How did you apply the patch over qmailrocks installation?
Did you have any error from patch?
You should at least examine smtp_rcpt and post it.

I've managed to compile vpopmail previously, but have now upgraded to mysql 5 and PHP 4.3.11.
My config is as follows:
./configure \
--enable-logging=p \
--disable-passwd \
--enable-clear-passwd \
