Who feels like pooling resources to get good buys on pelts at Moscow
HF to divide up amongst swappers? Like the CO-OP swap, the meister buys the
pelt, photos it, and cuts it up to divide amongst the swappers, who send in
their share + SH.

Buys range from dirt-cheap to taxidermy quality, many animals listed
(dubbing quality critters), and 3 pieces would be enough dubbing to last a very
long time.

The numbers can be set by the meister and swappers. (If you want
half a pelt, find one more swapper.)

But a simple swap could go like this: (Just a suggestion of an easy
typical swap)

So you'd get a chunk of tail, some dense back, off-color thinner
belly. #1 2 swappers would want the mask for bushy flies.

There are hundreds of selections, so there could be many swaps.

Just a thought- one ore way to use the VFB for buying power.

Chuck, now you're talking 'material swaps', something we used to do a lot
of.
Get 10 tiers off line and make up swap-bags to trade out.

My idea is for bulk purchasing discount. A few may need to trade out, but
someone has to come up with the cash.

Cruise the Moscow Hide Fur site. Call for discounts of low-demand or
highly damaged pelts for flytying. Chinchillas are not that expensive and
tho small, make a ton of dubbing.

bags, depending on how much he (or whoever) had, and then we who were in

I am not interested in a lot of dubbing, certainly whole pelts. I don't
do that much dubbing, especially of one color. Small patches of several
basic colors sounds more reasonable, and likely that I would/could be
interested in. If it happened that someone were to meister a swap which
would include smaller samples (2x2 or 2x4) I would go for it..

Wow ! These guys at Moscow H F have a ton of materials, most of which are
used for tying. I am interested in some of the materials (in small amounts),

meistering a swap like this would be a long drawn out process.

Re: [VFB] Pelt-swaps- new ideas from VFBers

2010-09-21 Thread Joyce Westphal
My dubbing isn't on pelts..just in bags, such as SLF and those you can get
in any good fly shop. I love that stuff, as well as UV dub. Again, not
pelts, bags. Much of my plain dark dubbing fur to hold things together comes
from Lion brand wool/acrylic yarn which I cut up and turn to dubbing in a
coffee blender. The rest comes from washing, drying and then brushing the
beagle with a furminator (great dubbing getting tool). Joyce

Me too. If Bob, or somebody had a lot of extra, they could make up grab
bags for example (there might not even be the EXACT type pelts in ALL the
bags, depending on how much he (or whoever) had, and then we who were in the
swap but don't really dub a whole lot, Like Larry and myself here, could be
able to get a bunch of different small patches. That would be PERFECT for my
needs/wants anyway. PLEASE, somebody like Bob, or Joyce, or whoever might
have a lot of extra dubbing type pelts, consider doing a grab bag type
sell off. I (and I know others who either don't need a lot, or can't
afford a lot of whole pelts) would certainly appreciate that Chuck

I am not interested in a lot of dubbing, certainly whole pelts. I don't
do that much dubbing, especially of one color. Small patches of several
basic colors sounds more reasonable, and likely that I would/could be
interested in. If it happened that someone were to meister a swap which
would include smaller samples (2x2 or 2x4) I would go for it..

Re: [VFB] Pelt Swaps/different fur uses

2010-09-20 Thread Don Ordes

Larry,

This is what the swap is for- but the prime mover and center is a pelt that
everyone wants a portion of.

After that, it's materials poker.

If it's not about a pelt, then again, it's another materials swap.

Don: Do you see a swap for us tyers who don't use a lot of dubbing? And
substitute newer materials for dubbings listed on recipes for certain flies?
For example, I used to tie the Adams with muskrat, which was the original
material. Now I use Krystal Dub or Ice Dubbing (or whatever it's called)
which is easier to use and buy. I used to have a whole muskrat skin. I
gave half of it away, and hardly look at it now. So, I don't use large
amounts of materials, and small sample sizes would suit me very well.

Don Ordes f...@tribcsp.com 9/20/2010 1:06 PM

Wy too many to list here.
I would use Moscow for the exotics that can't be found elsewhere*, like
their chinchilla, which is superb.

http://www.hideandfur.com/inventory/Dressed.html

Fur dubbings are a learning and trail experience, along with some research.
Start with common ones- fox, mink, badger, possum, rabbit, squirrel.
Once you master those, try others, like chinchilla, seal, PB, etc.

*One is not limited to Moscow. I found another place with good deals:
http://www.flytyingfurs.com/products.htm

It's going to take someone to volunteer to meister, then swappers can be
shoppers,

and then wheeler-dealers (adding their own stocks)

I'll call your kit muskrat 1/4 and raise you a hare's mask and some
squirrel blended dubbing.

