For those of you that don't know (I think that is most of you), Tony had to
have his other leg removed. They did it yesterday, and the last that I
heard from his son Bob, he was asleep in his room. His daughter and son in
law were there. This was a 50/50 operation and he survived again. There is
also a 50/50 chance of life threatening complications in the first 30 days.
They will only let 1 family member in at a time, so of course this is all
second hand for me. Just reporting what I have been told. I am currently on
the Conejos, and communication is slow. Will report further when I
 have more information.

I use the 16/0 size for my smaller flies and cann't fault it. It is very

 Hi Tony:

The REC recoil guides were fitted to my Swedish Guideline LeCie
double-handed rod which I brought back from the UK a few years ago. These
guides were the recoil single foot style as originally fitted to the rod.
The problem was that of breakage. Last September on my extended trip to
Northern BC for steelhead, I discovered first one, then two broken guides,
necessitating a trip to the local town for some emergency replacements (not
recoil) which I held in place with fly tying thread followed by a couple of
coats of Sally Hansen's. Then in January, on a lengthy day trip , I had
another guide break. Interestingly, the broken guides were the top two of
the middle joint and the bottom one of the top joint. In other words, they
were all sequential. Now, I'm not over lining the rod and I don't know the
cause, but each guide fractured in the same place, just as it leaves the
thread wrap. I contacted REC and at their request, I mailed them two of the
broken guides. They took a long time to respond and then sent me two
replacements, which was no good as they knew that 3 were broken. I felt the
whole lot were suspect and that they all should be replaced. I had a long
telephone conversation with Dave Lyons of the Angler's Workshop and settled
on complete replacement with Snake brand snakes with a fuji tiptop. This is
the only way that I could be reasonably sure that the problem should not
re-occurr. Maybe the batch fitted to my rod was just a bad batch, but I
wouldn't buy another rod with REC single legs and I provided that
information to Guideline's chief rod designer Lief Stavmo as feedback.

I like the rod, but not the guides.

Who feels like pooling resources to get good buys on pelts at Moscow HF to
divide up amongst swappers?  Like the CO-OP swap, the meister buys the pelt,
photos it, and cuts it up to divide amongst the swappers, who send in their
share + SH.

Buys range from dirt-cheap to taxidermy quality, many animals listed (dubbing
quality critters), and 3 pieces would be enough dubbing to last a very long
time.

The numbers can be set by the meister and swappers.  (If you want half a pelt,
find one more swapper.)

But a simple swap could go like this:  (Just a suggestion of an easy typical
swap)

So you'd get a chunk of tail, some dense back, off-color thinner belly. #1
2
swappers would want the mask for bushy flies.

There are hundreds of selections, so there could be many swaps.

Just a thought- one ore way to use the VFB for buying power.

so, by what Dono is saying , should we all just give our top five choices or
something, make a list, and then decide from that list what the final ten
should

be?  also, is the size chart on the 135's wrong?  the smaller the number the
bigger the hook?

them upby weight, on a blance scale that goes to 0.1 grams.  Hooks with labels

You can do that if only 9 others sign up.

