I'm still around. Not fishing or tying as much but still get out a few

2019-09-26 Thread Paul Marriner
As best I can tell I'm the only present VFB member who remembers Fly
Fishing World (circa 2002). Jimmy D and I were charter members and he
designed a crest for the group. We corresponded privately on several
subjects including Dyn-O-Mite, a sauce created by one of his friends. Jimmy
shipped a bottle to me from Texas. He also sent me an engraved paperweight
for my 2001 participation in what at the time was the longest-running VFB
thread, "Furled & Braided Leaders." While we never had the pleasure of
meeting face to face (although I tried to get to Sowbug once and then on to
Texas), the sad news of his passing puts another mark in a column filling
all too quickly. RIP Jimmy.

2009-08-24 Thread Paul Marriner

There are times for both methods of spinning hair, bare hook or thread
covered. When spun on a bare hook, the hair can rotate (for example when
rubbing-in floatant) more easily after the fly is complete. If, for
example when tying Bombers, one wants to add a palmered hackle, this
rotation can break the hackle stem. Here it's better to lay down a tight
thread base. The hair is a little more difficult to spin (not much if
done properly), but the hackle is protected.

cheers

[VFB] Re: Booby rigs

2009-03-20 Thread Paul Marriner

Wes, there are many ways to rig boobies - I have 5 pages on the subject
in Stillwater Fly Fishing. The depth and type of bottom, from boat or
shore, anchored or drifting, the feeding level of fish; all these and
others influence how they are rigged and fished. I fish them on
everything from floating lines to hi-speed/hi-D full sinkers.

cheers
Paul

[VFB] re: vise ID

2008-11-01 Thread Paul Marriner

I must have missed Hans' post. Pragliola is an interesting character.
Teaches (taught?) casting with short rods and high line speed (a la
Wulff). Watched him repeatably cast a fly under a closed door with about
an inch clearance - something to see. His school is (was?) in central
Italy.

cheers

A couple of guys here in Sweden had pin-on-reels with the same logotype and
remembered the brand.

The winner is... HANS WEILENMANN... with 'ROBERTO PRAGLIOLA'!!!

Just a hunch can very well be enough.

[VFB] Re: Vise ID

2008-10-31 Thread Paul Marriner

Partway down the trail. This is clearly a Regal knock-off of some
description. A backward a and an upside down and backwards R is an
intriguing, if somewhat discombobulated, logo.

cheers,
Paul
