Re: [vdr] Hearing-impaired DVB subtitles

2008-03-07 Thread Markku Virtanen

Maybe slightly off topic, but plain cable digital receiver
Topfield TF6000COC seems to get confused as well with this
DUT-setting. Sometimes these subtitles gets activated by itself
allthough not preselected.

This activation by itself is fairly new feature,
because receiver has been working flawless a long time
so I guess recent changes have happened in
broadcaster's side (no updates on receiver end done recently)?

That dut track is subtitle in sound.. And that way it should be sound
 track
 and not subtitle.
It's special. It's sound track where computer is reading subtitles in
 lound,
 for those who cannot read.

 Only YLE use those.
But that track contains plain old DVB subtitle bitmaps.
How can a computer read them out loud?

I believe JJussi is mixing things up a bit. What he describes is audio
subtitling, which YLE has chosen to send labelled as a Dutch audio
track. It seems that they have started to use Dutch also for Finnish
subtitling for Finnish spoken programs. The reason for that choice I
believe is the absence of Dutch language in Finland and hopefully not
the misconception of all the Dutch being hearing impaired... :)

The instructions for people who want to use the audio subtitling is that
they should choose Dutch as the primary audio language and Finnish as
the secondary. Obviously they had the same in mind for DVB subtitles.

Re: [vdr] Fast-forward and subtitles

 Hi,

Besides DVB subtitle support, version 1.5.10 brought also support for
nicer fast forward implementation. From the HISTORY file:

 - Implemented sending all frames to devices that can handle them in fast
forward trick speeds (thansk to Timo Eskola).

If I recall correctly, the original patch by Timo Eskola together with
the subtitles plugin allowed also subtitles to be shown during fast
forward. This nice functionality is missing from the current
implementation. So, just to let you know... :)

There is no audio during fast forward, so why bother displaying subtitles?

I tend to fast forward recorded programs quite frequently
(skip dull parts :) and it is very annoying that DVB-subtitles gets
confused and misplaced after each fast forwarding action, it may take a
long time before those are displayed again. I'd prefer burned
subtitles because those are always displayed and always in synch of the
programs itself regardless how you skip recording + or -.
Really missing old VHS-tape age, never problems with subtitles what so ever.

Also I think people who are used to dubbed programs do not realise how
wonderful it is to be able to turn down audio of televison program and
just use subtitles to watch it bearly hearing the audio. Specially handy
when you don't want to use headphones but be able to watch programs
without disturbing others (audio down).

Effort to have DVB-subtitles syncronisation after fastforwarding is a
very, very good feature, so to speak. Wanted behaviour is exactly as
older burned subtitles way of working, always there.

Re: [vdr] Straw poll: stable version 1.6.0 now?

2008-02-03 Thread Markku Virtanen
Hello Klaus!

No.

As it has been pointed out generally speaking texting support is not
complete and if new version is released now, it never will. The problem
here is that functionality additions are not finished, only partially
and adding new stuff is started simultaneously.

Only reason for me to switch over from pathced 1.4 would be that
VDR supports complete subtitles and teletext.

When you set up a new stable version out what are you going to manifest
there? Version 1.6.0: texting support yes / no? Partially yes /
partially no? Take your poll... :)

The work you do with VDR is absolutely great but need for closure like
texting support has been there for years and VDR still is not going to
support it properly not even 1.6.0 out of the box? Patch and patch again?

I'm just wondering can't one major issue be properly finished before
hopping to another big issue, HDTV support? It can wait like texting
support has been waiting for years for closure. Then texting support
would be done and then feel free to do what ever is needed to support
demands from HDTV users what ever schedule you decide. :D
