Did you try stopping / restarting the backup services on the client and on
the backup master server?

Thanks, I did in fact as a course of action, turn off VSS last night as I
noticed someone has re-enabled it and hence why the backups started to fail.
This seems to have worked - I also disabled tracker.exe too on the Win2k3
box
Thanks for the clarification

All
sorts of reasons Geoff, all down to the type of file size and data stored on the
tape, whether the data can or cannot be compressed, and if the robot or tape
drive can compress the data.
I
think others have given opinions on this, but thats my
opinion

Is the client updated to the same version of NBU with the same MP applied?

What I
would do, is verify if any changes have been made to this server (ie:
applications installed, AV update ect) that could be causing a memory
leak.
As an
after thought, anything that I find misbehaving, I tend to verify its running
the latest version and the OS

tells me that the tape is probably full and the Netbackup application cannot
find anymore tapes to use - hence... it fails!
The
Media Lists Report tool will show you whether the tape is full, or is near the
capacity of the tape. Hence, if compression is no good, the
Hello
Does somebody know of a su - command for windows, I have looked at runas but
it seems to be interactively only.
Unfortunately I can't just change the Netbackup Services users.

I wonder if you are looking for local Administrator rights on the Netbackup
computer, which will effectively allow you to make changes to this box

Can you not SUSPEND the jobs, to allow you to perform this action and then
restart?

As far
as I can tell, nothing at all had changed on this box.
Since
it's a lab box, there's no change control process, so no logging of
changes.
It's a
Solaris box, no AV running.
I
ended up killing the vxsvc process and disabling the SXXisisd startup script,
untill I can
No. But, I just found out that another admin was not patient with a netbackup
stop and so used kill -9 on the bpsched processes.
The processes were then like a zombie and would not respond to any attempts to
suspend/cancel/slap in the face.
Think maybe I could just go into a directory and wack
Whack the Admin! But if this happens again check 2 things.
1) Device Monitor, see if any tapes are awaiting to be loaded
2) Check the client, stop Netbackup and kill any backup processes
3) Whack the Admin again to make you feel better
4) Look for another way to whack the Admin
:-)
Simon
Whether it's a kill -9 of a process or a Glock 9 used on a fellow admin
you're likely to have problems afterwards that make you question the
wisdom of the kill. :-)

Does anyone know which kernel sysctl or configuration option or netbackup? option is related to this error? Is it the number of maximum file descriptors or the fd limit?Anyone ever get these in the past and then fix the issue?
Thanks,Justin.
The services are running as local system, the problem is that I need a domain
user in a backup_exit_notify script to able to do something on a share on
another machine.

Only
time I see this is when there are no more tape drives available for Netbackup to
use (ie: 50 jobs running, all using the tape drives and 20 queueing because
resources are busy).
How
many jobs is your netbackup running concurrently when you get these
messages?
I've used a Freeware Utlity called SANUR in the past.

It looks like its no longer in development, but downloads are still
avalible.

Thanks for everyone who responded.I did some digging and found that we are using two retention levels for our backups, and the fact that NBU doesn't mix retention levels completely explains why we get some backups fail with 96 errors, but others before and after complete with no problems. We

What version of
NetBackup are you running?
There are some

a touch file you can put in:

I get these all the time. However,
when I first put in SSO, I had an unusually high # of them, like more than 50

to get these down to a more reasonable # and I think it was adding

Run the Netbackup services with a domain account that has the necessary
permissions on both machines. Domain admin might be overkill, but it's
a good place to start.
