Today I got a treat, I got to go fishing for a short while. I have not been
fishing for about eight months. My wife Dot had a doctor's appointment that I
knew would be a long wait. I put my fly rod in the car and we left. The doctor
has a pond right next to the parking lot at his office. I have fished there
before when Dot has to go in to see him.
It was overcast so I rigged up with a Sparkle Olive Dumbbell eye Bugger. Made
the first case and just stripped about two strips and Fish On. It was a small
Bass. The pond was thick with moss along the bank. so landing the fish was a
mess. It came in with a big load of moss on it. I made a few more casts and
decided the fly was too heavy with all that moss so I switched over to a sz 14
Chili Pepper. Caught another bass and then another. I broke off trying to land
the next bass in the moss. Tied on another Chili Pepper and the same thing. Got
a couple of bass and again lost it landing a bass in the moss. I was down to
one Chili Pepper. Lo and behold If I did not do the same thing and lost that
one.
I then tied on an Olive Bugger with a red bead head. The first cast produced a
Bass a few casts later another Bass. then I managed to hook a tree behind me
and broke off. Now that was four flies lost. I then tied on a Purple Marabou
Bugger and on the first cast I had a fish on. A few more casts and short
strikes I had another bass landed, again loaded with moss. I hooked up again
and the Bass got into the moss after a couple of nice jumps and I broke that
one off. Total five flies lost. I fished just over an hour and my wife came out
to the car just as I tied on a WRD. I did not get to cast it. I spent a lot of
time cleaning moss of my flies but it was a real good day fishing. I did get
photos of two of the Bass. All Bass were released unharmed. I landed a total of
ten Bass.

Re: [VFB] Bobbin

2013-05-18 Thread Joyce M Westphal
Check out the Norvise bobbin and Ekich automatic bobbin. I have both and
use both. The Novise automatically rewinds, but you do have to remember
that and hang it or put a hackle pliers on it when you are done with the
fly. You have to rewind your bobbin thread on the round bobbin but it fits
the hand nicely. The Ekich bobbin is neat in that it will accept a spool
of thread directly to the bobbin without having to rewind the thread thus
keeping the same tension on the thread that the manufacturer did. It has
the disadvantage that it does not have an automatic clutch, so when the
bobbin winds tight, you have to flick the thread spool up, let it rewind
and simply push the thread spool back again. You can find both of them on
the internet and, as previously stated, I have and love both. I couldn't
even think of tying without an automatic bobbin..it is the saving grace for
arthritic hands. Joyce

Not quite on the water but on the bank close enough to the water. The problem
was the moss along the bank, it extended as much as three or four feet beyond
the bank. Dot has another appointment next Monday, I plan to hit the pond again.

Tony,

I had a good day this morning and didn't even wet a line.

I went to help with this month's Project Healing Waters outing. Mr.
'celebrity' was there with his two boys. He had never fly fished. So
they went out in the boat with me. Another fellow came along who is a
really good 'coach' had Jeff and his oldest boy (12 yrs) casting pretty
well. The six yr old didn't try it - he used his Zebco.Quite a few
bluegills and bass were caught - all on Rick Zeiger's Goldie Junior
till the last 45 minutes, when they started hitting poppers.

I basically managed the boat in the light breeze that kept blowing us
out to the middle. But having one of my all-time favorite pro football
players fish with me was an honor. Jeff Saturday is the former pro-bowl
center for the Indianapolis Colts. Jeff is a true gentleman and about
as nice a guy as you would ever want to meet.

That was followed by a birthday party for two of my great-grandkids.

All in all a it has been a good day. But I'm pooped. G

a.

p.s.: We had a ton of vets and a ton of mentors. No vets were 'lost in
the shuffle'. Everyone had a great time.

I basically managed the boat in the light breeze that kept blowing us out to
the middle. But having one of my all-time favorite pro football players fish
with me was an honor. Jeff Saturday is the former pro-bowl center for the
Indianapolis Colts. Jeff is a true gentleman and about as nice a guy as you
 would ever want to meet.

That was followed by a birthday party for two of my great-grandkids.

All in all a it has been a good day. But I'm pooped. G

 a.

p.s.: We had a ton of vets and a ton of mentors. No vets were 'lost in the
shuffle'. Everyone had a great time.

Tony,

I had a good day this morning and didn't even wet a line.

I went to help with this month's Project Healing Waters outing.  Mr.
'celebrity' was there with his two boys.  He had never fly fished.  So they
went out in the boat with me.  Another fellow came along who is a really good
'coach' had Jeff and his oldest boy (12 yrs) casting pretty well.  The six yr
old didn't try it - he used his Zebco.    Quite a few bluegills and bass were
caught - all on Rick Zeiger's Goldie Junior till the last 45 minutes, when
they started hitting poppers.
