Thanks, Joyce, for the back-ground. That's a good idea for a thread. Each swapper explains: the background for his/her fly design the method of fishing the intended quarry on what kind of water Reply: I looked for this tie on the web, couldn't find it. Does it float long without floatant? There's another Byron's midge on which he uses deer hair and foam to get it to float. Are you satisfied as to how this fly pattern is coming out? Re: [VFB] Rope-dub swap photos
It's called Byron's midge because Byron Sargeant is a fishing friend who suggested that this pattern would work for what we saw..I tied it up and it worked great in our area. Because it is made with UV dub, which is a naturally floating synthetic, no floatant is needed. We just throw it to the area where we saw the fish rising, let it float over his head, and he took it. That began the success with this fly. The starling feather seems to wobble in the current giving the fly action. Re: [VFB] Rope-dub swap photos
I will jump in here with the thread re: my burned-wing Adams. I love to fish the dries, and there are not many as effective as the Adams. I have tried lots of materials for all the parts of the fly. Nothing new here. I am using burned wings now (which I take from Indian necks) on mayflies rather than search across a neck for a matched pair of hackle tips for wings. Burning wings is a great way to make a matched pair of wings in a hurry. Terrific silhouette. I like Hareline sparkle dub or flash dub, or something to do with the reflective holo fiber they put in some of their dubbings. Still working on the tapered body. If the body turns out too bushy, I will trim the fibers back until I can see the body segments The rope-dubbing makes a great tapered segmented body. My destination is usually one or two willow-lined streams with beaver ponds, but lately the guides from the fly shops in Salt Lake City bring their guests all that way to fish for my Browns. In the past I would fish Hobble Creek (which Joyce speaks of ) and I knew most of the Trout there by their first names. But Hobble Creek has changed over the years, with private property issues, heavy traffic and overgrowth, it is still in my back yard, but not as fun to fish. Then there are the rattlesnakes... Re: [VFB] Rope-dub swap photos
Ok, Don, thanks a lot for your nice comments on my fly. You should see the box of rejects which will join me on my next fishing trip. Hopefully on Saturday, My son will take me out... Things are changing, To my fly: Background: When you announced the swap I got my new issue of our local ff mag. It has the Wet Stonefly pattern in it. Well, not ropedubbed, and they did omit the tails. But I found the construction of the wing, with the mallard feather and the reinforcing floss (brown wing case) very interesting, and decided to convert it to a roped pattern. Method of fishing: Dead drift, as for a large stonefly which has felt dead into the water. Quarry and kind of water: Stonefly water, rocky and loaded with trout. [VFB] re: steelhead flies
Don, have you ever gap wrapped or rope dubbed any steelhead fllies. I've a bunch of purple perils to tie, and I'm thinking that rope dubbing them would be quicker and look as good as the standard chenille and yarn type bodies. What do you think? Re: [VFB] Rope-dub swap photos
Hi Larry; Great idea on the burned wing feathers, as with the others I admire the rope dubbing effect. Larry Johnson Springville, Utah Joyce Westphal westpha...@gmail.com 9/9/2010 1:20 PM It's called Byron's midge because Byron Sargeant is a fishing friend who suggested that this pattern would work for what we saw..I tied it up and it worked great in our area. Because it is made with UV dub, which is a naturally floating synthetic, no floatant is needed. We just throw it to the area where we saw the fish rising, let it float over his head, and he took it. That began the success with this fly. The starling feather seems to wobble in the current giving the fly action. Does it float long without floatant? There's another Byron's midge on which he uses deer hair and foam to get it to float. Are you satisfied as to how this fly pattern is coming out? [VFB] opossum fur for dubbing source
http://www.paradisefibers.net/Possum-Spinning-Fiber-p/47151.htm Check this out, ever since the rope dub swap I've been searching for a source of the dubbing I used. It was a old box from Al Neimic of Chicopee, MA, but I noticed a little lable about possum blend. This fiber place has all sorts of wools, and fibers from different animal, I think it could be a dubbing source. Has anyone tried blending and dying? Re: [VFB] opossum fur for dubbing source
Joyce, I use Australian 'possum all the time- just love it. Have a bad of all kinds of pieces. With the rope-dub, I can get as many 'looks' as I want, plus I can take the dub off of different places on the animal to get more different looks. See the rope-dubbed flies on my website. Reuven is sending me a possum pelt, should be here soon. I'll send you some. If you just want to play and share right away, I'll bet you can pick up a grade 3 pelt at Moscow Hide and Fur for a reasonable price. Look for chinchilla while you're at it. Note to all ropers: If you have fur on the hide, like possum, muskrat, etc., rope dub clippings of fur without blending. The guard-hairs will become hackle-tips. Once you do blend a fur, try ice-dub as a hilight, and gold dubbing too. Re: [VFB] Rope-dub swap photos
Thanks Wayne. The wing is very easy, especially compared to using a grizzly hackle tip. The rope dub is much easier and faster than I imagined...
