And that is actually not really a new gesture. I always bring up the control centre on my iPhone 8 and before that on my 6S Plus by putting my finger on the bottom of the screen just above the home button, I then hear a little burble and at that point I slide my finger half way up the screen

I don't think the phone cares if the slide down or up with one finger is straight or diagonal. My impression is that the phone thinks anything other than straight left or right, is up or down. The technical description is up or down; but your colleague may have just found that Apple treats
