Yes, if you're running IOS 6 then you can move through the in box (note
that if you pause a bit, you'll even hear the first bit of the message)
and then you can do a flick down to toggle between delete or default
(which will open the message. Double tap when you hear delete, and it's
gone.

I believe it is to avoid downloading a long message unless you want it
completely downloaded. So it saves time and data if there is a lot of
it and you may not want it.

This is not a bug but when reviewing messages once sent to trash, I get a
message to say that the messages cannot be displayed ask the sender to send
them as plain text.
