[VFB] Re: Tony.....

2009-08-29 Thread J Balmer
W/ all the talk about packed hair I decided to check see what I had
already tied. I'm backed up as it is didn't have time to tie something
new. So I opened one of my bass boxes pulled out a couple. Tried to take
pics front, side, top bottom, experimented w/ light put them up on my
page of Mark's Ning site; http://pureartflytying.ning.com/profile/JBalmer

Please note: these have all been fished have been crammed in a box for
more than a year. The sizes are as follows eventually I'll put this up as
well: minis - the white / blue white / orange are probably on a size 12
hook, the other two are smaller hooks; the mouse 1 mouse two are probably
size 6 the small mouse sm lies are size 8 long.

[VFB] Re: Small saltwater stainless hooks

2009-08-29 Thread Neville Gosling
Don O

I wasn't thinking when I said stainless steel because many of the saltwater
hooks are tinned or nickel plated which are possibly even better. I have
discovered to my amazement that I do indeed have some size Mustad 10 C71S SS
hooks, left over from a past fly swap, so I am going to give them a try. The
trouble with me is that I have a lightning fast response to a tug on my
line, when all I want to do is let the fish turn with the fly and hook
itself. I find it hard to slow down and as a result my hookset tends to be,
shall we say, a bit on the strong side.

Subject: [VFB] Re: Small saltwater stainless hooks

Nev,

Locating small #10 and ss fly hooks is pretty hard. You can usually find
a box of 100 #10 ring-eye in a bait shop, not in a fly shop. You may have
to bend the kirb, but that's not hard. Also look into circle or semi-circle
hooks if you will have any long or slack line fishing.

If you are tying simple patterns, tho, it may be better to go ahead and tie
disposable or re-tyable flies on regular bronze hooks. Current thinking is
that it's kinder to the fish to have an easy-to-dissolve hook in their
mouths if they break off. A stainless hook takes forever to corrode, and
the fish will usually weaken during that time and get picked off by a
predator. Mustad, EC, and other hook-makers are making heavy bronzed 3XX
wire hooks for saltwater use, as a #10 std. stainless will bend or break off
in a big fish. These heavy wire hooks also supply the weight needed to get
the fly down.

DonO

My good buddie Bob Meade...(legendary Realistic fly tyer, goes by the
handle Mantis because of his signiture fly being a Praying Mantis), has
contacted me and given me the go-ahead to spread the word..SO HERE
GOES. He and a mutual friend of ours, David Martin.both members of my site,
are launching a brand new website on Mon. Here's the urlgo to
http://bobanddavesauctions.com The site will basically work exactly the same as
ebay.and they are takin' very nominal fees for their
servicesi've already tested the site and it's working pretty good.
They'll have all the bugs worked out by Mon. with any luck. The site will
auction and or But It Now ONLY fly fishing tackle, artwork, books, flies, and
etc., etc., etc...tyin' lessons, trips maybe.i'm not sure. Go there and
find out what's goin' on for yourself. I've been workin' with Bob and Dave for
the last 3/4 days helping them work out the kinks. In other words, doin' Mock
auctions and buy it nows. Starting Mon., i'll have flies for sale there.
This is going to be an auction site for very serious collectors..so get
registered and open an account.and start selling and or buying. You'll need
a Pay Pal account...to pay in your dues so-to speaknot actually
dues.but a dollar amount that they can deduct from for covering your fees.
The fee for selling an item is 50 cents and on top of that you can be charged
an extra 50 cents or a buck for Prime Location Listing, etc., etc...but 50
cents is all they will charge for the most basic listing of an auction item. So
you CAN sell something, wether it be by auction or a but it now item.for as
little as 50 cents. For now, there will be no end of sale feeno
commission. They're going to see how that goes. Check it out. mark.

Get back to school stuff for them and cashback for you. Try Bing now.

Here's a pic of a fly i did a few months ago.a while after we got back from
England...it's on one of the hooks i bought from Jens Pilgaard of Denmark,
when we were over there...he was tyin' at the same show...he sells
them at his website, http://www.flytying.dk This is one of the ones he has in
his new Artistic Series of blind eye hooks.they're $10 eachwhich is
not a bad price seein' as how they are made one at a time, hand forged, hand
filled, hand painted and Japaned individually. There are some Wild designs t
his new series..check it out. Click on the pic for an even better
look.

[VFB] Flies for Pink salmon in saltwater

2009-08-29 Thread Neville Gosling
I'll tell you what I need them for. Every odd numbered 2nd year, there is a
run of pink salmon (humpback) to this part of British Columbia - basically
the Fraser River sytem. Every even numbered year - the pinks run to other
areas of BC- notably the Queen Charlotte Islands in northern BC.

I have usually fished for pinks in the Fraser in past years, and although I
have caught them in saltwater I was never as successful as I felt I should
have been. it seems that I have been using flies that are too big, because
the pinks in saltwater feed on euphasid aka krill which are small - hence
the size 10 hooks. I didn't know that you could get saltwater hooks in size
12. I will try and post a photo of the type of fly that I am tying in the
File Section of Google groups.
