I've looked all over the page, but cannot locate where this
supposed question/blank is located ???

Has no one else been required to log-in to the wiki site first?
...
is this something new they've added? ... is there some help/contact page
to send questions - and where they will respond with an actual answer?

Have you attempted to create an account per the first link? (Upper
right hand corner) And do you have cookies enabled? This is under
Firefox 15.0 on linux. Where are you getting this "math" from? There
is no math involved and no mathematical answer required.

I am just an end user without the knowledge required for QA work but
had no trouble joining the list. Just followed the directions!.

[libreoffice-users] query re. volunteering w/ LO

2012-10-04 Thread anne-ology
Back when I received this response [2nd below], I attempted to
follow these steps -
but found that #1 is impossible; there is no 'math' problem
which is to be answered in order to log-in [WHERE is this to be found?]
Therefore, the log-in merely goes round and round, stating this
error, yet never explaining HOW to correct this error ;-(

After trying - and with the same results - half a dozen times, I
wrote this Joel back - [1st below]
a few days later, he finally responded but ONLY to having
received my e-mail, rather than responding to HOW to log-in.

When I initially offered to help, I did so in good faith, yet now
I'm thinking that either that initial letter and/or his response was some
joke;
I'm asking this list for their thoughts and possibly an
explanation to this;
I happened to notice that some from this list, were listed on
that log-in page ;-)

answering some math question -
I've clicked on each link on this page yet have not
located the problem nor the blank to fill in???

   I don't understand.

[libreoffice-users] query re. fonts ...

2012-07-18 Thread anne-ology
... Is it possible or not to keep one font as default?
in using Impress, each time I add text, I have to re-add the
font, et.al.

Is there some way to make the font the default for each particular
file? ...
I use differing fonts with each file, but only one per file.

Has .5 taken care of this? - if so, I'll upgrade now.

The way I get the slide pane to go to the left side of the Impress
window: while holding down the control key (Ctrl) while double clicking
the slide pane banner. (Double click just to the right of the word Slides.

You do the same thing to anchor any floating toolbar in AOO.
