Thanks for sharing your story.

I wrote a book that has step by step guides in it on shoting, lighting, sound ,

I'm actually thinking about doing a whole series of video blog

there doesn't really seem to be much out there on a good step-by-step

It's just a matter of finding the time!

2010-05-30 Thread Steve Garfield
Hi Simon,
Sounds like you are making a series.

blip.tv can help.

1. by default, show the youtube version of a video

Upload once to blip.tv and have blip.tv post a version to youtube for you.
Embed that on your blog.

2. create an itunes-friendly rss feed so people can find and
subscribe to the video podcast via itunes.

Upgrade to the pro version of blip.tv and blip.tv will create an iTunes
friendly version for you and make an itunes friendly feed. You can submit that
feed to feedburner if you want tracking

3. when an iphone or ipad or other device without flash views the
site, show an html5 version of the H.264 video

not sure how you can do this without embedding the blip.tv player on your site.
On my site http://stevegarfield.blogs.com the blip.tv player recognises the
iPad and plays a compatible version.

someone who knows more than me might be able to tell you how to switch players
depending on the client viewing your blog

If you go for hte pro version of blip.tv you'll automatically get .m4v and .mp3

You can then provide a feed for each type of file to your readers.

I just did a presentation at WordCamp Boston today and my slides are over here
it you want to take a look.

I made a bunch of test post on my Wordpress.com blog.

Here's one from blip.tv

[videoblogging] My book was released on Amazon.com today

2010-01-12 Thread Steve Garfield
Hi,
Just wanted to let you know that my book, Get Seen, was released on Amazon.com
today.

My first post to this group was on June 6th, 2004.

The first message in this group was June 1, 2004.

Mine was the 6th message.

It's been a wild ride from 2004 to 2010.

I remember the first Vloggercon in NYC in 2005 and the second in SF in 2006.

My book is a nice how to guide for people starting out in online video. For
some of us who have been putting video on blogs wince 2004, it's seems so easy
now.

When we started there was no YouTube, we were worried that our videos would get
popular, because that would cost us money.

Now we've got a myriad of free hosting solutions for have lots of great
features.

But there still are and will always be people starting out.

That's where my book comes in. In the book I talk about choosing a camera,
getting good sound and lighting, and how to conduct interviews. Also, how to
edit and post, and how to go live.

I've interviewed a number of Yahoo! videoblogging group members.

I made a post today called, Where To Buy Get Seen. It's a very simple post
showing where people can order the book.

It's at:
http://bit.ly/buy-getseen

In addition to that the book has a website, http://stevegarfield.com/getseen

Over there I'm posting video interviews that I made for the book and there are
discussion forums for people who read the book who might have some questions.

So that's it. Just wanted to drop by and give you guys an update.

Thanks for your support.

[videoblogging] Maintaining social cohesion

2010-01-05 Thread Steve Garfield
I love what Cory Doctrow says about Twitter and Facebook, reminds me of what
people said about videoblogging...

Here are some suggested things to say if you want to sound like an idiot when
you talk about social media:

• It's inconsequential – most of the verbiage on Twitter, Facebook and the like
is banal blather

Yes, it certainly is. The reason for that is that most of it is social
grooming – messages passed between friends and family members as a way of
maintaining social cohesion. The meaning of the messages isn't u look h4wt
dude or wat up wiv you dawg? That's merely the form. The meaning is: I am
thinking of you, I care about you, I hope you are well.

I don't call my parents in Canada and recount the latest additions to my
daughter's vocabulary because they need to know that the kid can say elephant
and potty now; I call them up to say, all is well with your son and his
family, and you are in my heart, and I love you.

Criticizing the banality of Facebook conversation is as trite and ignorant as
criticising people who talk about the weather. There's a reason we say Did you
sleep well? at breakfast and How was your weekend? when we turn up to the
office on Monday (and it's not that we care about the weekend or the rest).

[videoblogging] Re: BETA TESTERS?

2010-01-02 Thread Steve Garfield
Hi Amani.

You know I think you're doing a great job by sharing yor knowledge on your
site. ONe thing you could do is add more text to your video posts.

In this example you are explaining how to use a pro mic, but the reader needs
to view hte video to learn how.

http://www.myurbanreport.com/2009/12/video-production-123s/

If you add text to describe what's in your video, it will make the video easier
to be found via Google.

You also call it a 'profesional microphone,' I'd call it an 'electro-voice RE20
professional microphone' and link THAT back to electro-voice.

