Hi all.
This is the first time I've had to do this so I'm asking for some simple
directions.
I've always upgraded my phone at an apple store but have done it differently
for the first time. I need some help in transferring everything across.
I currently have an iPhone 4S and my new iPhone 5s,
It is very easy to do this. When you are setting up your new phone make sure to
choose to set up from an iCloud backup and as long as you have been using
iCloud to back up your phone all of your apps and settings will be brought on
over to the new phone.
Have fun playing with your new iPhone.
Will that put all my photos, contacts, apps etc across? I have backed up the
old phone onto iCloud, but it says I have 3.5 gig of 5 gig available. But my 16
gig iPhone is full, so is it like a compressed backup?
I'm sure that's a stupid question.

Apps themselves are not backed up. The apps will be redownloaded from
the App Store. Music synced with a PC/Mac will also not be backed up.
You'll need to resync to get this content back onto your phone.

Contacts and apps it will do, I am not sure about the photos though. It depends
if your iCloud settings are set so that your photos are backed up to iCloud.
Remember, that iCloud isn’t actually hosting all of your content it is only
taking a periodic snapshot of your device so that when you
