Hello, I have had a case open since last week, still waiting for Symantec to contact me. I have found out from engineering that the key (LTO-4) encryption key from the master - media server is sent over the wire unencrypted. It is obfuscated but not encrypted. The only way to do that is use

If all you need to do to migrate to the new media is scan them in the library and assign them to the correct media pool. The gen4 drives will be able to write to the gen3 tapes and read from the gen2 if you need to do restores. If you plan on phasing out the older media when they expire you

The LTO spec says the drives should be able to write to media one generation back, and read two generations back. So an LTO4 should be able to read and write to LTO3 media, and read from LTO2 media. Like Jeff said, use barcode rules to assign the LTO2/3 tapes to a different media type and/or

Thanks for the info on the spec. I was under some impression that Netbackup (remember, we're on 5.1 here) had an issue with using three different media types. Maybe this is not the case but it was something I had in my head. If this is not so, it sounds like we can move to LTO4 fairly quickly.

Nate, If your library is not checking the suffix for tape density, the barcode label doesn't really matter. It should figure out what density the tape is when it looks at the tape and will write accordingly. I did this at one point because our gen 3 tapes labels came in with L2 on the end. We
