I talked to Mike & we’ve been thinking about coming down in
June, but I don’t have a date yet.  Last year when we went to Taneycomo for the
Annual Trout Kicking Festival we couldn’t bring the boat because the trailer was
in the shop & except for Saturday, we could only wade between 5 & 6:30
or 7 in the morning. Table Rock was @ full flood & they were running three
generators almost full time. Still kicked a few though.

When I first moved here, I fished almost every day as I did for the first
several years. Then I started to tie commercially and I did not have time to
get on the water every day. After four years, I had some health problems that
kept me off the water and it got worse each year. Then we had Rain and more
rain. The lakes filled to over flow and with eight units at the dam for
almost 9 months, I would not try to fish even from my boat. I planed to make
up for it this year but we are still having rain and wind keeping the dam
releasing a lot of water. Crooked Creek a free flowing creek has been blown
out most of this year. Yes, I do live within walking distance of fishing
water but at times, it just can't be fished.

Maybe things will change soon and I can give more fishing reports.

If you get down my way, be sure to look me up, I know a few good places if
  the water is down.

No fishing for me today. Wind is picking up ahead of the
next storm; 22 knots & rising. And, I have developed an aversion to
waving 8 ½ - 9’ of carbon in the air during thunder storms. Casting into
the 20 knot wind w/ gusts was enough fun the other day, although I did
manage to avoid hitting myself in the back of the head w/ a fly.  Yes,
I have done that, but not for a couple of years. I also have a story about
hooking a big turkey w/ an olive bugger on Taneycomo, but that’s a story

Thanks Jimmy,
We have some of those here. In the Summer I see some boats with big beach
umbrellas opened to shade the "fisher" people. LOL
Then there are the big ice chests to load up with trout the Corn cans and the
Cricket containers and plastic bags that end up in the river. I am glad I can
still fish off the dock but I would rather be wading. Maybe one day they will
shut the dam down and I will be able to.
Next time you are up this way, be sure to figure on an extra day so I can take
you to one of mt favorite spots.

Tony, really glad you were able
to hook up with some trout.  Must be like heaven, fishing off one's dock
for them.  Now, if that dock was in Texas and there were trout, all the
amenities
needed to enjoy fishing to the fullest would be right there:  A cooler full
of beer, sandwiches, vienna sausage, crackers, cheese, a god red / white
wine for those who desire and a big pop up shelter for when the rains come.
No kidding, we have deer stands here in my neck of the woods that are as
well outfitted as a travel trailer, carpet on the floors, heater, etc. etc.
There's an old saying down here:  "Life is too short not to live it like
a TEXAN"

Tony, really glad you were able to hook up with some trout. Must be
like heaven, fishing off one's dock for them. Now, if that dock was in
Texas and there were trout, all the amenities needed to enjoy fishing to
the fullest would be right there: A cooler full of beer, sandwiches,
vienna sausage, crackers, cheese, a god red / white wine for those who
desire and a big pop up shelter for when the rains come. No kidding, we
have deer stands here in my neck of the woods that are as well outfitted
as a travel trailer, carpet on the floors, heater, etc. etc. There's an
old saying down here: "Life is too short not to live it like a TEXAN"

[VFB] Re: Fishing this morning

2009-04-26 Thread J Balmer
No fishing for me today. Wind is picking up ahead of the next storm; 22
knots & rising. And, I have developed an aversion to waving 8 ½ - 9’ of
carbon in the air during thunder storms. Casting into the 20 knot wind w/
gusts was enough fun the other day, although I did manage to avoid hitting
myself in the back of the head w/ a fly. Yes, I have done that, but not for
a couple of years. I also have a story about hooking a big turkey w/ an
olive bugger on Taneycomo, but that’s a story for another time.

The wind and high water has really cut into the fishing, I did have a short
shot at it the other evening with the Caddis hatch. This morning about 6:30
I looked out at the dock and noticed the water was a lot lower than it has
been. The wind was really blowing from the south, this made the water real
ripply. I did notice that the water behind the dock was a bit calmer and saw
some rises in the calmer water. I decided to give it a shot from the dock in
spite of the strong wind.
Tied on "Al's Fly and went down to the dock. Casting into the strong breeze
was not pleasant at all. I did not get the first two casts where I wanted
the fly to be. On the third cast I got a hit but missed the hook up. I was
finally able to get the fly where I wanted it for a good drift. I hooked up
with a small Brown. A few more casts later another small Brown. Missed a
couple of hits then again another small Brown. I got four small browns in
Al's Fly then I just was getting taps. I did get one good hit and missed it.
I knew that was a bigger fish, the Browns were about 10".
I then tied on a Peacock and Bronze and passed it over where I got the
better hit. I got another tap then on the next cast, I hooked up. This was a
good Rainbow about 14". I was happy with that. Made a few more casts and
finally decided the wind was getting the best of me. Reeled up and back to
the house for some breakfast.
It was a nice way to spend an hour before the day really begins.
I released all the Trout to be caught again.
