I started vlogging - and my concept of what a vlog was changed from
the desk-bound style of vlog.com to the out-in-the-world style that
you see from so many of the vloggers in this group.

SeriousMagic has some pretty cool features (the teleprompter can be
great for lots of situations), and while you can import video from
places other than your desk/webcam ... studio-bound shots is where
SeriousMagic really shines, I think.

I keep telling myself that I should install it and play around with it
some more (I did really like the demo) ... but I like that vlogging is
taking me (and my viewers) out and about - away from my lil' apartment.

Also, I've come to want a more robust time-line orriented editing
environment. SeriousMagic does has some basic
clipping/trimming/importing ability ... but my preference is for a
timeline view.

I suspect it may be an install-over-install problem. Try
uninstalling previous version and re-installing then get back to

Actually these guys are how I discovered vlogging like a year ago -
maybe even more, I'm not sure. (Though I didnt start vlogging myself
back then).

They run http://www.vlog.com and I loved that site.

I purchased the software even (though I dont use it :-P). Sometime
after I found them but before I started vlogging ... I found all of
you. :-) And I'm thankful for that. :-P

Someday I will use the green screen that their software came with
however :-)

[videoblogging] Re: It's Happening

2005-08-05 Thread Steve Watkins

I find it sort of fascinating that Vlogit doesnt appear to be
available yet?

This is bound to make me speculate wildly that...

These people have the spoftware technology already, when videoblogging
appeared and got lively, they hoped this would be a great new use for
their technology, so they worked on a cut-down package called vlogit.
They doid communite here about it Initial feedback from this group was
along the lines of 'its interesting, but its really for a specific
kind of videoblog style, of which not very many current videoblogs
fit'. Some saw a use for things like autocue and greenscreen, others
were less than positive about such technologys actual use, and whether
the results have a kind of cheese or fake PR gloss or other unwanted
denaturalising effects on videoblogs that try to use such technology.

Anyway I defending bluescree/greenscreen and otehr technologies at the
time, I support their use in certain scenarios, but clearly no, most
videoblogs are not needing such things, or would only utilise them on
the odd occasion.

Anyway I dunno why they havent released the software, maybe they got a
similar impression. Im sure their existing software does what it does
well, but to me a software package that would actually help
videobloggers out would do stuff like:

Handle capture compression to suitable format(s)
Enable user to choose soundtracks, photos etc from an online resource
of such material with suitable licensing info
Enable user to quote other videoblogs
Automatically subtitle the work
Other standard editing titling options
Be capable of generating RSS with itunes yahoo extensions, for users
who dont have great feed abilities in their hosting solution.
Guide user through attaching metadata, tagging creative commons
license to their work
Connected to other services eg vlogmap (wow that google earth vlogmap
stuff is amazing by the way)
Handle uploading/distribution through some other method

Now that would be software worthy of being linked to in every 'how to
videoblog' article eh!

Related to this is the idea recently expressed in some quarters that
this group is anti-business. Now Ive ranted about certain business
practices before, so Im probably labelled as some anti-business nutter
by some. This is wrong, and I would, for example, be delighted for
capitalist entities to create the above software. I am against
anti-social businesses and business practises, with a special emphasis
on anti-social marketing, and stuff where the marketing exists more
than the product, or is very misleading. From the sorts of
people/businesses that have at times been criticised by this group, Id
say that hopefully my stance on antisocial businesses is compatible
with the groups stance.

Why am I waffling about this? Because theres been some talk lately
that this group is antibusiness and so seperate groups are needed. Im
all for extra groups, subsets of the whole, but I wanted to refute the
idea that business cant be talked about sensibly in this group. It
can, it always has been, and long may that tradition continue. People
should not be afraid to talk about such things here, and shouldnt be
afraid of a bit of helpful (or unhelpful) criticism either. People
should be cautious about overpromoting/overmarketing/overhyping
themselves, but people should always be careful of that stuff, not
just on this list, but in life. Maybe some marketing/PR people,
despite the entire point of the profession, are not actually used to
getting real feedback from real people, are not used to actually
hearing those who the marketing annoys. Well get used to it, the net
is here, and this information is actually potentially extremely useful
, if only people can get past taking offense at criticism.

Anyway sorry for the ramble all over the place, I want to make it
quite clear that this ranting about dodgy marketing is not directed at
serious magic at all, its offtopic. They are an example of a business
I have no problems with, they have products and took time to talk to
people here a bit, a while ago. I suppose if vlogit software doesnt
materialise for ages/ever, then I might start to see it as bad form
for it to continue to get big press and stuff.

Cheers

Steve of Elbows

What was the greenscreen that came with their software - was it a hardware

It's a synthetic fabic ... I haven't actually tried using it yet (hehe).

It's all folded up and I havent messed with it really so I'm going off
of memory here, but as I recall: It's a little heavier than a bed
sheet and I don't really what it's made of but if feels very syntehic.
