About a year ago I tried to find tires for my daughter's '74 standard
daily driver. It was then I found out that the major tire
manufacturers no longer make the size to fit our air-cooled Bugs. A
recommendation from the list for 165/80-R15s took me to TireRack where
I ordered a set by Kumho to be dropped-shipped to the local dealer.
These tires seem to work just fine.

Last week she had a flat, causing the tire to be ruined. Not only was
the tire not available locally, all the major net companies listed the
Kumho as back-ordered. While searching I was directed to an eBay
advertisement for those tires. This ad from Buy Wheels Today of
Cincinnati, OH showed about 30 available. Knowing I needed a set for
the other Bug in the garage as well as the replacement, I ordered five.

On the third business day after the order, UPS brought them to my door.

Where are other folks buying their tires these days?

Re: [vintagvw] Bug Tires Brazilian Beetle

2008-06-22 Thread Brien
They still produce Combi's or busses but not Fuscas or Beetles.
Technically not since Halloween 1986, reopening of the plant intending to
make another 50,000 was done around 1991 but closed doors after 1500 were
made, June 1996.

3,000,000 were made in Brazil though.

Re: [vintagvw] Bug Tires

2008-06-19 Thread asad ishaque

Just adding my two cents for interest purposes only.

In Pakistan we get VW tyres of the 'General' brand. This was a German brand
but now its products are locally manufactured. Since the last few years, the
company has been only producing the VW size (5.00/5.60 15) in limited batches
as they find sales low. The tyres are cross plies and have tubes inside. They
are not exactly safe but give quite a vintage look to the ride which I love.
Only wish they were whitewalls!

Had put a set of brand new Generals put on my daily driven 68 almost ten
years ago. They are ok for not too adventurous drives but the side walls are
starting to crack.

Recently we have had new Nexen brand tyres too. Korean I believe. Have
heard good things about them from enthusiasts but these are tubeless and the
chances of finding good original steel wheels which would retain air are thin.

Besides these we do have a load of tyres coming in as scrap from quite a few
countries. Its no problem finding the 15 inch style but I guess the thin ones
are tricky. Plus second hand tyres always have problems.some are retreaded,
some hardened from prolonged storage while some develop bubbles in the side
walls after a few months use.

Have to look for a set for my ragtop project.was inclined towards the
cross plies for the vintage touch. Hope a set is still available. Will find out.

Best regards,

Asad

That's cause nobody else has ever seen them!...LOL!

And you *must* live in Arizona?

so, should I drive to Az. to get these or can I order them delivered from
your favorite tire shop?

Cheers, dave

That's what my local Tire City told me.

I bought a set of Dunlops there for my '70 about six years ago but
they told me none of the major manufacturers were making that size
anymore but they could order Kumho or Nankang. He told me that many
now use TireRack to order the off-brands.

clearances and get my Centerline wheels to quit leaking.

About a year ago I tried to find tires for my daughter's '74 standard
daily driver. It was then I found out that the major tire
manufacturers no longer make the size to fit our air-cooled Bugs. A
recommendation from the list for 165/80-R15s took me to TireRack
 where
I ordered a set by Kumho to be dropped-shipped to the local dealer.
These tires seem to work just fine.

Last week she had a flat, causing the tire to be ruined. Not only
 was
the tire not available locally, all the major net companies listed
 the
Kumho as back-ordered. While searching I was directed to an eBay
advertisement for those tires. This ad from Buy Wheels Today of
Cincinnati, OH showed about 30 available. Knowing I needed a set for
the other Bug in the garage as well as the replacement, I ordered
 five.

Where are other folks buying their tires these days?

While this may not be for everyone, check out the stock fitment for Smart
Fortwos. They run a staggered fitment, with 145/65R15s (155/60R15s on newer
models) up front and 175/55R15s out back. Available in Continental and
Bridgestone.