It works in a block of 10.  Any portion can be doubled, but it just becomes 2

LOL, well I for sure don't want to buy 1000 of ALL of the ones I listed.
 (not
right now anyway) *Those were just my most-wanted ones.*
*Green is a duplicate of ones I wanted for swapping.*
700B could be used as a parachute emerger dry fly.
*For this to work, though, everyone has to agree on /10 styles sizes/,*
*so that they would get 1/10th of each 1000 hook bag.*
/*That's why I sent in 10 picks. I won't get all of the ones I want, but I
 buy
one of the bags.*/
If you only pick one, then what are the other 9 that you'll be getting 100
of?
What can you use for your type of fishing? *Remember the Whiting Co-op swap:*
Had to have 5 swappers pick 5 different saddles to divide up (I thing it was
5). Then you got 1/5th of each saddle- variety vs bulk and much better
pricing
than the 10-paks.  *But these were dry-fly saddles all,* a narrow range for a
particular fly.  Byard picked out lots of 5 by requests and availabily, like
midge saddles, and 5 co-oppers signed up for each set.  If you didn't want
midge
hackles or dry fly hackles, this was not your swap.
That's why I had a narrow window of *trout hooks*, but I could branch out
with
other hooks I can use. *Rick needs to evaluate* the requests and negotiate
the
*most favored hooks*. Swappers must give a range and not be too dead set.
Once
he has 10 hooks styles in 10 sizes that 10 swappers agree on, he has a
complete
co-op swap.  I will donate some hooks to Rick and some flies and make sure he
has enough $$$ for SH to make it worth his while.
Hardest part- 10 swappers settle on 10 hook models and sizes.
Send Rick the average cost of all hooks (once settled), so that you don't
 buy
1000 expensive hooks and get 900 less expensive hooks back.
Pay with Paypal or direct to Rick.
Send Rick a SABox with postage to be determined by Rick.  Include in box
whatever for Rick's efforts.
End result is that you'll have 10 bags of 100 hooks of styles and sizes you
want (1000 total) for around $45.
My 'tip' to Rick will be a 5-hook kick-back of each size.  Fair enough for
 the
work he'll do.
Once we work out the bugs, this method should work out as well as the
Whiting
swaps did.
And there's no reason we can't do another Whiting Co-op swap, even is Byard
 is
on a different venture right now.
Saltwater SS hooks should be a separate swap for those in salt water.

smart enough to have tied several of them so I would not loose the one and

the very first cast I caught a hand sized slab bluegill that I couldn't even
reach around to
hold him while I took out the hook. About nine inches long!! Missed one on the

I just thought the list needed a fish story for a change. I can post the

I have used something called Seals all purchased at bWally world and sealed
the gas tank on my truck and oil pan on another car the car is still holding.
Another way is to solder it using a iron that has to be heated on a gas stove.
hope this helps.

Chuck being vented means there is a little screw in the top of fill cap.
You screw in down to seal tank when not being used loosen when running motor.
You squeeze the bulb in line until hard start you,r motor and away you go you
don't have to squeeze the bulb any more it will set up a vaccuum Chuck Connell

It just dawned on me. I was looking up these external tanks and it says
they are vented. So, does that mean that instead of that bulb pressurizing the
tank, that it is just a primer to get the boat motor going, and then the boat
motor's vacuum takes over to siphon the gas from the tank to the
carburetor??? I need a lesson in boat motor fuel systems 101 LOL, Chuck

Or. Can I just go and buy a 3 or 6 gallon boat gas tank (the
red ones with the pump up bulb in the line), hook this to the 'male nipple end
where the fuel line from the built in gas tank used to hook up and run that???
It's been s long since I used a gas boat motor I have forgotten how these
things work. Since the gas tank will sit in the bottom of the boat, do you just
pump the bulb until the gas tank is pressurized, and then when the pressure
dies down, pump it up some more??? I think that's how these type tanks work
I know that may sound like a stupid question, but like I said, it's been 25
years since I even had a gas motor except for one little 2hp Yamaha motor that
was on my boat when I got it, but it had the on board tank and the motor sucked
so I sold it. Thanks a lot and don't laff too hard LOL, Chuck