And rope-dubbing makes working with furs a whole new deal, anyway. Getting
fur-on-skin allows you to hackle flies with the guard hairs (once you master
the tip-rope and the butt-rope). Guard hairs pulsate like soft-hackles but
are
more durable. The dubbing sequence for your fur flies averages 50 seconds,
less with practice.

Each drawer has dubbing organizers set up for the kinds of dubbing they

bag-socks, some in film cannisters, etc.

I have other boxes and bags of bulk dubbings, and lots of stuff that can be
used for dubbing ropes, so the list is about endless. When I use them, part
of it goes in the drawer to remind me of that dubbing rope, with samples.

The lower drawers are for tying kits (specific flies- like shrimp, mice)
 and extra tools.

Who feels like pooling resources to get good buys on pelts at Moscow
HF to divide up amongst swappers? Like the CO-OP swap, the meister buys
the pelt, photos it, and cuts it up to divide amongst the swappers, who
 send

Buys range from dirt-cheap to taxidermy quality, many animals listed
(dubbing quality critters), and 3 pieces would be enough dubbing to last a
 very long time.

The numbers can be set by the meister and swappers. (If you want half a
 pelt, find one more swapper.)

Re: [VFB] Pelt-swaps- How it would/could work...

2010-09-18 Thread Don Ordes
I think you guys might be missing the point.

This swap is for those who:
a.. Need more of a specific animal for dubbing and want an amount at a better
price
  b.. Can't find a specific animal at on-line sources or local fly-shops
c.. Want to try out a new critter for dubbing, such as a chinchilla or New
Zealand Possum.
d.. Want to try out rope-dubbing with raw durs on the hide, unblended, to get
'guard hairs as hackle' effects. (I can demo how to do this)
e.. Want to share the cost with other VFBers so they don't have to buy a
whole pelt to try something out.
f.. Need fur strips to make zonker-style flies or sculpin-type tails and want
to cut-your-own for shape and length.
g.. Want to use natural colors or can dye their own by buying a white hide if
available
h.. Want to design new flies for specific fish and applications, using a new
material.
i.. Want to share the cost of something else on the site, like 'porkypine'
quills or peccary or whatever else os on site- doesn't have to be a fur or
dubbing even.
j.. (Heck, it doesn't even have to be at Mocsow, like the Whiting hackle
co-op swaps. It's the idea of co-op bulk buying to lessen and share the
expense of something you don't want to spring for the whole $ amount for.)
k.. Bulk from the mfg. is a good way to cut out the middle-man expenses- just
like the hook-swap.
This swap is not for:
a.. People who don't fit in any of the above descriptions.
Denny Conrad loved the chinchilla I was using and ordered his own pelt from
Moscow and is now roping new and old go-to patterns with chinchilla, like the
'Usual' that I posted. He then ordered the whole pelt because he loved the
tiny sample I sent him and knew what it was like.

So with this swap, if tyers just want to try out a chinchilla sample, 20 (or
whatever) of them could divide up a Chinchilla pelt of any quality ranging from
$10 to $50 http://www.hideandfur.com/inventory/6300.html and get a patch to
try out for dying, drys, wets, blending, zonker strips, etc. A 1 x 2 strip
could tie quite a few fishing flies, as chinchilla is incredibly dense.
Australian/NZ possum is another fur-on-the-hide to try out. It is soft and
dense, ropes very well with great guard hairs for self-hackling ropes.

So:
a.. a meister that wants to try a certain dubbing could find the pelt they
want at the site above,
b.. determine what part and how much they want and announce a swap.
c.. Swappers could enter for a price/amount (proportion) of the hide they
want to try and enter.

Re: [VFB] Pelt-swaps- new ideas from VFBers

2010-09-18 Thread Don Ordes
Now there's an idea, Bob. My wife is trying to get me to sell some mine off!

a.. Figure out what you don't need of your own stock and see if a meister
will trade out your unwanted dubbings for a portion of the new pelt.
b.. Build your dubbing diversity with only SH expense
c.. Example: Like Bob, I have plenty of Poo-bear. So I could trade some PB
for another exotic fur to try out.
d.. I have 'tons' of bulk deer, elk, moose, etc. that I could never use, both
natural and dyed.
e.. I could send a list of what I want to trade out to the meister if he is
wanting a trade-out swap approach.
f.. The meister could also request other things he'd like to get in trade for
portions of the hide he/she is offering.
g.. SO, no matter what situation you are in, you just might find there's a
way to get diversified and accomplish another task of unloading some dubbings
or furs or whatever for trade. You may have an over-abundance of a hook design
that the meister would love to have. So trade for your portion of a brand new
dubing.

2010-09-18 Thread Larry Johnson
I am not interested in a lot of dubbing, certainly whole pelts. I don't do
that much dubbing, especially of one color. Small patches of several basic
colors sounds more reasonable, and likely that I would/could be interested in.
If it happened that someone were to meister a swap which would include smaller
samples (2x2 or 2x4) I would go for it..

