[Veritas-bu] NetBackup does not encrypt the LTO-4 encryption key over the wire if not using NBAC

2010-05-03 Thread Justin Piszcz
Hello, I have had a case open since last week, still waiting for Symantec to contact me. I have found out from engineering that the key (LTO-4) encryption key from the master - media server is sent over the wire unencrypted. It is obfuscated but not encrypted. The only way to do that is use

Hello, I'm wondering what the CLI command to deactivate Netbackup media servers is. From the GUI, you can drill into Media and Device Management - Devices - Media Servers, and the right-click on each individually to deactivate. What is the equivalent CLI command? (I presume it's nbemmcmd

Forgive me for what may be a straight forward question, but our last backup admin has left and I'm doing my best to step up and keep our systems moving along. I'm looking for a general outline of an LTO3 to LTO4 conversion with Netbackup 5.1 (upgrading is on the list, but we can't wait to complete

The drives are currently LTO4, the tape is LTO2/3. All we need to do is migrate to LTO4 media. Martin, Jonathan wrote: Are you looking to replace an existing LTO3 library / drives with LTO4? Or are you trying to copy data from LTO3 to LTO4 tapes? -Jonathan -Original Message- From:

If all you need to do to migrate to the new media is scan them in the library and assign them to the correct media pool. The gen4 drives will be able to write to the gen3 tapes and read from the gen2 if you need to do restores. If you plan on phasing out the older media when they expire you

Are you saying we can have LTO2/3/4 all active in the same library? I was under the impression we couldn't start using LTO4 tapes until we phased out the LTO2 tapes? Jeff Cleverley wrote: If all you need to do to migrate to the new media is scan them in the library and assign them to the

The LTO spec says the drives should be able to write to media one generation back, and read two generations back. So an LTO4 should be able to read and write to LTO3 media, and read from LTO2 media. Like Jeff said, use barcode rules to assign the LTO2/3 tapes to a different media type and/or

Thanks for the info on the spec. I was under some impression that Netbackup (remember, we're on 5.1 here) had an issue with using three different media types. Maybe this is not the case but it was something I had in my head. If this is not so, it sounds like we can move to LTO4 fairly quickly.

Nate, Generally people don't like mixing media levels within a pool but it can be done within the read/write compatibility between generations. You may need to keep an eye on your barcode labels and your tape library. Most libraries allow the barcode scanner to use the last 2 charactors of the

Nate, If your library is not checking the suffix for tape density, the barcode label doesn't really matter. It should figure out what density the tape is when it looks at the tape and will write accordingly. I did this at one point because our gen 3 tapes labels came in with L2 on the end. We