Subject: [VFB] Gamefisher Outboard gas tank needed

Folks: I found a Gamefisher 5hp outboard last year in a local buy/sell
paper. Well, the guy wanted $125 for it, which wasn't bad. I got over there,
and due to a bad design, one of the bolt heads that holds the cooling cowling
on, had rubbed a tiny hole in the (plastic) gas tank. Well, it ran great, but
had this problem. So, the guy knocked it down to $75. I almost snatched his arm
off LOL..cause that's dirt cheap around here. Well, my master plan was to fix
the little 1/8 hole by taking a big pop rivet, putting an petroleum resistant
rubber washer on the pop rivet, then rivet it in. Worked great. BUT, I forgot
about the tiny gap between the rivet's body and the pin, so it still leaks a
little. Well, it just so happens that the leak is very close to the head and I
don't want to set the thing on fire. SO, does anybody know of anybody that
deals in these type boat parts??? If so, I can provide you with all the make,
model serial number etc ect. It's (I think) an early to mid 1980's motor. And
this particular type plastic, I have tried every type glue, or epoxy there is,
buyt nothing will stick to this stuff. I was just gonna take the rivet out, get
a large screw with course threads and tap it into the hole, but I'm afraid it
will vibrate lose and fall out sooner or later (sooner in my case with my luck
LOL). Anyway, I have searched ebay, Craig's list, the internet and can't seem
to find a gas tank. I know they made a LOT of these motors, and probably a
Sears, Ted Williams, or a game Fisher either one should work cause they're all
the same I think. Thanks a lot.. I'll even pay you a bird dog fee. I was just
watching You Tube videos and these little motors really haul butt to be as
small as they are and I'd like to do some fishing in the river this year.
Thanks, Chuck

The thread size is very important. Iy you use 6 or 4 the head will be far too
large.  Less is best.

material has to be smaller, hackle, feathers. Also the use a thinner thread,
0/8 works great. If you have more questions, i can answer specific ones for

Folks: I have a question on tying flies smaller than , say, a size 16. Or a
size 14 in some cases. Like, how do you get all the materials tied into (or
onto LOL) a Royal Wolff)??I have been reading as much as I can about bluegill
fly fishing and fly tying,.and I was just reading about tying foam ants, and
it said NOT to tie bluegill flies too small as the bluegill has a strong
sucking power for insects that drop onto the surface of the water and they'd
even take a size 28 in a foam ant and would hurt themselves as they'd swallow
a fly that small all the way down their throat. So, it said to go to a bigger
fly. like a size 18 or a 20. Well, I can barely even see a size 18 or 20 hook,
even with my reading glasses on, much less tie a fly on one.  Does anybody
here tie flies regularly in a size 18 or smaller??? If so, what is your
secret?? Thanks, Chuck

Re: [VFB] blending dubbing

2009-12-31 Thread BILL JOHN
Another method is to place your dubbing material in a sandwich bag.  Then get a
can of pressurized computer cleaner.  Push the tube into the opening of the
bag.  Give the material a blast.  It
really does a good , fast job of blending dubbing.

Joyce,

LOL, no rain on my parade.  I just don't pre-blend a lot of dubbings- this was
a special case.  I make 'quick-blends' for the rope-dub for color variations,
mottling, and graduations from light to dark, and I do those right on the
core-material when I start the rope.

On this occasion, the water blend was quick and easy and not messy at all, and
I didn't have to find any brushes, so it took only about 5 minutes.  The damp
natural fur dubbing was something I wanted to try to rope with, so I got that
in the bargain.  Wet chinchilla is next on the list, then wet syn-seal.  I'm
thinking the chinchilla will make the perfect sowbug if I can get the segments
tight enough, and the dampness may be the key.  (Like some tiers steam their
deer-hair before they pack it.)

So, maybe for some things, the brush method is great- especially larger
quantities for matching flies.  But I'm always slow to discard something
before I check out all of the possibilities.  (I've learned that through 35
years of engineering.)  I like the water-blend method and have some ideas and
experimentation to do with damp dubbing.  I'll even try the conditioner idea,
but I don't think the rope-dub will care once the dubbing is damp, or even
wet.   h  more ideas coming in.

One thing I'm thinking of is that the wet-blend method will also tell me what
natural furs I have that are naturally waterproof, and I'll make dry-fly
blends with those.  What about some natural oil, like preen-gland oil, added
to the mix to make a dry-fly dubbing (instead of the conditioner)?

