I want to add that netbackup 7 clients does not have VSP.

Because--and I'm sure you know this--now that Microsoft no longer
supports its server OSes which don't have VSS, neither can Veritas (no
Win2000 in NetBackup 7)--hence no longer a need to provide OTM/VSP.

And I don't remember anyone complaining so much about OTM/VSP for all
the years when Veritas provided an open-file backup solution because the
clueless OS *vendor* did not.

You can move only free tapes. If the tapes are free then you can select all
tapes from the GUI and select right click-change.

If your tapes are not empty then you have to duplicate the backups to new
tapes.

2010-05-24 Thread WEAVER, Simon (external)
Hi Boris
Not sure of the version of NBU you are running, but I thought it was not
easily done, as the vol DB and images DB need to be consistent, and
changing the tapes from say, Pool 1 over to Pool 2, could cause some
headaches.

In the Admin guide, I see a VMCHANGE command, but I am not sure this is
what you are after.
I found this on the web http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/248093.htm
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/248093.htm
a little old, but it may still be relevant.

Unless someone else has a work around - What about duplcating the tape
from POOL1 over to a new tape in POOL2 ?

[Veritas-bu] Storage Unit

2010-05-24 Thread David Turner
I am looking for a storage unit basically a NAS device that supports cifs,
iscsi, and nfs. This device also must support FC. I need about 20TB.

The plan is to backup archive data to this device. Data that hasn't been
touched in 2-5yrs and then send the archive data to tape.

Currently we are looking at the Overland Storage Snap Server 620. The only
problem is it doesn't supports FC only LVD Scsi tape drives.

Any suggestions or recommended products is appreciated.

So you use the GUI at all?
Highlight all the tapes in the pool ( they must NOT be assigned - you cannot
move assigned tapes)
Right click and choose change - then pick the new volume pool for the tapes and
click ok - all done.
Then delete the old pool.
Quicker then command line script.

This would only make sense if you have a high-enough de-dupe rate (at least
10x) - otherwise just buying disk makes more sense.

You could go with something like a Windows or Linux server with locally
attached disk. Not ideal, but it's archive data, right?

Or OpenSolaris running on an x86 server with locally attached JBOD,
using ZFS for RAID and volume management. Snapshots and conventional
compression are builtin to ZFS, and recent versions have deduplication
(if you're careful to spec out enough RAM and SSD cache).

The OpenSolaris builtin COMSTAR software provides iSCSI and FC targets
hosted on ZFS-based storage.

You can build this yourself, buy it from Oracle (this is their
Unified Storage product), or check out Nexenta's distribution.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] re-assign all tapes from one volume to another

Hello Folks,

I need to re-assign all existing media from the existing volume pool to
another, then I want to delete the old pool.

Do you know a command and possible script how I can do it?

Thank you,
Boris

Re: [Veritas-bu] Oracle Backup Problem

2010-05-24 Thread Marianne Van Den Berg
Please send dbclient log?

Please confirm - which name is configured in policy?

Which client name is sent from media server/client? Is this client name
hard-coded in script? Does it correspond with client name in policy?

Please check bprd log file on master. Look for incoming request from
Media server/client ip address. See in same log if master server
resolves ip address to correct client name as per the policy.

Yes, Oracle running on Media Server as a Oracle client and I have a
scheduled backup configured in an Oracle policy for this client. This
scheduled backup was running well before. It just happened in this last
week.

When backing up an Oracle for two hours, it shown a message said that
failed.
