Yes you can use iCloud to transfer the messages.

Another option that I use is a program called MobileSyncBrowser which I run
on my Windows XP system. This product costs $20 for the full version but you
can get one that exports a little less for less money. You have to use
iTunes to create unencrypted backups which this program uses.