We do have some doggie brushes upstairs, and a Shitzu and a calico cat.  Next
brushing will yeild some dubbings and I'll also try it your way with the
brushes.  I don't know what the old-fashioned wool cards are, though.

So I'm not discarding your suggestion, as it's a good one.  That's why you
didn't rain on my parade.  You just added another float to it.
And so my parade got longer,
and only my dubbing got wet.    ;o)

old fashioned wool cards. It takes a few minutes of rubbing the dubbing
makings back and forth between the brushes, and voila! perfect dubbing ready
to use. Surely beats the water method and the mess that brings. I'd never go
back to the messy, sloppy water method. Don't mean to rain on your parade,

I just tried something that worked well.  Has anyone else done this?  Beats
getting dubbing in my espresso via my coffee grinder.  I found one hit on

the coffee grinder method.

I needed to blend some rabbit-dubbing with some ice-dub, flash dub, quick
descent.  I needed a good blend and no lumps in the blend.  So I filled up
a tupperware dish about the size of a coffee-cup with hot tap-water.  I
added the rabbit dubbing and then chopped up the other 3 dubbings over the
container.

I stirred until everything broke up and was a well blended soup, than I
drained almost all of the water out, leaving the dubbing.  I stirred it one
more time to make sure the quick-descent was mixed in, then I poured it all
out through a paper towel to strain it and then used the paper towel to
soak up all of the extra water.

The result was a damp glob of well-blended hilited part-natural dubbing.
Working with it damp gave me a very tight well-defined segment.  But I'm
letting the rest dry so I can fluff it a bit and tie some fuzzy hares ears
that have cool colors mixed in with the rabbit.  These colors will
accentuate the segments more and give the fly some flash in place of the

Steely resolve in the face of the Perfect Feather
Posted: 01 Dec 2009 11:02 PM PST

Per request I’ll continue to post additional fly beautification tips in a
weekly format. These will comprise hardscrabble lessons learned somewhere after
beginner and before complete mastery.
Most tiers that tiptoe around the craft use their fishing instincts when no
instructor or book is available. Most of us started as dry fly fishermen and
it’s not surprising that most new fly tiers attempt the dry fly more often than
nymphs.
… which is too bad. Tying nymphs is far more forgiving than the delicate and
strictly proportioned Catskill dry. A novice tier can hold up some lumpy
looking stonefly and if critiqued can respond with “ … well, all the stoneflies
in _ Creek are fat.”
… and if I had been the unfortunate to task the fellow – I’d blush like hell
and backpedal in a hurry – never having fished over “fatty” Plecoptera …
The Catskill dry is completely unforgiving. It’s territory and techniques have
been practiced for more than a hundred years – and artistic license must be
defended, even for expert tiers.
One of those oft-mentioned-quickly-forgotten principles is made more difficult
in the presence of the Perfect Feather …

Above are two examples of the Perfect Feather; a foot long #16 grizzly saddle
hackle, and a well marked (lefty) Wood duck flank feather with perfect tips.
Both are treated with awe by the owning fly tier – and both can cause your fly
to suffer cruelly if you’re not diligent…

You’re a kid in a candy store, all those precious tips are in a straight line
and unbroken. Giddy, you fail to clip the center stem because it’s perfect too.
You forgot that all feathers are either a left or a right, even foot long
saddles and untouched Wood duck flank.
The wood duck will be your undoing twice. In the first case the stem will cock
one wing to the left, and in the second, the stem center will retain 9 or 10
fibers attached and you’ll have to compensate by yanking fibers from the far
wing to the near side to equalize that natural bulk.

