Re: [videoblogging] New update of miro with improved permalinks
On 11/4/07, Patrick Cook [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi everyone: On 11/2/07, Mike Meiser [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Just curious, what OS are you running on? I've actually found Miro to be very responsive not only on my intel based macbook, but also on my G4 / 667mhz tibook. It's like 7 years old. It plays videos every bit as good as VLC or QT. Windows XP on AMD Duron 1 Ghz. CPU 512 MB RAM. On this machine, I can't play ANYTHING in QT formats above 320 x 240 (Doing so just simply results in freeze frame playback). I have no experience with QT on XP. I would think it should work, but maybe QT is slow on windows XP. I do have some issue btw that there's NO throttling on downloads besides bittorrent. It tends to suck up every available bit of bandwidth. That I find as a major problem and it can make websites, especially videoblogs pretty much un browseable on the side. It does not play nicely on the network. That's EXACTLY what I'm talking about. Although I'm not sure it's a BitTorrent thing (I doubt it is). No it's specifically NOT a bittorent thing. Miro has throttling on bittorrent. They have no throttling on regular downloads. That is the problem. It can use up your whole download pipe. My only advice to them would be simplify, simplify, simplify and polish polish polish on the UI. Yeah, even if they have to open up the designing of skins to the open source community. It's way more than skins. It's not an aesthetic issue so much as usability. Between the visual clutter and the downloads hogging the network I could see this being seen as heavy, but not to the point of bloatware. Obviously you and I see things a little differently in this area. I have not used Miro on windows. I suspect their could be some problems with their use of windows QT. I have heard complaints about apple's itunes and QT technology being bloated and unstable on windows, but I thought they had resolved many of these issues on recent releases. QT iTunes are both a *bit* slow in loading, but beyond that they work for me without any problems. My guess is the slowness is something inherent in QT. Can you play any higher res videos in QT or iTunes then in Miro? -Mike Cheers :D -- Pat Cook Denver, Colorado PODCASTS - AS MY WORLD TURNS - Blogger Page - http://asmyworldturnstv.blogspot.com/ BlogTV Page - http://www.blogtv.com/Shows/20453 PAT'S REAL DEAL VIDEO BLOG - http://patsrealdeal.livejournal.com/ PAT'S HEALTH MEDICAL WONDERS VIDEOCAST - http://patshealthmedicalwondersvideocast.blogspot.com/ YOUTUBE CHANNEL - http://www.youtube.com/amwowttv/ THE PAT COOK SHOW - http://www.livevideo.com/thepcshow THE PAT COOK SHOW (Video Podcast) - Blogger Page - http://thepctvshow.blogspot.com/ - BlogTV Page - http://www.blogtv.com/Shows/19924 Yahoo! This may be of interest to others http://duplication.discmakers.com/action/ProjectDesignerView Going for a retail ready DVD or CD as an example (no shipping and tax included in price): 100 units Full Color DVD DVD Style DVD Case Slip Cellophane Wrap 1-day Rush = $5.51 each Order a 1000 and you are around 3.40 each (add shipping and tax and you get close to 4.00) Still cheap for a one day turn around ... go with a 5 day turn around and you are under 3.00 each for a DVD that is sale/promo ready. Loose the shrink wrap and Cardboard slip case and the cost is under 2.30 each with tax and shipping. This isn't a videoblog. Zigging a hand held camera lens back and forth in a corporate studio with professional lighting shot with union crew does not make this a vlog. Nope, Gena you're pretty much right on the money. Subscribe to google news alerts for vlog, videoblog or video podcast and you'll see bullsh*t PR pretty much everyday where clueless marketing people try to attach the buzzwords to some video of something on the net. Mike I'm not sure what you're talking about. The permalink button is revealed on each post by clicking the details link. It's been there for many months. Prior to that it was listed in each post without having to click the details link. And before that it didn't exist. It is hosting quite a unique little film festival - one minute shorts where the prizes are internships with leading directors/writers in India. If you could send out to the listserv or post on the blog that would be great. Details are below - let me know if