I just got an email back from Dreamhost today saying that they in fact are not out of dedicated servers. On 1/31/06,

I dont really know how good or bad they are compared to price &
service of other providers, I ended up using them by accident and have
had up to 4 dedicated servers from them over the years. All I know
So, since Dreamhost is out of Virtual Dedicated servers, can anyone recommend a similarly priced solution? We need dedicated, for around $100/month.This is not for a videoblog, but is for videos. We're using Datapipe now, which is very very good, but we're paying far out the ass for it.

This may not be available anymore...I just tried it and it had the 7th Anniversary promotion amout as $0.00 making the total $59.90...thankfully I remembered another promo code :)

I've been experimenting with Dreamhost for hosting video and have only good things to say about them.

You are totaly right, DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to
propagate worldwide. I do not see any advantage in this schema of
having a backup-host unless you know the main site is going down for
more then 48 hours.
Having a backup-host also means uploading the same stuff twice evry

I just took my own advise and did the noodle-in-the-toilet fix for Rocketboom too, just in case. Here is a file I put on my server:http://rocketboom.com/backup.htmlIf things get ruff, all I must be able to do is (hopefully! May require a call to in if the server is clogged) is FTP into the server,

I have a loaded pistol under my pillow and a crate of ramen noodles in my toilet tank.My backup plan of server switches, however, has a snag: Any time you switch servers, you have to change the DNS, right? Is there a way to make this faster ?

BTW, without the need to instill fear or discourage anyone from
worrying about having to pay for a larger plan just because of one
day or one week, just have a back-up plan in place.
For example, I have two rolls of heavy duty plastic, 4 rolls of duct-

Thanks for proving another good reference point for this
conversation. If what you say is true - Dreamhost doesn't have any
dedicated servers at this time - then anyone who thinks one day they
might get slashdotted and a have big digg at the same time, or
perhaps, a nytimes link and a boing

I've used Dreamhost for several years and they have consistantly

customer service is okay, and I've not had any problems with them. I

While no doubt these prices are super great and only getting greater, and it's a very useful automated service, there is one technical restriction that is important to understand, which is not expressed as "excitement" with this plan: Bits per second.Sometimes painting a picture works better for
