That's really good looking video. Also, GeekBrief is shot using that
camera: http://www.geekbrief.tv/about/our-setup

Very crisp, vivid video.

Hi Richard,

The Canon GL/2 is a great camera. I've used it for a number of years. The 3
chip CCD
makes all the difference and it's good in low light too.

I like the shape of the camera and how it handles with large controls.

Recently I've had a problem with the camera being recognized by FCP on a
MacBook Pro.

I'm not using the most current FCP, so an upgrade mught help.

It used to work with no problem, but over time, software incompatability has
been introduced.

The new iMovie 08 recognized hte GL2 and I can capture footage with that for
now.

I really should drag the GL2 into an Apple store and try capturing footage in
there.

I don't care about HD right now.

What are the downsides to this camera that I should be aware of, and/or are
there other camcorders out there that meet my needs?

We have a GL2 at work that plugs up to an iMac with FCE and iMovie 08 on it
- we had a Lacie external firewire drive plugged in too, and the GL2 / Mac
wasn't able to capture video footage. But with some serious googling of that
problem, we discovered that we had to unplug the external drive - THEN
everything worked great. It had something to do specifically with the GL2
and Lacie drives, apparently.

FYI (it IS a great camera!)

Thanks David.

That's my setup too. LaCie drives.

I'll try to test GL2 directly to MacBook Pro today.

External LaCie drives USED to work though.

At one point, using a card to add additional Firewire ports to the laptop
worked, but then it
didn't.

I know you said you needed 20X zoom, I'm not sure why you want
that...but if you change your mind on that I HIGHLY recommend the

I'm sure it is .. but it's out of my price range .. AND .. I really want at
least a 20x optical. All my current camcorders (Sony consumer ... one Hi-8
and two mini-DV) have at least 20x optical. That long zoom has come in
*very* handy when shooting from the rear of a room/auditorium.

FYI, there have been a bunch of reports about the casette loading
mechanism going faulty with the GL-2. It could just be a bad factory
run that's cleared out or something.

I considered the GL-2, but I'm settling on a Sony PD-170 because of the
strong reports of its powerful performance in low light, and I'm going
to start shooting some roller derby bouts soon that will be in a dim
skating rink.
