Are use the Health app every day when I go walking. When I’m done I ask Siri to open Health and it opens up to the summary page if you scroll down from summary page to favorites and then continue to scroll down it will tell you flights climbed,steps and walking and running distance. Sent from

Yes it can track your steps. Probably best to have it in the front pocket; but I believe it uses distance traveled not just motion, so carrying it in a bag shouldn't matter. In health, select the browse tab, and then the profile button in the very top. Fill out all the information. You can opt to
