Re: [videoblogging] Just before you start belitting me again.
And being Arrogant and cocky to people from anywhere other than the US, even though it is meant in a joke is seen as in very bad taste. ... I personally, don't see Americans as being that arrogant, I kinda understand the sense of humor. Is it somehow in good taste to be arrogant and cocky to people from the US? Are Americans just not as deserving of good manners? Besides ... did I miss the thread here where some American went all Fuck the rest of the world on us? What are we talking about here? ... serously? Western Foreign policy dictates that if you are not with us, you are against us. Will being arrogant and cocky to actual Americans somehow alter some aspect of US foreign policy? Wouldn't it be wiser to have a discussion about actual issues rather than just lob a bunch of insults and see what happens? I mean ... make a video speaking to the US Administration about WHY those things are thought (or better yet make a video for 10 Downing ... Lord knows there's plenty of issues in need of addressing there) ... at least then you're addressing a problem and not bashing an entire nation. The general American (or human being for that matter) would far more likely take that to heart than a stream of insults. two a state of play as what the world outside of the United States regards all Americans as. Maybe that's part of the problem ... How are we supposed to react to something meant to relate a stereotype? Is it supposed to help us somehow? If I were to make a video of someone wearing the union jack, bad teeth, playing croquet, sipping tea, and snubbing their nose at anyone not doing the same ... would this video be of any real use to you? You really think it would be valuable? Would is somehow help you eliminate that stereotype? ... or croquet? I mean what is it exactly your video is supposed to accomplish other than piss people off? a) We know the stereotype and its as frustrating as any other stereotype. b) We know the general opinion the world at large has of the US administration right now ... beating the we hate America horse isn't really speaking to the issues ... its certainly not going to bridge any gaps ... why bother with such a useless stream of generalizations? c) As for those arrogant Americans who don't care what the rest of the world things ... such a video is NOT going to convince them ... to start caring. so ... what is it really supposed to accomplish? ... serously? It is just the Corporations and Government, mind you as far as throwing stones when you have a glass house is concerned, the UK gov sucks too. So if we are going to be the fighting force better than the media as we now it today, maybe we need to be a little more listening to other people's point of view, instead of trashing anything that isn't American or British for that matter. I kinda wish you'd had that thought before you made that video, myself. ... If you were an American, you would understand that she's not being racist. Which is an example of her point, really. I don't know what reaction you were expecting to your video, but we Americans tend to get heated when people criticize America based on its external stereotypes without understanding such subtle nuances as, say, the level of opposition to the Bush administration here. And it could be my typical Yank cultural unsophistication, but I can't for the life of me imagine creating a bash video about a country I am about to visit in a few weeks. Re: [videoblogging] Just before you start belitting me again.
Yeah sorry bout all that, I just realized how the world views us and will get to the bottom of that by the end of the week. By friday I should have the whole overconsumption, materialism and environmental issues all solved but the others might take some time. I have travelled abroad, and even before I did that I was aware that the way that Americans live is not always the best way. But I think that the world as a whole is doing a crappy job of living. Human rights, care for the environment, and greed are not a uniquely American Trait, it is a problem everywhere. I understand that people in other parts of the world have a different view of America than many Americans do of themselves, but I would like to think that videoblogging IS doing something about that. My government is not my identity, and I do not think it is fair to judge a person by the actions of their government. I am not going to start making assumptions about my friend living in Germany based on the actions of Angela Merkel, so I would also expect other people to not judge me or my community by the actions of President bush. I could go on, but like I said, I do not think that your video best expressed the talking points that you bring up now. It seems more combative than fostering constructive discussion. On 5/15/06, Paul Knight [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I am sure that, in viewing the video I made with enormous help from my partner in crime Paul Reynoldson, that there are a few of you living in the united states that regard this video as merely being one of a yanky bashing nature, trust me this wasn't meant to be the case, in understanding art one must see the video for what it really is, one a wake up call, two a state of play as what the world outside of the United States regards all Americans as. I am still wondering if there are a few of you that still think it was a personal attack on the people of America, hell no Bro, this is how you are perceived around the world, it just took someone the whole of Saturday to come up with it. But from the responses I have got from people this side of the Atlantic and beyond to this video, it is the truth. I had gone well beyond the sexism thing and concentrated on the bridging the gap conventions that have been happening recently. People of the United States, who are trying to bridge the gap with the rest of the world, you really need to start thinking about how you are going to address this. Western Foreign policy dictates that if you are not with us, you are against us. And being Arrogant and cocky to people from anywhere other than the US, even though it is meant in a joke is seen as in very bad taste. The rest of the world sees the only super power left trying to control everything from money to fuel. Some may see your intentions as arrogant or intrusive.I am grateful to those dollars that funded my trip to Vloggercon, and I thank you with all of my heart and can't wait to be with you all, even those who don't know me. I will be there at the conference and would like you to hear my piece. I personally, don't see Americans as being that arrogant, I kinda understand the sense of humor. I am talking to those who find it amusing to practice wearing burkas with scarves and finding the definition of Poking The Possum. To grow and be truly International, one must first attempt to try and not be funny, to take all the culture that there is out of the Earth and use it to the better advantage, baring in mind that there are Governments around the world that would be watching and would probably execute anyone that said anything against the governments concerned. These are dangerous times, and you wouldn't want to upset anybody. But be not scared, embrace the whole world with open arms, but don't tell them that they are wrong because of ingrained American Rhetoric. Hope this clears thing up so that I can at least enjoy Vloggercon.Paul On 16 May 2006, at 01:25, Josh Leo wrote: Paul, I am also curious about how many of us american idiots contributed to your flight to the states... ..and i sure hope the residents of all countries judge me personally based on the actions of my prime minister and government (one that I didn't vote for) - cheers for that incredible slice of generalisation paul, sure makes me proud to be british. Can we get back to talking about videoblogging, or maybe discuss the potential of online video to show us first hand accounts of communities/places that we've never visited, so that our judgements of them become informed by a variety of voices and viewpoints? d-- http://29fragiledays.blogspot.com SPONSORED LINKS Fireant Individual Use Explains YAHOO! Re: [videoblogging] Just before you start belitting me again.
I haven't really been following the whole sexism thread (and this is my first post to the list) but I find it the height of irony that two British men would say this about America: 'Race of People who invade other's coz they can.' What was that old saying... ah yes, 'The sun never sets on the British Empire.' Since your ancestors pretty much invented imperialism I don't think you have the moral high ground on that particular issue. Of course I'm a white male who happens to be American so obviously I'm a greedy, incompetent fool who knows nothing. ;) On 5/13/06, Paul Knight [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Check this out http://www.dailymotion.com/paulreyno/video/169001 Love Paul (to all the haters) -- Scott McNulty I blog: http://blog.blankbaby.com http://www.tuaw.com SPONSORED LINKS Fireant Individual Use Explains YAHOO! Re: [videoblogging] Just before you start belitting me again.
I don't understand how a discussion about sexism (not countries, nationalities, etc) turned into a let's start country bashing session. I don't see how this fosters community, or furthers the discussion. I see insults, and unwarranted attacks. I recognize that at times, the whole discussion could have been handled better but c'mon now. This is just useless when it comes to building community, finding solutions, communicating effectively, and discussing the topics at hand.
