Hi. I could think of one possible reason for Apple to go back to the way it was before. Remember in iOS 5.1.1 focus would be on one item, say the phone app and then when you unlocked the screen after locking it, it would launch that app anywhere you tapped on the screen? I think they reverted

Yep, that's what it does now. In IOS 6 it has stopped retaining focus information when going back to a previous screen. It only started to be able to retain this information a few IOS versions ago, I don't remember which one, but its current behavior has reverted to before that was enhanced.
