Re: What OS Should my Macintosh SE run?

2018-05-17 Thread superstar64
I'm not sure if I'M reading this wrong, but I don't think everyone's
getting what I said. Early System 7 is basically anything before System
7.1, which came on later 68040 machines or so. I think System 6 is the
sweet spot for the SE and some other late 68000 machines.

Yes: I've run 7.0.1 on my Mac Portable (68000, but Mac SE clock speed x 2)
for over 25 years. For the Mac Portable, 7.0.1 has always been a "sweet
spot". System 7.1 slows it down too much and 6.0.8 is nice, but I miss
some utilities and apps that don't work under System 6. There were a few
little hacks to turn off some of the more resource intensive features of
System 7 and make the user interface a bit quicker too. Disabling
"ZoomRects" rings a bell, but it's been a long time since I "tuned" that
system and I'm very happy with the way it runs now.

I am running System 7.0.1 on my SE. I don't find it laggy really, and I
like having the software compatibility that System 7 brings. I will say
that I think you need to have a decent hard drive and all 4MB of RAM to run
System 7 on an SE. It was very laggy when I only had 2MB...

I agre with superstar64. System 6.0.7 (or 6.0.8) would be a sweet spot for
a Mac SE. Pretty stable and nice snappy performance. System 7.0.1 would
work well, but is a bit "laggy" on the SE.

I would recommend System 6 or so and maybe System 7, but I wouldn't
recommend anything higher than that, seeing as later System 7 versions look
more aged on a B screen rather than a colored screen where it actually
looks decent. also System 7 is probably pushing the 68000 chip farther than
where it's limits should be.

Those suggestions are just shooting arrows in the dark.

The flyback would not cause vertical lines. The logic board has axial caps and
isn’t really prone to simasimac from bad caps. The power supply may be suspect.
I’d reseat the RAM modules and check voltages (mostly the +5V). If you can’t
adjust the +5V properly, look at recapping the power supply.

True. I'd try re soldering the fly-back transformer & power connectors.

Might as well plan on a re-cap of the logic board as well.

It’s very likely an analog board issue, rather than an issue of software or the
hard disk.

What exactly does the vertical stripe effect look like?

Probably not a hard drive issue. That’s more akin to a memory issue. Try
opening it up and reseating the RAM SIMMs before anything else.
