Re: [videoblogging] Re: Living with server downtime...

2007-05-24 Thread Jay dedman
Funny, I have been on the phone all day talking to
bluehost. Worst support so far. They want to suspend
my account because I was hacked and some con was able
to install a phishing site in one of the folders.
After much talk, the site was not suspended but they
suggested I delete the wordtube plugin even if it has
been upgraded and supposedly addressed the problem.
Bluehost said anymore problems and my site will be
  suspended.
So I have been paranoid. I checked this evening and
there was a folder that was not supposed to be there.
And because i missed this folder I assume there is got
to be another. What a pain.

yeah.ryanne and i use 11 with no isuses.
we forget all about who hosts us because i never notice any
downtime...and that's how it should be.

[videoblogging] Re: Anyone try the Elgato Turbo 264?

2007-05-24 Thread Steve Watkins
OK heres a review. Its a shame they didnt seem to compare against
Apples quicktime encoding, but rather some other encoders, but there
are some good points made anyway:

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2007/05/24/review_elgato_turbo264/

If anybody finds any video clips encoded with this thing on the web,
please let us know. Ive orderd the devie from Elgato but dont know how
long I'll have to wait for delivery.

Cheers

There seems to be quite a good discussion about it here, some of the
comments contain a lot of info:

Sounds like it will be a good use of money espeially for people with
G4 or G5 where encoding h264 can be insanely painful. Things arent
quite so bad with the intel macs, but that device should still make a
 difference so I'll get one.

Interested to note that one of the rumours in the comments is that
Apple have GPU-assisted encoding built into leopard. So that will use
some of the graphics card processing power to decode/encode, making it
similar to the Elgate turbo.264 in terms of what it achieves, and
similar to some of the Windows graphics card history I was waffling
about yesterday. Wont be much good for people with the cheaper macs
that have non-powerful graphics chips in though.

Aha perfect, this follows on very nicely from the discussion I was
  having with Drew here yesterday.

Cool, someone finally took an encoder chip and offered it in a format
that works with movies already on our Mac. This is excellent news, and
the price doesnt seem too bad.

I havent found a proper review yet, but looking at the spec it
certainly will seed up your h264 encoding, just so long as you are
only encoding to the resolutions profiles this device supports. I
hope it is more flexible than the spec suggests, as it seems to have
fairly fixed ideas about what resolutions and h264 types it supports,
to match the ipod and apple tv it seems. So it may not be suitable for
veryone, but should satisfy the majority. Quite how much faster it is
than just doing it with software, will depend on the speed of your
computer - in a few years cpus may deliver faster results than this
usb stick can, but for most machines I would think the performance
  gain will be worth it.

I'll get one as soon as I can, and report back more information.
Certainly based on the price spec Id say it use a less powerful
encoder than the one Drew mntioned yesterday, so Im expecting it wont
deliver great results (or maybe any results) with full HD res stuff,
but again thats not an issue for most people at the moment.

The other issue is whether there is any difference in the quality of
footage it delivers - only personal testing or a recent review will
  reveal this to us.

  Cheers

[videoblogging] Google Pilots AdSense to Video

2007-05-24 Thread Roxanne Darling
http://snipurl.com/1lwe9

AdSense for Video pilot: This is what we're announcing today - we're
extending AdSense to online video content. Publishers in this test
will be able to define at what point in their videos that streaming
video ads will appear.

This is a closed pilot, which means we're unable to accommodate
additional publishers for participation.

[videoblogging] Re: Where are you staying for Pixelodeon

2007-05-24 Thread Rick Rey
The only strip I know about it is in Vegas. What area was your
friend talking about?

LA is very spread out. There are nice areas within blocks of skeezy
areas (as Gena put it). There are some VERY nice areas, too. Don't
feel limited to hotels in Hollywood or the direct vicinity of AFI.
Keep in mind there's a Metro stop near the AFI campus. Public
transportation isn't ideal in LA, but it works.

Also, you can probably get a good deal on a weekend car rental -- just
don't get it at the airport. Take the Flyaway from LAX -- it's super
cheap and I've done it before. You might spend $80 on the car and save
$200 on a hotel. Plus you don't have to deal with taxis and you can
pick which part of town to stay in.