Re: [VFB] Pelt-swaps- How it would/could work...

2010-09-18 Thread Chuck Alexander
If anybody decides to meister an NZ/Aussie possum swap, let me know please. Or
if you wanted to get some possum and chinchilla both, because I have tried a
tiny patch of the chinchilla (I think I got it from Don O in fact), and it made
great dubbing..I just don't seem to be a good meister on something like this as
I'd be too worried that I wouldn't give each person the same amount, but would
love to be in a co-op if anybody decides to start one. Thanks, Chuck

I think you guys might be missing the point.

This swap is for those who:
a.. Need more of a specific animal for dubbing and want an amount at a
better price
b.. Can't find a specific animal at on-line sources or local fly-shops
c.. Want to try out a new critter for dubbing, such as a chinchilla or New
Zealand Possum.
d.. Want to try out rope-dubbing with raw durs on the hide, unblended, to
get 'guard hairs as hackle' effects. (I can demo how to do this)
e.. Want to share the cost with other VFBers so they don't have to buy a
whole pelt to try something out.
f.. Need fur strips to make zonker-style flies or sculpin-type tails and
want to cut-your-own for shape and length.
g.. Want to use natural colors or can dye their own by buying a white hide
if available
h.. Want to design new flies for specific fish and applications, using a
new material.
i.. Want to share the cost of something else on the site, like 'porkypine'
quills or peccary or whatever else os on site- doesn't have to be a fur or
dubbing even.
j.. (Heck, it doesn't even have to be at Mocsow, like the Whiting hackle
co-op swaps. It's the idea of co-op bulk buying to lessen and share the
expense of something you don't want to spring for the whole $ amount for.)
k.. Bulk from the mfg. is a good way to cut out the middle-man expenses-
just like the hook-swap.

  So:
a.. a meister that wants to try a certain dubbing could find the pelt they
want at the site above,
b.. determine what part and how much they want and announce a swap.
c.. Swappers could enter for a price/amount (proportion) of the hide they
want to try and enter.
d.. When the meister has enough swappers to buy the pelt proportion they
don't want to buy, he closes the swap.
e.. So if they want 1/3 of the pelt, they close at 2/3 purchased by
swappers.
f.. So a swapper could sign up for just a square inch of a pelt at a couple
of dollars, just to try out an exotic dubbing not found in stores or on-line.
g.. If you aren't interested, don't reply

That would be great if Bob (or anybody on the list) had a few different pelts
they wanted to sell, and we could sign up in a swap, then Bob (or whoever)
could meister it and probably end up with a much higher overall price for their
pelts that had they sold them each to one person. Think about it Bob and let us

Me too. If Bob, or somebody had a lot of extra, they could make up grab
bags for example (there might not even be the EXACT type pelts in ALL the
bags, depending on how much he (or whoever) had, and then we who were in the
swap but don't really dub a whole lot, Like Larry and myself here, could
be able to get a bunch of different small patches. That would be PERFECT for
my needs/wants anyway. PLEASE, somebody like Bob, or Joyce, or whoever
might have a lot of extra dubbing type pelts, consider doing a grab bag
type sell off. I (and I know others who either don't need a lot, or can't
afford a lot of whole pelts) would certainly appreciate that Chuck

Who feels like pooling resources to get good buys on pelts at Moscow
HF to divide up amongst swappers? Like the CO-OP swap, the meister buys the
pelt, photos it, and cuts it up to divide amongst the swappers, who send in
their share + SH.

Buys range from dirt-cheap to taxidermy quality, many animals listed
(dubbing quality critters), and 3 pieces would be enough dubbing to last a very
long time.

The numbers can be set by the meister and swappers. (If you want half
a pelt, find one more swapper.)

DonO: Any idea about how much a person might be invested in a joint
ventre like this? I would be interested in several pieces of dyed fur,
but not a $100 worth.

Who feels like pooling resources to get good buys on pelts at Moscow HF
to divide up amongst swappers? Like the CO-OP swap, the meister buys the
pelt, photos it, and cuts it up to divide amongst the swappers, who send
in their share + SH.

Buys range from dirt-cheap to taxidermy quality, many animals listed
(dubbing quality critters), and 3 pieces would be enough dubbing to last a
very long time.

The numbers can be set by the meister and swappers. (If you want half a
pelt, find one more swapper.)

But a simple swap could go like this: (Just a suggestion of an easy
typical swap)

So you'd get a chunk of tail, some dense back, off-color thinner belly.
#1 2 swappers would want the mask for bushy flies.

There are hundreds of selections, so there could be many swaps.

Just a thought- one ore way to use the VFB for buying power.