The picture at right shows the Perfect feather now clumped together with the
center stem included. Note how all’s well – there’s no clue that anything is
other than perfectly straight.
You’re thinking of dumping all your “lemon-dyed mallard” – as the sight of the
wood duck with its pristine coloration, fine markings, and perfect tips – make
it so much more pleasurable to work with – even justifying the hideous cost to
lay in a goodly supply.
Unfortunately like Ulysses and the Sirens – their song is so beautiful, you’re
ignoring the approaching rocks …

Now you can see why you remove the center stem. The left side is thin and has a
different angle than the right wing.
The cause is simple. You had to pull the loose fibers over to the right side to
balance the two clumps – leaving the left, just the stem section. It’s thin
because the fibers are attached to the center spine and have no “give” to move
around.
We were lured onto those rocks consciously …

The picture at right shows the same wing as before. I’ve removed the wing from
the shank, clipped out the center stem and retied it back on.
Note the difference with the picture above. the left wing is relaxed, the
right wing is less dense and tighter – as you didn’t have to pull everything to
that side to compensate for the stem on the left.
That foot-long Grizzly saddle is just as bad. You’re used to applying six or
eight turns of hackle to your dry flies, but the lure of virtually unlimited
hackle means you add four or five extra wraps and crowd the head. Crowding
means fibers trapped in the knot that’ll wick the head cement right into the
eye.
It’s the lure of the Perfect Feather. You won’t find it mentioned in any tome
or DVD, and only your steely resolve to overcome it’s sweet song …

That trip was a blast.
I actually caught White Fish also.
We have fish like that here in Arizona but we call them sucker fish.
The Grayling we have here in the lakes in Northern Arizona do not get as big
as the one I caught.
We also have Kokonee Salmon and McConnahe Salmon ( I knowbad
spelling)

The only fish we did not get to catch was Northern Pike, and we have them
here in Arizona as well.

Salmon, trout, whitefish and grayling all share a common ancestor.
The are the species in the Salmonidae family.

Some grayling have an iridescent coloration. It's a very pretty fish.

I actually have caught grayling while fishing in Wales.

Grayling and whitefish also share a smell. It's a pretty distinctive
odor, not necessarily objectionable, but different and recognizable.

Grayling will sometimes suspend themselves almost vertically drifting
under a surface bug, before rising to slurp down the fly.

  the scam works:

Two seriously good-looking voluptuous 20-21 year-old girls come over
to your car as you are packing your shopping into the car.

They both start cleaning your windscreen. Their large firm young
breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts. It's impossible

When you thank them and offer them a tip, they'll say 'No' and instead
ask you for a lift to another store, in my case, Tesco at Kenton.

You agree and they both get in the back seat. On the way, they start
undressing, and both get completely naked. Then, when you pull over to
remonstrate, one of them climbs over into the front seat and starts
crawling all over your lap, kissing you, touching you intimately, and
thrusting herself against you, while the other one steals your wallet!

  I had my wallet stolen April 4th, 9th, 10th, twice on the 15th, 17th,
  20th, 24th, and 29th. Also May 1st, 4th, twice on the 6th, three times
last Saturday and very likely again this coming week-end. So Be Warned!

P.S. Lidl have wallets on sale for £1.99 each, Aldi's are £1.75 and
  look nicer.

Subject: [VFB] Wading experience...

I have just come home from a nice week of grayling fishing in the northern
Swedish river Hårkan... with a wading experience richer. The only wader dip I
had before this was in White River 2006. That one must have been in the
America's Funniest Home Videos league. Tony can testify on that. Water that's
hardly moving... barely one foot deep... with a gravel bottom flat as a
pancake... stumble on virtually nothing and landing on my chest.

