Re: [videoblogging] Re: Sony release PSP media manager and mention video blogs

2005-11-03 Thread David Meade
My brother just installed the PSP software and as long as you have an
uptoday version of quicktime will read/transcode/transfer my MOVs. He
really likes the software so far.

As for the rootkit thing...
Yeah. It's not a rootkit in that its not really being used to elevate
anyones privledges ... but it is in that it's a hidden application
that even the sys Admins likely cant see or uninstall that runs with
very high privledges.

And I think you hit the nail on the head with "Bad taste ... but
probably not evil" read on it ...

Still i think Sony will have to reconsider hiding software from the
system owners / administrators to avoid a PR nightmare.

OK I ran the rootkit detection tool that was used by the security dude
to find the Sony DRM cloaking thing, and its not on my system.

Reading a bit more, this stuff appears to be getting onto Windows
systems via about 20 music CD titles that use this silly protection
system. It does not affect the Sony software Im talking about, so
thankfully its not a reason for PSP owners to avoid this product.
However it does leave a bad taste in the mouth and a stain on Sony's
reputation, but its an isue that only tends to gt the attention of a
small percentage of the population.

[videoblogging] Re: Sony release PSP media manager and mention video blogs

2005-11-03 Thread Steve Watkins
Aha many thanks for the explanation, and apologies to Pete for
questioning the validity of what he said. I totally misunderstood, the
term rootkit appears to be used more widely these days than what I
understood it to mean.

OK so this is basically an issue about Sony going well ovr the top
installing DRM software onto peoples PCs. This annoys me a lot, and no
doubt it will put some people off from installing Sonys software. To
be honest I dont think it will be a real issue for many people, the
principal is the annoying thing, people are right to rant, but I wish
every story didnt have to be hyped by the media by mentioning
computers being broken etc. It is true that the entire history of
computer-copyright-protection is littered with technical support
nightmares, the technology backfiring and doing things that annoy
users. But in practise Im not sure what effect installing this
software has on my PC, and I bet someone will come up with a way to
uninstall it if they havent already.

[videoblogging] Re: Sony release PSP media manager and mention video blogs

2005-11-03 Thread Steve Watkins
I very much doubt theres any such thing as a 'sony rootkit' that kills
your PC if you uninstall. Rather the origins of such things are more
likely bugs in the uninstaller that will have happened to hose a small
proportion of users windows systems at some time in the past, probably
by accidentally removing a system file or 2. Or do you mean something
totally different?

Anyway I bought this thing, not really used it yet but I looked at the
directory...

lol there are a total of 4 feeds in the video section. I guess this
means the 4 that are listed could get a lot of traffic if many people
buy this app. The lucky 4 are:

29 Guide - MP4 Downloads
commandN MPEG4
MobuzzTV
Rocketboom

I just subscribed to Rocketboom using it, Andrew can you tell what
traffic is coming from this app, has it had much of an effect yet?

Cheers

Steve of Elbows

PS. This thing converts a very large number of video formats, though
you need quicktime 7 (not pro) installed to be able to read some
formats (eg if converting a mp4 to a PSP mp4)

PPS. This software means videobloggers probably dont have to worry
much about making PSP compatible versions at all, which is just as
well cos virtually nobody has, and those that have tried have often
run into annoying issues.