After writing the review, I'd drop the company an email to let them know it's
out there. It they are on twitter, send them a message there.

By doing hte interview, you're helping people learn more about the product and
it's valuable.

In my case, I bought all my equipment my self and blogged about how I was using
it to make video. In the beginning when we were all learning, when I posted
each video, I also explained how I made it.

Even recently I purchased a number of new cameras and microphone to test for my
book, Get Seen. It was hard contacting each of the companies and some don't
even have a presence on social media sites.

For those products that I had to have in the book, I borrowed a product, or
tried one from a friend.

When I saw that no one had done a review of the iPod touch when it added a
video recorder, I went to the Apple Store nad did a review there and took
product shots.

The most last thing I added to the book was a review of the new Windows Media
Maker that runs on Windows 7. I learned it and made a movie and posted it
while at the local Microsoft center for a presentation.

Once you have a history of being someone who can write well and review
products, companies shold want to contact you.

Best wishes for a productive 2010 reviewing new products.

So Adam Quirk suggested opening up a thread for people to post links to videos.

I'll start with one of my mom. I love doing these with her. Just turn on the

As for content, some of my favourite things that you've done were your
mobile video posts, where you just shot moments with your phone.
You don't have to try hard to make something - you are very watchable
on camera.

I use the Blip playlist player to show my more popular old videos on
my Greatest Hits page, and it works really well.

It's not even really that necessary to have your own podcast feed -
you can use Blip's iTunes feed if you're uploading everything to Blip.

[videoblogging] Book Update

2009-07-13 Thread Steve Garfield
Hi,
Just wanted to stop in and let you know I made a blog post updating
the status of my book about online video.

http://offonatangent.blogspot.com/2009/06/get-seen-marketing-book.html

A couple of things that I link to in the post might be of interest.
I've set up a Facebook group and a NING site to support readers of the
book.

I hope you'll consider joining to share your knowledge of online video
and maybe learn something too.

I'm also in the beginning stages of planning a book tour for the end
of the year.

I'd love to get ideas from you for that. I'd like to be able to visit
cities that might be having podcamps going on, and/or I'd be
interested in helping get Media Makers groups started like I have
going on in Boston.

2009-05-14 Thread Steve Garfield

and if there was going to be another one.

People want to have another one, but no one wants to run it.

I was talking to hte folks at Blog World Expo and they are interested in adding
in Vloggercon to their October event. They would handle all the registration.

Blog World Expo also now combines New Media Expo.

Are people interested in this?

Oct 15-17 Las Vegas.

Air and hotels are cheap.

Let's talk here about it here and if there's interest I can talk to them about
getting a room or two for a vloggercon conference track within thier conference.

[videoblogging] A Mashup of Conferences? June 24-27 at UMass Amherst

2008-12-17 Thread Steve Garfield
Hi,

Are people interested in having a Vloggercon in 2009?

I've got an idea.

A Mashup of Conferences? June 24-27 at UMass Amherst

Bill Densmore out at UMass has reserved the campus for June 24-27 for
a conference.

'A Mashup of Conferences'
We were talking about calling it something like 'A Mashup of
Conferences' and inviting lots of people to co-host their conferences
there that weekend.

In 2006 he ran Media Giraffe conference on journalism, MGP2006.

TOPICS and GROUPS
I'd already thought of the possibility of having a Podcamp Amherst out
there.

He's going to corral the media and education people.

What do you think about getting a bunch of Social Media people to join
in?

I'd help in getting multi media/video production people...

Kind of like a pirate ship conference.

In addition to social media, video, podcasting I was also thinking
about Etsy crafts people, moped riders, and photographers, like
that... a wide range...

Also, it'd be fun to schedule hikes and social events around it too.

LOGISTICS

COSTS
Ballpark cost estimates are:

Meeting rooms: $6K
A/V: $2K

UMASS has tons of free WiFi

LODGING
Dorms would be available too for a very reasonable rate as well as hte
Campus Center Hotel.

Campus Center Hotel

FOOD
Food would be available at campus center for people to buy.

TRAVEL
Traveling to UMass

BTW, AMTRAK runs to Amherst

DC - NY - HARTFORD - AMHERST - MONTREAL

LOOKING FOR IDEAS
I'm looking for what your ideas on this might be...

Interested in organizing, sponsoring, streaming?

kbits/sec.

