[VFB] Re: [flyfishingandflytyingforpanfish] HUGE Rattler
--- Last week when my Son in Law was here , we went down to the dock. At the bottom of the ramp was a Copperhead on the dock. It did not move and on checking it out, we found it was dead, It looked like it was almost cut in half near the tail end. I am not sure how it got there, I think maybe a Heron got it and did not swallow it. Maybe it could of been one of the water animals that grabbed it and decided not to eat it. I guess we will never know. It was not a very big Copperhead, only about 14 long. Yesterday, my son and grand daughter were walking to the edge of of or property to check on getting a part off an old Ford we have parked there when they saw a huge rattler gliding across the yard. They ran up and got me, and wouldn't ya know it but the firing pin on my shotgun is broken, so I get my 22 magnum pistol and go out there. I spot him, and you know how ppl are about telling you the size of snakes. It's like telling you the size of the fish that got away. But this was one of the Eastern Diamondbacks you see on the TV shows, as in over 5ft long, and bigger than my forearm. But the weird thing is, even after I shot (and missed 3 out of 5 times, cause it's hard to hit a snake with an old revolver at 15 yards, cause that was as close as I was getting LOL). Anyway, through all that, he NEVER ratted a single time. I shot and missed. I shot again and hit him. He stopped dead in his tracks and I thought I had heart shot him, cause I knew it was a body shot. I shot again, and hit him again. (reason I know is cause after he had gone, I saw the blood stains on the ground) He still didn't move. His tail was straight up, and he had 7 or 8 rattles, each at least 3/4 across, but like I said, they NEVER once rattled. I missed him three more times, and had one round mis fire before he FINALLY started crawling off VERY SLOWLY. My son in law had heard the shots and came down with his shotgun, and we went out into the woods and hunted the snake for 30 minutes or so, but never saw him again. Man, that really scared me knowing how close he was to my son and grand daughter. He was a BEAUTIFUL snake as he had JUST shed his skin and his colors and markings were really bright. But he'll be dead and beautiful if I see him again and hopefully get more shots at him LOL. HAHAHA sounds like you need glasses or shooting lessons Chuck. If we ever get rattlers over here in England I'll give Jimmy or Dono a call. My mate is the same, he has a rat problem, they keep getting up on his bird table so he bought an air rifle to deal with them, reckons he has had about 40 shots and not killed any although a pellet did ricochet off a metal garden chair and nearly hit his wife in the head so he is getting closer to hitting something. [VFB] Fishing
Got to go fishing with my son and his wife on Wed. Big thunder storm was lurking so I took my time getting ready before carrying a lightning rod out on the water. After finally getting out I stared paddling my pontoon boat about 10 or 15 yards out, I looked down and both fly rods were gone. I looked back towards shore and saw one sticking straight up. Went back and got it but was really BUMMED. The one I lost was a Cortland Black Diamond 9ft. 5wt. And a Scientific Anglers reel. After getting my mind cleared I managed to get 4 small mouthed bass on a mosquito. Tried getting down with a sink tip and a wooly worm, but no luck. Stuck with what was working and got two on two casts. The water was like glass after the storm blew over. I've got to find a way to secure fly rods so I don't loose any more. Down to 11 now. Re: [VFB] Fishing
This is a true story. Some years ago when I was going out on Charter Party boats for Salt Water fishing we had a guy drop his rod and reel in the ocean. We stopped catching fish at that spot so the captain of the boat moved to another spot. After a couple of hours the fish stopped biting and we moved back to the first spot. You guessed it, one of the fisherman on the boat hooked into something. It was the rod that was dropped overboard. That is one in a lifetime chance. WOW Jimmy! That sure is a lot of rods. It was not the rod you gave me. I was going to use it next trip. I have been trying out rods that I haven't used in a while. Worst part is that I never got a chances to fish with it. I actually have a rather large treble hook with lead on it from a swap some time ago. At least it will get some action, trying to retrieve my wayward rod. Thank you, Alan Di Somma Sent from my iPad On Aug 10, 2012, at 1:52 PM, Jimmy D. Moore ray...@earthlink.net wrote: Dang, Alan! Tony, once years ago, when my Dad was a big catfishmerman, he hooked onto something just below the dam. Pulled it up and it was a beautiful red Ambassador 5000 reel and True Temper casting rod. He used that thing for another 10- 20 years. I inherited it and still have it. It works, but after all the reeling is a little wobbly. Right now, I have it hanging on my wall. Still beautiful, but to sentimental to use a 60 year old Ambassador any longer. JIMMY D Anthony Spezio wrote: This is a true story. Re: [VFB] Fishing