This time the water was waist deep though and pushing quite hard. The bottom
was rocky and far from wading friendly (and I had been close to fall several
times during the week). It wasn't a without wading stick place (at least not
to me, who is a careful dude). I heard the sound of a fish rising to my left
and when I quickly turned my head to see where it was I felt a sligtht sign of
losing balance. So I took a little step backwards... maybe 5-6... slipped and
fell backwards... and suddenly I was under the water. After fighting a couple
of seconds I managed to turn around so I had my toes facing the stones and when
I got a grip between the stones the stream towards my chest helped me to get
up again. I turned to get up from the water and in the very next step I slipped
again and fell face down. This time it didn't come as the same shock kind of
thing as the first fall and I was able to actually THINK about how to get up,
so I got back up standing without major problem.
I looked down and was going to reach for my wading stick and saw that the left
pocket in my chest pack was empty... just as empty as the left big vest pocket.
Downstream I saw three boxes getting smaller... a big compartment/slit foam box
with dry flies, a slit foam box (swing leaf) of the same size with nymphs and
another slit foam box with soft hackle flies. I had packed my boxes with flies
before this trip, so there were more than a couple of flies disappearing
there... and instincts took over.

I started to run downstream (as fast as you can, jumping on rocks with water up
to your waist). The water got deeper though and when it reached just below my
chest I stumbled and fell again. I had just reached the boxes, but at the same
time I also reached a hole where it suddenly got much deeper. Trying to stand
up again wasn't on the menu anymore and I started to swim. Swimming with the
rod in one hand and 'catching' all three boxes was impossible. I knew that
much. So I started to hit them one by one to get them upstream and closer to
land. Then I swam a bit towards land myself until they reached me and it was
time for the next hit/swim move again. After a couple of times repeating this
I was at a depth where I could stand up again and just collecting the boxes
coming towards me... and finally focus on leaving the water.

The night before this I had landed my (by far) largest grayling after a long
fight on a #3 rod and in fast moving water,,, but I still think this was the
took the prize as the adventure of the trip. How I actually managed to
salvage all three boxes and the rod (and myself) is beyond me. I must have had
Him on my side. But you can't have anything. Back in the wind shelter we sat by
the fire and I had changed into some reserve clothing and my wading jacket that
I didn't wore when I fell. My soaking wet fleece sweater was hanging on a nail
on the wall... right above my opened backpack. The water was dripping RIGHT
down in the pocket where I kept the cellphone... and that was the end of his
adventure. :oP

So, what have I learned from this trip?

*Be careful where you put your feet in the water. (I already knew that, so it
was more of a reminder.) But keep your pockets closed. Careful or not...
eventually you will still fall. Having given the extra second to close the
pocket after putting the box back down can turn out to be worth both the time
and the effort.
*When you have fallen, gotten up and are sitting there happy over still being
alive and not having lost anything... it doesn't have to be over. Luck can turn
quicker than you can imagine. Just because you keep stuff on land to keep it
safe from the water doesn't have to mean that it's actually safe from the
water. ;o)

I will tie these flies for the swaps:
Wet fly swap 1 = Stonefly
Wet fly swap 2 = Harley's Revenge (Harley is an African Grey parrot that my
in-laws have. I use feathers and colors from him that he sheds. It is called
Harley's revenge because his mate died when it had gotten hold of a fish from
my in-laws fish tank and chocked. So every time I catch a fish with this fly it
is a slight revenge for the bird.)

[VFB] Re: SECOND Traditional Winged Wet Fly Swap

2009-06-23 Thread John C. Bennett
None taken, both of these (the way i tie them) are tied in the traditional wing
fashion.

Is that the purpose of this swap or is it to tie a classic old traditional
winged pattern that everyone knows?

Letting you all know first. Looking for tyers for this one as it will be my
last for about six months as I start treatment in June.

Anyway we have until 15 Jun to sign up and 30 Aug to complete the flys.

Let's look at some more streamers (warmwater or coldwater)
(trout, gills, steelhead - your decision).

Self-addressed stamped envelops (MANDATORY), toe tags etc (all the normal rules
or guideline) Again for our friends not in the US, send 3-6 extra flys and I
will pay the postage back BUT you still need a self-addressed envelope.

Also will need your email address so I can make a group list of all the tyers.
This will make it easier to keep everyone up to date.

I am off in the AM for a week of trolling for some trophy trout with my Chili
Troll Fly. I will return next Thursday.

Some of the lurkers and newly signed up - get your vises dusted off and get to
tying.

