Well folks, I got the problem solved but it wasn't white as straight forward as
just deleting the messages.
Here's what I had to do:
– Of course I open the Messages app
– Then, using the search facility, I did a search on the names of one of my
nieces that was in that original group message

I’ve done exactly that; to the point where I have no messages lingering in my
Messages folders. Still, when i try to send a message to any one of my three
nieces the entire group is addressed.

You can just delete that group conversation. To do that, open the messages
app, swipe down to that conversation and then swipe down with one finger until
you hear delete, double tap on delete and its gone.
