BTW Quirk - What the heck is Bacterial Video? I've never heard of that.

It's basically the same thing as a viral video but harder to classify by the
standards used in major publications and press. Also, bacterial videos are
not susceptible to DMCA takedown notices (antibiotics) like most virals are.
It's brand new terminology so I doubt anyone has actually made one yet.
Aaron Valdez coined the term in early 2010.

[videoblogging] Political Video Project

2010-01-30 Thread Pat Cook
Is the Political Video Project still going? I see politicalvideo.org only goes
as far as 2007 or so.

Problem is I need video from the past year because I plan on capitalizing on
President Obama's hopeful plans to change Washington (And call him his staff
on the carpet on a few things at the same time) by making a remix viral video
posting it to my political blog.

So I suppose the bigger question now (Given all the issues at stake) is what
(If anything) is being done to somehow continue (Or preserve) videos from the
Obama Administration?

Iny my opinion, we shouldn't stop preserving videos simply because we've
changed Presidents in the past year. That's lame.

Just curious my opinion.

Cheers :D

All political speech should be available no matter what party is in power.

http://politicalvideo.org started because you couldn't easily get
access to President Bush's speeches. All his videos were locked in
REAL or streaming Windows format. Several of us spent a week scraping
Bush's presidential site, transcoding the video archive, and reposting
online in a searchable format.

Obama's administration has greatly diminished the need for hacking to
get access. Here are high-quality photos you can download posted
daily: http://www.flickr.com/photos/whitehouse.

His speeches are posted online, including a downloadable mp4 and mp3:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/photos-and-video/video/weekly-address-reining-budget-deficits

I would like to see even more transparency beyond just access to
videos in the political process. http://sunlightfoundation.com/ is a
good advocacy group to check out.

'Whitehouse' accounts on vimeo and youtube are also good sources for raw
material.

I'd suggest not making a viral video and instead making a bacterial video as
that is the newest recursive format.

Not to mention it's ANITQUATED technology compared to what is available today

today)

I too would like to see more transparency, but not necessariy from Obama. But
rather from his Press Secretary. I mean, they don't even make the daily news
conferences available. That's unfortunate as I'd HATE to have to go digging
around on YouTube to see if someone posts them there JUST TO SNAG ONE LITTLE
SNIPPET. It ain't worth all that IMO. I should be able to just download the
whole thing, transcode it if need be, edit it, add additional material I plan
to add, save it, convert it (back) upload it. Plain simple.

But alas, that's only if all things in this strasnge sometimes screwy world

But I will check out the Sunlight Foundation. Maybe they collect stuff I can
use.

Re: [videoblogging] Political Video

Hi everyone:

Not to point out the obvious here, but I think what we need now is a
tutorial for us Windows users as I have SUPER and have been trying to
rip the videos using that (Making sure to match the settings in the
properties dialog box) using every format possible INCLUDING Quicktime
MOV. But all to no avail. :(

If only there was a Winamp plugin that would do this. If there were,
I could do it in a heartbeat. Add to the fact that for oddball
reason, the site's player defaults to WMP *WITHOUT* giving me a choice
in IE (I imagine if I were to use either Netscape or any of the
Mozilla browsers, I probably would get a choice of player, in which
case I'd select RealPlayer, having seen the source code for WMP
already).

And to make matters worse, in the source code for WMP, they only link
to the text file which has the actual URL for the video itself.
Pretty cheesy, yet for stuff that's not supposed to be copyrighted,
PRETTY STUPID as well.

In the meantime, I think what I'll do is search the IA for videos in
which His Majesty (Again, note the sarcasm) makes his Royal appearance
in and make a list of those links (Or post a link to the page here if
there are scores of them). This way, we make use of them as well. :D

Cheers :D

http://politicalvideo.pbwiki.com/Download_Scripts and copied the RTSP
URLs into SUPER. As a result, it is has downloaded about a half dozen
videos successfully and cleanly and is downloading as I type this. My
next goal is try to convert one into MPEG-1 format for the purposes of
doing a tutorial for Windows users (If at all possible). This
tutorial will be from download from the White House website to
conversion to MPEG-1.

I chose MPEG-1 as it's the more defacto cross-platform format that
just about any OS can work with for editable videos.

Of course, what I've gathered will be shared with the rest of the
group, thus the creation of the sub-forum (I didn't really see the
need to create a seperate Yahoo! Group, though if someone else would
like to do that :) ).

Finally, I plan to name the videos according to the event description
given. Tags will also be applied in the same manner.

That's the latest on what I'm doing :)

Cheers :D

Re: [videoblogging] Political Video

2007-05-23 Thread Patrick Cook
Hi everyone:

I could *probably* help out, but it'd have to be with the help of
Skype (I have a capturing program that will record Skype calls WITH
VIDEO).

I'm not sure about this (As I haven't actually worked with the two
applications hand in hand as of yet), but I think as long as I disable
the sending of my own video (Otherwise we'd probably get my video as a
watermark in one of the lower corners, which of course we don't want
:) ).

Since many of you all have faster machines and/or Macs (I only have an
AMD Duron 1 Ghz. CPU with 512 MB of RAM), it would be easier I think
if you did the receiving from the source website and sending to me and
after the video is over and I confirm the video has been recorded
properly on my end, we can then do a file transfer via Skype. This
way, we don't have to mess with uploading them to websites as hidden
files for later downloading or trying to send them via email or
services like Pando.

Is that what you had in mind Jay?

Cheers :D

thanks Pat.
for now..we're looking for people who have a dedicated machine for a week.
we first need to get all the material.

we'll then need help adding metadata to the videos..so that's where
you could help out.

I have a PC that sits here and does very little all day besides load
different browsers...but his instructions are for Mac.

I don't think I have time to get it figured out though, so if any PC

I could probably stream copy a few using SUPER if I can find the
source URL when I go to view the HTML of the page the video is on.
Once I have them, I could then upload them to the website (I'm
assuming there'll be an upload feature, right?).

we'll then need help adding metadata to the videos..so that's where

Sure. I can fill in tags and other pertinent data. No problem. :)

Cheers :D

P.S.: Let's also not forget that the President's Weekly Radio Address
is available as a podcast from the White House website as well. This
way, those of us who do political audio podcasts can quote the His
Royal Highness (Note the sarcasm? :) ).

I don't believe it really matters what sort of computer you have as

[videoblogging] Political Video

2007-05-22 Thread Jay dedman
Kent and I are working on a project called politicalvideo.org.
We are capturing the 2000 George Bush videos on whitehouse.gov...and
will post them to the site so people can use in their own work.

Its pretty amazing actually.
the White House has posted almost every single public event Bush has
been at, and they porvide transcripts!

But they are in streaming format so not easy to grab and use in your own work.
We need several volunteers to help us download the videos. We have
scripts to automate the process, but need available machines that are
online 24 hours a day.

You should be fairly geeky because youll need to install MPlayer.
we have the instructions etc.
we have 2 volunteers already...a couple more and we'll grab all the
videos quickly.

the goal here is to provide videobloggers with source material to use
in their own work.
it'll all be searchable.

Hi everyone:

One question Jay

Why go all the back to 2000? Why not just go back to the beginning of
the War on Terrorism? THAT is where Bush has REALLY messed up this
country.

Just my opinion
