You dial the number e.g. and then you select 1 to top up I think.
This is doable but then you have to type in your credit card long number and
this is where I failed every time as I couldn't

It's not doable and Apple certainly shouldn't be allowing that. Can you
imagine the security and privacy implications if your phone could do that?

I am not sure why you couldn't set up the contact as you said with the
number, a comma, the access code and the pound symbol. Maybe try just the
number, a comma and the access code and leave out the pound key, you could
always dial it manually and chances are it may work anyways if you
Golly Don, it's been a long time sense I've had to use this but I seem to
remember adding in a comma. That adds a hold and then type in the remaining
digits. I think I remember using a 4 digit code. What this did was to hold
until you double tapped. Then the remaining 4 numbers were dialed.
