[Veritas-bu] Restore Failed Status 5 - NBU 5.1 MP2 Master Win2k3
Title: Message Guys Wonder if you can help - trying to perform a restore from a month end backup from 6th Nov 05. Trouble is, in December, the Tape Library that was in use blew up and has now been replaced by a fancy new HP EVL Library using LTO3. The previos Library was LTO2 Using the BA and Restore tool, Netbackup sees the images and knows about the tapes. I loaded the tapes into the library, verified they are there and kicked off the restore. Title: Message You are going to have to change the drive type of one of the LTO3 tapes to LTO2. It is Backward compatible to read the tape, however, NB won't load the tape into a drive that is not of the same type. The image has the tape type. Make sure that NB sees the tape media as the correct type. By looking at your tape names, you may even have LTO1 media. You can do a bpimagelist -L -backupid "your backup job id" and it will show you what media type the image says it is on. RE: [Veritas-bu] Restore Failed Status 5 - NBU 5.1 MP2 Master Wi n2k3
Title: Message Bobby Ok this is not going to be as easy as I thought! The Master is sharing 4 tape drives (all LTO3) to 2 Media Servers as well. At least I now know why NBU wont load any tapes into the drives! Any ideas on how I change the tape drive? I thought the whole idea of backwards compatible was that in situations like this, the LTO2 tape would be read by the LTO3 drive?? Any help is really appreciated! RE: [Veritas-bu] Restore Failed Status 5 - NBU 5.1 MP2 MasterWi n2k3
Hi William Well I believe I got it sorted, simply by using the GUI and changing the format of the drive from HCART3 to HCART. Attempted a restore, tape loaded, data recovered and its all there :-) I did not need to change the volume name, because this was a month end, with a retention of 12 months. The tape was also known by NBU, because the tapes went into the correct volume pool. In the next few months, we will have exhausted our needs to use LTO1 tapes, and my understanding is, as long as NBU knows about the tapes and they have not expired, there should be no need to change or add rules for barcodes? Tell me if I am wrong. But the restore does appear to have worked fine. I am going to eject the tapes now :-) Any comments warmly welcome. Thanks again for the responses and leading me into the right path Simon Weaver Technical Support Windows Domain Administrator EADS Astrium Tel: 02392-708598 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 08 February 2006 11:27 To: veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu Subject: RE: [Veritas-bu] Restore Failed Status 5 - NBU 5.1 MP2 MasterWi n2k3 I think you need rather to change the media type of the media. Currently they are HCART (as they are LTO1) - the L1 suffix shows that. This command may be what you need: Change a volume's media type /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/vmchange [-h volume_database_host] -new_mt media_type -m media_id Whatever you do make sure you 'suspend' the tapes so they cannot be written on by NBU. I don't think LTO3 can write on LTO1 but that will not stop NBU trying. Probably change to HCART3, but whatever the drive is. I am a little surprised you library is configured (or the old one was) to return the media type suffix to NBU (the 'L1'). Most people set up the robot to return the leading part of the barcode only, or tell NBU to mask out the L1, L2 etc if the library cannot do that. Otherwise you don't get many unique barcodes! Bit of a messy log (unless its come through my email system as a bit scrambled). Basically, from my own experience I have found is that tracker.exe is running on a client and there are multiple instances of bpbkar running (too many for my likeing) So I end up turning tracker off (if it's a windows client machine) I also turn off any AV, disk defragging software where possible too! Do the jobs re-queue and then eventually run and complete ok? Can also see this when multiple clients connect to the master server at the same time (ie: 50 or more so at once). Would probably need more info on your setup as well. Anyhow, that's from what I have seen in my environment. How powerful is the master server. Do you have multiple policies all running at the same time when this problem appears (ie: 7 policies all running at 7pm each evening) Thanks Simon Weaver Technical Support Windows Domain Administrator EADS Astrium Tel: 02392-708598 Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: Asiye Yigit [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 08 February 2006 13:11 To: veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu Subject: [Veritas-bu] Unable to process request because the server resources are busy Hi Gurus... [Veritas-bu] Help finding the status of tapes!
Problem: I have a few tapes: L00123 L00124 L00125 I need to find the status of these tapes across multiple master servers. Is there a text equivalent to list all of the tapes in the: * Media and Device Management - Media In the Media Manager's Media List? I have several tapes I need to find the status of, whether they are frozen, expired or scratch, etc... bpmedialist does not show the complete listing of all of the media that has ever been in the robot. I am looking at the documentation now but thought I'd send this out if anyone knew it off the top of their head? Thanks, Justin.
[Veritas-bu] Command to list media servers?
Say I have a number of media servers, besides looking in /usr/openv/netbackup/bp.conf for them, which may also include non-media servers, is there a command that will show your currently registered media servers? Thanks, Justin.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Unable to process request because the server resources are busy
The status 134 means there aren't enough tape drives to handle all the requests. In particular, this looks like a duplication right? If you run backups and duplications at the same time, the scheduler (pre-6.0) isn't fully aware of duplications and also, doesn't track the drive usage in a real-time fashion. Therefore, the scheduler can end up oversubscribing the resources (tape drives). The end result is that the media server will figure this out, give the message below, and requeue the job. -Tim On Wed, 8 Feb 2006, Asiye Yiğit wrote: Hi Gurus... RE: [Veritas-bu] Unable to process request because the server resources are busy
This problem is actually addressed in 5.1 MP4 by allowing the use of /usr/openv/netbackup/STAGING_JOB_KB_LIMIT /usr/openv/netbackup/MAX_STAGING_JOBS as explained in technote 280398 Brooks, Jason [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2/8/2006 11:23:45 AM So, will this mean a decrease in these errors, if seen in NBU 5.x, when one migrates to NBU 6.0? RE: [Veritas-bu] Help finding the status of tapes!
Your loop below searches the media servers for a volDB, not a list of master servers. vmquery is specific to the volume database, there's only one per environment and it's usually on the master server. Frozen/suspended is per media server, but the volDB contains everything else. This is ugly but: for tape in tape1 tape2 tape3 ... do echo ## $tape for master in master1 master2 master3 ... do vmquery -h $master -m $tape 2/dev/null if [ $? -eq 0 ] then for mediasvr in `bpstulist -M $master | awk '{print $3}' | sort -u` do bpmedialist -m $tape -M $master -h $mediasvr 2/dev/null done else echo ## Tape $tape not in VolDB on $master. fi done done This can be prettified a bunch but it's functional. Watch out for line-wrap issues in this posting. Note also this this is untested but I think, if nothing else, that the logic is sound. -M -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, February 08, 2006 7:58 AM To: veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu Subject: Re: [Veritas-bu] Help finding the status of tapes! Re: [Veritas-bu] performance?
Unless I am missing something here IPMP only increases throughput on the outbound side of the server. Media servers are typically bringing data in from the network. Without further fiddling, that is correct. If you could get some clients to use one IP address for the media server and other clients to use another, then you could have each of those addresses using separate links. IPMP doesn't give you any tools to help you balance them, though. -- Darren Dunham [EMAIL PROTECTED] Senior Technical Consultant TAOShttp://www.taos.com/ Got some Dr Pepper?