Per Vimeo suggestion:

You're the third person who brought up a Samsung but others say
 they're not
great at making cameras/lenses compared to Canon. These are the
 three that
Best Buy had. Thoughts? JVC GZMS 100 US Zoom (it has a 35x optical
 zoom
lens), is around the $329 mark. Also the Panasonic 10x zoom S7K.
 Didn't seem
to be as slick as the JVC and the zoom is less...not sure about the
 quality
of the lens compared to the JVC or the Canon FS100 which seemed to
 be the
best deal at $399 in its category. The Canon had a 37x optical zoom
 or a 48x
optical zoom when set a lower quality.

[videoblogging] Re: Decline in posts to this group.

2008-06-22 Thread Steve Garfield
Hi Jay and everyone else on the list...

I often tell the story of seeing your comment on my vlog that asked me to come
over and
join this list.

2004
It was such a huge help back in 2004 when we were just trying to figure out the
best ways
to host videos...

You are right that it was al about learning how to videoblog back then.

We were all watchiing everyone's videos.

Think about that.

Everyone on the list was watching every single video on the internet. ;-)

Well, every single video blog...

It was technically challenging... so t here were fewer people doing it.

Links
Clutter up the list with posts of here's a link to my most recent video of...:
 No way. We
had RSS for that..

It's weird to think that it was frowned upon for people to point to their new
videos.

We were all watching everyone's new videos any way so cluttering up the list
with pointers
wasn't something that was done...

Now everything has changed.

We need pointers. They now pop up on twitter and friend feed.

I always wanted FireAnt to let me see the popular videos that my friends were
watching...
Now it seems like we are getting that organically from a number of sources.

Vlog
It still irritates me when I hear someone say they posted a new vlog. They
actually made a
new 'vlog post'...not created a whole new blog to hold videos... but I'm
getting over it...
and understand that the video itself has become the vlog.

YouTube
It's also funny to look back at how we dismissed YouTube because it didn't
allow access to
the original QuickTime file or support RSS 2.0 with enclosures... Oops.

Guess we missed the boat on that one.

Exploring
I'm still very excited about video on the web... New things I'm exploring are:

- Live streaming via cellphone with Qik and other platforms.
- Live broadcasting with Mogulus
- Video conversations with Seesmic
- HD video ( still wondering what camera to get )

I'm also still working on Citizen Journalism with Rocketboom and TheUptake...

Along with that I'm looking into how all these technologies can be adapted by
TV...

So I think this is still a great place to talk about new technologies and new
content...

I surely couldn't have shared the above in under 140 characters...

Meeting in Person
It's always fun to see other videobloggers at events like SXSW too...

I'll be at Podcamp Boston in July, New Media Expo August and Streaming Media
West in
September ...

We started in 2004 talking about HOW to videoblog.

 truly just making it up.
getting video onto a blog was literally a hack.
Now its easy, so no need to talk about HOW...though i agree that list

we've made places like showinbox.tv/forum to discuss specific technologies.

We spent a year or so talking about the business of videoblogging.
it was interesting seeing all the money pouring into new companies

its still amazing to think that Youtube sold for 1.6 billion dollars.

2008-05-12 Thread Steve Garfield
Hi Richard,

The Canon GL/2 is a great camera. I've used it for a number of years. The 3
chip CCD
makes all the difference and it's good in low light too.

I like the shape of the camera and how it handles with large controls.

Recently I've had a problem with the camera being recognized by FCP on a
MacBook Pro.

I'm not using the most current FCP, so an upgrade mught help.

It used to work with no problem, but over time, software incompatability has
been introduced.

The new iMovie 08 recognized hte GL2 and I can capture footage with that for
now.

I really should drag the GL2 into an Apple store and try capturing footage in
there.

How to repair a corrupted MPEG4 file?

 I have a file I shot with an Xacti CG65 that's an H.264 MPEG4 file.
When I go to launch it in Quicktime or VLC, I get this error:

An invalid public movie atom was found in the file.

Does anyone know how to repair/recover this kind of file? It used to
be with MPEG1 and MPEG2 movies, you could simply slice off the first
X bytes of the movie, but MPEG4 is a container format, so it's not
 headerless.

I've done the basic Google thing and all of the tips and answers
found so far have not worked. Packages I've tried to open the file
with and failed so far include:

 iMovie
 Final Cut Pro
 VLC
 Quicktime
 VisualHub

I posted this on the post at my blog and on Veoh.

David Howell asked some questions about the interview so I posted some
clarifications on
the Videoblogging list.