Deserttrout is out.

May your GOD be your fishing partner.

[VFB] Re: Post My Mess - photos

I'm game, but the only thing is that I am currently remodeling my craft room,
so all my tying happens on a small table that I have to clean up every time I

For those interested in the rope-dub dvd...

I got the initial proof/draft DVD for the video tying sequences from the
video-man. I stuck it in the TV and Cheryl sat down to watch it with me. She
was amazed. She's seen me demo-ing the rope-dub for the last 8 years, but she
said the DVD was even better than seeing me tie in person (that's hard to
believe, since I'm so good-lookin'). She was also amazed at how many tying
techniques were included, telling me that I could make 3 DVDs with that much
information. I told her I was already working on DVD #2 and it had a lot more
advanced applications.

From my standpoint it looked pretty good, but needs a lot more editing and
photo inserts. How many tying sequences are there? 24 that I counted, not
including the talking and fly demo sections, and it doesn't include the
fishing sequence up front or the credits and ad pages at the back. The
rope-dub is so quick, and I'm only tying the tail ends (not the finished
pattern), that the tying sequences don't take very long at all.

There's a lot for someone to work on, but the tying sequences coupled with
various photos should allow pausing and rewinding so that tough parts can be
reviewed. Only problem I could see was that my big 'ol ball-park frankfingers
were getting in the way all the time. We used 2 camera angles, so hopefully we
can get good views of all ties.

I cancelled my trip to Idaho this week-end because of the storm moving in-
supposed to be 2 to 4 feet of snow up in the western mountains (Jackon/Wilson
areas) so the passes may get closed (our route). I'll have to wait for a later
date to meet up with Jack Dennis to review it with him.

From my first view, I am very satisfied and I'm looking forward to getting a
couple more initial reviews from seasoned tiers.

If you have any questions, please fire away.

And Byard- you get yours for free, of course (signature edition). I'll chat
with you off-list.

Since the rope-dub is a technique, not a pattern or recipe, the applications
will be literally for thousands of patterns, both old ones up-graded with
the rope-dub and new ones designed based on the rope-dub's capabilities.
The bottom line, of course, is fishability.  With buggy-looking segmentation
and near bullet-proof durability, it's perfect for the flyfisher who wants
great fishing flies.  The speed and ease will allow that same tier to tie 5
times as many flies in the same time.  If you want to design new patterns,
it extends the realm of 'dubbung' 10-fold, allowing the use of materials for
dubbings and styles of dubbing that haven't been seen before.

I have been toying with braiding caddis flies the last couple weeks. I am

what flies do you use it on. I am always looking for new patterns and this is
something new for me.

Hi all,

OK - so it's been about 20 years since I've participated in a swap.
However, (now that I live someplace where I can fish more often AND since I
am done with
school) I think that it's time to rectify that situation.

Is anyone interested in joining a Mayfly swap?
Dries, any style (parachute, Catskill, traditional, etc.)

Depending on interest it can be:
A) - 12 tiers, one bug each
or
B) - 6 tiers, two bugs each.

Chris

I'm looking forward to examing your size 32 Royal Wulfs. Question: What
brand of size 32 hook did you use to tie your Wulfs? Tiemco? Mustad?
A 32 Mustad is much larger than a Tiemco 32. Also, does your 32's have
a hook eye or a spade? There is a big difference between sizes among
different manufacturers.

Now to get off of the subject of me and onto flyfishing. I was given a Fly
Fisherman Magazine and it talked about this new (to me anyway) catch and
release system. Essentially the fly or flies have no hook but are attached up
the leader. When a fish takes the fly the fisherman sets the hook, and is
snagged in the side of the mouth by small, barbless, specially designed catch
and release hook. According to the article the system was tested for years on
thousands of fish caught, and mortality rates were far greater since the fish
seldom is hooked in sensitive areas, and the release is very quick.

Have any of you seen or fished with this system? Or tied flies for it?
