2014-12-18 Thread Chuck Alexander
Gary:Thanks a lot. Yes, it is a Marine Deep Cycle battery, but they just don’t
seem to last as long as they used to for some reason (I think I read it’s
because the lead plates are thinner than they used to be, therefore the
sulfides build up them keeping them from fully charging) and they are sooo
expensive. Chuck

My experience with lead-acid batteries is this: They do well when they are on
a trickle charge all the time. They don't do well with being

completely discharged, except the ones designed as "deep cycle".. But this
website is much smarter than me and has info about charging levels. Hope it

better quality charger would be the right thing to do I think. Thanks, Chuck

HI Chuck:

I suggest that you look at the reviews by purchasers of that device - when I
looked they were not very good and I settled for a more expensive Deltran
battery maintainer which does the job well. If I have used the battery a lot
and it is depleted, I use a Minn Kota 10 amp charger first although the little
Deltran will bring it up to full power after a few days. Deltran does make a
waterproof charger for boat installation which is more $. I would not use the
Habor freight in the rain or even my Deltran.

2014-12-16 Thread Chuck Alexander
Neville: Thanks. I'll recheck but I thought I saw where the cheaper ones
were only 1/4 or 1/2 amp charge rate. But you're right, 14 volts would be a
little hot for the battery and could cause an explosion. Chuck

I just checked and noticed that the unit you are referring to Harbor Freight
is a more expensive deluxe model of the one that I was considering that was
not listed before. The cheaper ones go on sale with their coupons for about
6 bucks from time to time. I checked the reviews and it seems that the
reviews have in fact changed. When I checked, there was a concern that the
output of the device was over 14 volts and could "cook" the battery rather
tan maintain it. They are designed as a battery maintainer rather than
battery charger.
