In Apple's excellent book Quicktime for the Web it states that
there is a MSmpeg codec that, naturally, only works in windows.
Quicktime pro will identify this track as such. just one more thing
to check when playing mp4's.

What's the easiest way to find out what type of file (the metadata, I guess) I'm working with here? A Get Info seems to only tell me the file is MPEG; is there an app that more clearly defines what type of MPEG this is?

I know I've used it in the past, but I'm glad you reminded me of it. I've downloaded 3ivx recently, too, and was looking to see if I could use it to watch vids. (It has a decoder, too, but I haven't yet figured out how to watch videos, if that's possible.)

Quicktime 6 or 7, VLC, Mplayer, to name a few.
If the mp4 wont open in quicktime then its either corrupt or theres
something about the mp4 that isnt quicktime compatible (try VLC instead).
If you have quicktime 6 and the mp4 is of h264 type then it wont work.