Jimmy, Right here in the White river over the years I have found several spinning rods with reels a load of lures an Ocean City Fly Reel that had been in the river for years by the look of it. I also found a wood plug with glass eyes on a stump. It is in real bad shape. One morning I was up at Tucker Shoals fishing and saw something shiny in the water. It was a ladies wrist watch. I still have it hanging up over my window in my room downstairs. Tony --- On Fri, 8/10/12, Jimmy D. Moore ray...@earthlink.net wrote: From: Jimmy D. Re: [VFB] Fishing
I did that too. Bout 40 years ago, but I DID get my beloved Zebco 202 back LOL..What I used was some of the old fashioned wire clothes hangers and clipped them, bent them so that when it was done, there was a loop (too hook the heavy cord) and 4-6 grappling hooks to catch the rod and reel with. You can also tie egg lead weights to the bottom where the hooks curve, so that you know they drag the bottom. Re: [VFB] Fishing
Alan: The clips will probably be best, as you can accidently break rod tips with heavy bungee cords. But my wife found some lighter weight bungee cords somewhere and we loop all the rods together with those, them clamp the whole bunch of rods to the boat after that. I never have liked breaking down my rods and reels (except for my beloved bamboo rod) down each trip, cause when I hit the water, I wanna FISH, not assemble rods and reels LOL, Chuck - Original Message - From: Alan Di Somma phxflyt...@cox.net To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, August 10, 2012 2:54 PM Subject: Re: [VFB] Fishing I plan on buying two rod holders for my pontoon boat. Re: [VFB] Fishing
When we are out fishing, we find $8-10 bass lures all in the bushes and over hanging trees, and I (if it's not too snaky looking, or infested with hornets) ease up there, pluck em out of the bushes, and my wife sells them out of her Boiled Peanut wagon, and I take that money to buy necessities, like root beer and hot pink chenille LOL... Haven't even gotten out on the boat this year TO find any :(:(:( Amazing to me that we have all these bass tournaments and those ritzy bass fishermen are like rich golfers who slice their balls (OH That hurt just to type it ROFL) but anyway, they thing nothing of cutting the line and tying on another high dollar bass lure. My Uncle used to work at Ft. McClellan near here and after work we'd walk the golf courses (this was in the early 70's) and we'd find brand new balls like Titlist (which was HUGE back then) Huge as in EXPENSIVE. Anyway, we'd clean em up and sell them for 2/$1 or 3/$1 and I'd make more doing that than I did at my job stocking groceries for Winn Dixie grocery stores at the time. I bet if there was a way to drag up all the lead that just my family lost right below the dam, cat fishing when we were kids, we could get rich off the lead as scrap Chuck - Original Message - From: Anthony Spezio To: vfb-mail@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, August 10, 2012 4:20 PM Subject: Re: [VFB] Fishing Jimmy, Right here in the White river over the years I have found several spinning rods with reels a load of lures an Ocean City Fly Reel that had been in the river for years by the look of it. Re: [VFB] Fishing
I second the drag a hook suggestion. As a child, I and my sisters would look for fishermen who got mad and threw their rods and reels into the lake. Often there was a bobber attached. We'd wait until they were gone, and then, without my mother's knowledge (none of us could swim) would throw a rock out near the bobber and Shep, the faithful dog, would run out to where the splash was, grab the bobber, and drag the line to shore. By careful pulling we could get the rod and reel close enough that we could wade out and get the pole. Of course, there was always the danger that the dog would get hooked, but we were lucky and he didn't. We quickly learned that a garden rake was the ideal gadget to fish for the rod and bring it up. Of course..we just were careful to dry off when we got wet so mother didn't know. I asked her once, when I was older, and she said that she knew and did a lot of praying for us, constant warnings, but knew we would play by the lake (in our back yard about 10 rods from the house). I had the ideal childhood, a horse to ride and a lake to fish as soon as I got my chores done. Re: [VFB] Attn. Don O.......
I actually tie some Clouser Minnows from Craft Fur. I believe that it the same thing you are talking about. It is small enough that I tie them for trout. I will attempt to take a picture and send it to you so you can see what I am talking about. Re: [VFB] Fishing
Drill a hole in the end of the garden rake handle so that you can tie a length of rope to it, then go back and use it as a grapling hook..try it and see if you like it. You may have to weight the rake a bit by tying on a piece of rebar. Good luck. I'd not give up for sure.
