Good day Larry,
Synthetic backups will not save you space as you will still be
creating a full using the last full and the incrementals. You will
however save time as you can have the synthetic backup run in the off
peak backup time, thereby decreasing you backup window.
This can save time if
We use RMAN for a backup of a smaller (300 GB) DB. It doesn't require
stopping the database.
For a large (2 TB) Oracle DB we do the BCV thing outlined below. You
don't have to run Oracle on the media server because you do a standard
rather than an oracle backup. (E.G. do not use RMAN - just

Check the manpage for bpbackup.
You list all the files you want backed up in a textfile, and feed it to
bpbackup with the -f option.
Once backed up, a regular restore of all files in that image will drop
everything on the destination box.
Keep in mind the file attributes and ACLs will be

I'm testing some vault duplication on a Linux master server. Since

I don't have a linux box handy to check, but I'd imagine iostat would do
exactly that.
On solaris, I use iostat with the -xnp args and follow it with the
interval time and number of intervals.
For example:
iostat -xnp 5 100
Gives me 100 shots on 5 second intervals of

In the sense that I can't use 'iostat' to check the speed, yes. I think
windows would have the same issue as well.
In the sense that NetBackup isn't reporting on the speed, then I imagine