Here they are:

On January 1, 2004 I decided to figure out how to put video on a blog and did
it. I was
unaware of anyone else having ever tried to do it. I'd never seen video on a
blog. Adrian
Miles was experimenting in 2003 and you'll see a
href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Videoblog#_note-AdrianMilesFirstVlog;his
entry
on Wikipedia./a

In the interview I am just talking about January 1, 2004 and earlier. Lots of
people started
videoblogs after that date and continue posting video to blogs.

I'm referring to the fact that I personally was able to get FCP, a Mac laptop
and
GL/2 prior to 1/1/04, and have the technology in house and available to produce
video on a blog.

I also started a a
href=http://stevegarfield.blogs.com/videopodcast/2004/11/videopodcast_20.html;vid
eopodcast/a blog to experiment in including video in RSS 2.0 with media
enclosures
for distribution. So that was in addition to the regular video blog I had.

A videoblog is video on a blog and a video podcast is video delivered over RSS
2.0 with
media enclosures.

I suggested they improve their home page to better explain when the
show starts and where to watch.

Right now it's not so clear.

Re: [videoblogging] September SF Video Edit

2007-09-17 Thread Steve Garfield
Hi Enric,

This is great.

I love it.

At PodCamp Philly participants in my session produced, acted in, and
shot a video, then edited it on the big screen with everyone watching
and giving feedback as I edited.

It was fun.

I like this idea.

Re: [videoblogging] FireAnt acquired by Odeo

2007-09-14 Thread Steve Garfield
Ah memories.

It was an amazing time. being able to watch everyone else's video
back then.

Every... single... video... that everyone else made.

Working with Daniel Salber on FireAnt for the Mac was a great
experience. New features and bug fixes that I suggested were always
implemented quickly.

Being able to work that closely with a developer was lots of fun.

Sadly the Macintosh development didn't keep up with the PC
development and I ended up dropping FireAnt and moving to Miro.

During this period, my Mac crashed and I ended up starting over and
subscribing to fewer feeds.

What's happening now is that I only subscribe to about 13 RSS 2.0
feeds with media enclosures. Others I subscribe to, but go watch online.

I find many new videos via Twitter, Email, IM and Facebook.

Another thing I frequently talked to Jay about was getting the
ability to be able to see what others using Fireant were subscribed
to, and beyond that, see what videos they liked or recommended.

That feature would have been cool.

Good luck with Odeo Josh. I'm interested in seeing what happens.

updating over time and to watch them in a unified experience. There
was nothing else like it. It was clear that something powerful was
happening. It was a new kind of television, and yet it was not like TV
at all – it was open to anyone and the possibilities seemed endless.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Ryanne Jay on teevee

2007-09-13 Thread Steve Garfield
That is why we have videoblogs.

Ironic.

ABC would have been so smart to allow us to link to and comment on
and embed that segment.

Have they done it and not publicized it?

Or do they have a show about videoblogging that doesn't actually
videoblog the content they are broadcasting?

I think #2 is the correct answer.

Here's the info page for the show:

http://abcnews.go.com/icaught/story?id=3580612page=1

No videos.

My mom should be on that show.

Re: [videoblogging] video blogging / facebook / myspace / you tube

2007-09-13 Thread Steve Garfield
Hi Daryl,

Good points.

You don't have to set up your own blog.

One reason you might want to have your own blog though is to give you
flexibility for the future. You might want to host your videos
elsewhere.

Also, you might want to allow people to subscribe to your YouTube
videos which would allow them to be delivered to their desktop,
instead of making them go to YouTube to watch.

Some people like that.

I just set that up for my Mom's I Can't Open It videoblog and
explain how on this post:

http://offonatangent.blogspot.com/2007/09/me-and-my-miro.html

The thing I just realized it that you can set up a method for people
to subscribe to YouTube's Flash videos. It hadn't occurred to me
that you could do this before.

would anyone want to come to my own website, when they have these nice

Re: [videoblogging] Jonny's Par-tay Double Feature: Jay Dedman Kathryn V. Jones, this Weds

2007-09-10 Thread Steve Garfield
Hi Jonny,

I'll be there on Wednesday night. Tuning in.

I like Jay's topic. I've been thinking about it a lot lately.

I met Kathryn at Podcamp Philly. She rocks! Her production sounds
like both a throwback to the early days of TV and a look at the
future. I interviewed her for Vlog Soup and I'll get that episode up
on Wednesday and give your show a link. Cross promotion!

See ya!
