You probably had pico which is the default speech. It makes my ears bleed.
You can get ivona or loquendo and they are much better.

I venture to say you don't like the Victor Reader Stream either since it
uses the same voices. Some applications on the iPhone do have their own
voices, which works really well when you start multitasking especially with
all but one of the GPS apps I use

None of the tools we use such as the IPhone Victor or BookSense have good
enough voices to be able to read a book with.
