RE: Scuba diving and accessible dive logs

2012-12-23 Thread Louise Redsull
Hi Rose and Sieghard,
The case you mentioned Sieghard sounds ereally interesting. I'm not sure we
really have anything like it in the UK though at the moment which is
frustrating. I have used a waterproof bag which can go down to 20 metres to
pass my underwater test. The bag is made of material and has 3 seals. I
tested it a few times first with paper prior to putting gmy IPhone into it.
There is no headphone jack, I didn't realise you can get waterproof
headphones.
I used the case with the body compass app. I set the direction I wanted
above water and then when under water it vibrated when I was swimming in
that direction, it also made an audible sound. Once this was set I didn't
need to press any buttons which was useful as the phone would not work under
water. As I think the screen is heat sensitive I'm guessing it would be very
difficult to have a case where teh phone could work. The couple of scuba
diving cases I have seen have some buttons on them which activate the touch
screen. But the apps which go with them aren't accessible. More sighted
divers are taking their phones underwater to use the camera as well as
applications which turn their device into a dive computer.

With regards to the debate regarding whether developers will make aps
accessible. I appreciate we are a relatively small market but there is no
harm in asking them and hoping they want to get involved.

Louise.

Hi Rose,

You can take an iPhone underwater if you use a case that is made for scuba
diving. Pelican makes a waterproof and crush proof hard case, but of course
you can't use the iPhone as you can't access the touch screen when it is
in the case. The case does have an external headphone plug-in, but that's
about it. I bought another case at the dive shop on Maui where I did my last
dives, but unfortunately only found out about it at the end so I couldn't
try it any more. This one allows you to take the phone I believe as deep as
100 feet which typically is more than enough for most dives. I know 100 feet
doesn't sound much when you walk it, but going straight down in the ocean it
is a lot and even with an Advanced Open water certificate you typically
don't go deeper than 130 feet, anything beyond that becomes technical diving
and requires you to calculate decompression stops and so on. Normal
recreational diving does not require decompression stops if you observe the
maximum bottom time. You typically do what is called a safety stop at 15
feet for 3 minutes, but strictly speaking it's not required and in an
emergency you could surface from 100 feet down in one go.

The case I bought is made from heavy vinyl and it has a seal at the top
where it closes. Inside the case is a cable which you plug into the
headphone jack and it is connected to a swiveling headphone arm on the
outside similar to that on the Pelican hard case. You can plug your headset
in that and it is isolated from the inside, i.e. no water can push through.
The case I have has a valve on the outside and it comes with a rubber ball
which connects to the valve and as you compress the rubber ball it sucks the
air out of the inside of the case and in essence you vacuum package your
iPhone. This also makes the vinyl go perfectly smooth and tight across the
touch screen so you can actually use your phone and I assume with an
underwater headset you might even be able to hear something, but best would
be one of the waterproof bone conducting headsets.

Regards,
Sieghard

iTunes works pretty well with the latest version of JAWS. in fact, there is
an FSCAST on using JAWS wiht iTunes on the FS site. Blindtunes is a
collection of JAWS scripts that makes it easier to use with iTunes, but you
have to buy it, and the need for it has decreased as the screen readers have

adapted to work better with iTunes. Also, any upgrade to either JAWS or
iTunes breaks the scripts, and you need to then wait for the author of
Blindtues to update them. I just don't feel that Blindtunes is worth the
money. Also, i believe that you have to pay additional for Blindtunes
 upgrades.

about a program called Blind Tunes, which makes iTunes much more

which version of iTunes I should use with Blind Tunes.

I have read much discussion here about iTunes, but Blind Tunes is

Hi list,
have you heard of Nokia BH-907 headset? I have read little about it at:
http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/flow/item/15060_The_Nokia_Reaction_Bluetooth_H.php
and at some local websites.
it seems to be quite good, but the question is whether it supports Phone
4, or better to say Voiceover. I would like to buy it but I must be 100%
sure that voiceover and GPS navigation voice will be heard through this
heatset.
Since I am not very good at reading technical details, I would like to
ask you for help.
If anyone would be willing to find the information for me, it would be
very highly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Audio/Video News Paper?

2012-12-23 Thread Eric
I am wondering about a news app that will play stories, but you can tap skip
forward or back through them, as you might skim a newspaper.

Actually, my ultimate news service would only show me new news once. New
stories would only show when events occurred or repeat stories only when
substantially updated. It is frustrating and a waste of time to hear the hourly
news over and over when perhaps only one story is new or much different at the
end of the day as at the start.

Any ideas will be most appreciated. I seldom write just to thank people for the
help you provide, but do know I am most grateful for all the information you
share.

It does not Play the news, but with voice over you can listen to up

that gives me more up to date news than my local news apps.

It is accessible, although navigation can be a little tricky...
mainly, you want to stay to the left of the screen.

updating iTunes library?

2012-12-23 Thread Kliphton
Okay, I have deleted some doubles in my iTunes library directory. But they
are still showing up on my appleTV, and in my iTunes list of things in the
iTunes app. How do I get rid of them in the list so I won't see them
anymore. And I don't know which ones to delete in iTunes, cause they don't
have a date attached to them. Thanks.

iTunes works pretty well with the latest version of JAWS. in fact, there is
an FSCAST on using JAWS wiht iTunes on the FS site.

I just don't feel that Blindtunes is worth the
money. Also, i believe that you have to pay additional for Blindtunes
upgrades.

needed to interface with the iPhone. I use JAWS 14 and have heard
about a program called Blind Tunes, which makes iTunes much more
accessible. I would like to try using blind tunes but it is unclear
which version of iTunes I should use with Blind Tunes.

I have read much discussion here about iTunes, but Blind Tunes is
never mentioned it seems. I would appreciate help in figuring out
what version of iTunes to install and any accessibility add ons,
whether Blind tunes or another program, that would be the easiest to
use on a Windows XP Pro machine running JAWS 14.

RE: red bos instant

2012-12-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Jan,

Had you typed your question into the Google search field instead of asking
the list where most people would have to do exactly that, the first search
result would have answered your question:

Redbox Instant -- Verizon's stab at a video-streaming service to compete
with Netflix -- was rolled out into private beta today. For the first time,
...

You could of course have clicked on the link to read more which I didn't do
since I am in Canada hence the fact that Verizon is starting a video
streaming service to compete with Netflix is of little interest to me.

Remember, if you want to know what a particular app is or does or hear about
something like this, directing your query towards Google will give you an
instant answer and often one which gives you more details than what you may
get on the list.

Merry Christmas,
Sieghard