you need any more information. -- Forwarded message -- From: karthik srinivasan [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Sep 20, 2007 11:49 AM Subject: passionforcinema.com announces PFCOne - an online one-minute film festival! To: Announcing PFCOne, the first online film festival sponsored by passionforcinema.com Orange County, CA - September 3, 2007 - passionforcinema.com, a leading independent voice on the Internet for âfilm fanatics and filmmakers around the world, has announced PFCOne, a one-minute online film festival, to be held December 1 - 5, 2007. The call for entries for PFCOne runs from September 10 to November 15, 2007, with the selected films put up for screening on the passionforcinema.com website between December 1 - 5, 2007. PFCOne is a platform for anyone with a story to tell who has ever dreamed of making a film to create a one-minute film to be viewed online at passionforcinema.com. PFCOne invites all filmmakers or those who have ever thought of making a film, to submit a one-minute movie using mobile phones, camcorders, video, digital or movie cameras, or any other device they can easily access which can capture motion pictures. Animated films are also encouraged. There is no entry fee for the festival. PFCOne is a juried festival with prizes including film and screenwriting internships with directors and writers on the forefront of the Indian independent film movement. Confirmed jurors include: Rajkumar Gupta (Aamir, Black Friday, No Smoking) Surendra Hiwarale (0:00 PM, Mr. Ya Miss, Nishabd) Anurag Kashyap (No Smoking, Black Friday, Paanch) Nishikant Kamat (Mumbai Meri Jaan, Dombivili Fast) Pavan Kaul (Bhram, Ssshhh, Chor aur Chaand) Christina Marouda (President - The Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles) Hansal Mehta (Woodstock Villa, Jayate, Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar, Chhal) Sudhir Mishra (Khoya Khoya Chaand, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Dharavi) Onir (Bas Ek Pal, My Brother Nikhil) Ramu Ramanathan (Playwright - director, journalist and editor) and, Suparn Verma (Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena, Chhal, Karam, Qayamat) The main purpose of the festival is to connect with budding film-makers, ask them to pick up a camera and tell a story. The main criteria to judge a film would be the subject and its final impact on the audience. Film-making is an expensive art form. But if films are shot on digital cameras and edited on laptops, it would prove to be quite inexpensive. And if they win, it would give them further confidence to take their talent forward. - Anurag Kashyap Finding a platform to exhibit one's work is often impossible, more so when it is of a purely personal nature without any commercial value whatsoever. PFC has literally 'come into the homes' of many aspiring film makers, taking their work to the world. I am always excited when I go to the movies and now movies are coming to me... - Pavan Kaul I am expecting to see a lot of interesting concepts coming out in these one minute films, a platform for the aspiring film maker in everyone and the possibility of discovering some crazy kick ass stuff. I think something like this sometimes results in tapping untapped creativity. Very often people keep planning to make a small film... this kind of festival gives this desire a push... and ultimately leading to spreading the desire and want of good cinema. - Onir passionforcinema.com went online in September 2006 as a community website designed to bring together all movie fanatics, cinema lovers and those who eat, breathe and drink cinema in one place to review and discuss movies, movie related events, movie personalities, personal opinions, and to share personal knowledge on technical aspects of the medium. It has since grown to become an influential voice for the leading edge filmmakers and directors in Indian cinema, as well as an important source of news, editorial content, and movie reviews related to Indian and world cinema. ### Media Contacts: Karthik Srinivasan, Director - Publicity, Advertisements and Sponsorships / PFCOne [EMAIL PROTECTED] Phone: +1 703.801.5628 (US) For more information on PFCOne and passionforcinema.com, please visit us on the Internet at http://passionforcinema.com or contact the site founder, Pankaj Sikka, at [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- http://geekentertainment.tv
