Re: selecting text from a webpage
There is a way to do it, but it is hard for me at least. You use your roter to select lines or words. Now double tap and hold on the beginning of where you want to select. Then start the pinch gesture. I hope that works! pod cast comparing main stream IOS GPS apps
Hey everyone, some of you may remember a couple years ago that I did a comparison of the main stream gps apps on the iphone, apps such as motion x GPS, navigon, etc. I've thought about doing an updated one, especially since blind cool tech no longer exists, it would be on the blind geek zone web site. Of course, with the sendero gps app, it may be that blind users do not use these apps as much. I'm more than willing to do an updated comparison, it would be kind of fun, but was wondering how much interest people would have in this. Obviously there's no point in doing it if there is not a lot of interest, so thought I would ask first. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. camfind, taptapsee, goggles etc
Hi all, I thought I'd get your opinions before I go chatting with the developers of these kinds of apps. I have found that one of the biggest difficulties I have is holding the phone steady enough to take clear pictures. I personally can't afford purchasing devices to hold the phone so I came up with another idea. I have found that I can take pretty good pics if the phone is resting on a table top or something. However, I still tend to jiggle the phone when tapping the button to take a pic or start the video and the like. My thought here is asking the developers to add the ability to activate pic taking or video starting and stopping via a sound. this would enable us to position the phone and then clap our hands or whistle or something to activate it. I figure that if you folks feel this would be helpful enough I'd start the discussion with the developers and see if they would be open to such a change. So, what do you all think? Thanks. Re: camfind, taptapsee, goggles etc
There is another way to do it; you could press your button, but know that it would not activate for 3 seconds or something, just time enough for you to get quiet or not move, or whatever. Just my two cents, and probably not worth that much. If you're using the phone at home, you could figure out a steady way to use it and not purchase a tripod or some other kind of holding device. Thanks. RE: Seeking Advice on Creating Ring Tones
I wish someone would right a straight forward guide for ring tones, everything I see looks like 20 steps to nowhere. I either buy them, only a couple, or, send them from some package to myself, save the files in my downloads folder, then open and they seem to go where they belong but, I don't think I would ever venture in to how to actually creat one from iTunes. Why something should be so difficult seems strange to me. I just read the Fydora Outlier post and after reading it decided that I will never, ever make a ringtone from scratch. RE: Review of Fujitsu Scansnap iX500 Sheetscanner and Scansnap app
I have used an Optacon for probably 36 years and I have to say, unless someone prints very well, it is next to impossible for me to read handwritten notes. I had one deskmate in my office in the late 1970s who could print drug names into a book so that although not like the printed text I could manage to read them but, handwriting is best done with the eyes, in my case by asking someone to assist. Typically my staff does this, but on the PC it is also very simple, I can just put a page or pages in the tray, press the scan button on the scanner and the pages are scanned. At the end a screen pops up and I can select to Save to a Folder, send the scan to email, send it to the printer (for photocopying) or I can directly to applications like Word, Excel etc. The Save to Folder function is simple, it shows a Save As dialogue with the default file name (date and time) which can be edited, then there is a Browse button where I can select the folder where I want to save the scan. Once I press Save that window closes and I can start the next scan from the scanner. You can even feed embossed cards like credit cards through the feeder and it will take paper as small as a business card and as wide as 8.5. For really small or flimsy receipts the scanner comes with a carrier sheet. It consists of 2 transparent sheets of thin plastic which are glued together only at the short top edge. You put the receipt in between and then feed the carrier sheet through with the laminated edge going in first. once again brilliant and there is no need to use a glue stick and glue a small piece of paper onto a bigger piece so you can feed it through the scanner. RE: camfind, taptapsee, goggles etc
Hi Dan and Penny, Unfortunately, using the volume up button to take a picture which works just fine in the stock camera app does not work either in Tap Tap See or Talking Goggles, at least not on my 4S running iOS 6.1.3. In Talking Goggles I switched to video mode and tried the Play/Answer button on the headset which starts video recording in the stock camera app and it also does not do anything. Prizmo used to have a verbal activation option, you would just say Take Picture and it worked well. I assume since it worked in Prizmo it is possible unless Apple has changed something in iOS 6 which prevents developers from implementing such a verbal command. I can't remember when Prizmo got rid of it and why they did so. I think if you start a dialogue with the developers of Tap Tap See and/or Talking Goggles you should definitely mention that it would be good if this default behavior which is present in the Camera app could be implemented in their apps. I think your problem would largely be solved if you could use the volume up or Play/Answer button on the headset to take the picture or start video recording although for using Talking Goggles in video mode it doesn't really matter. First of all, you can start video and then use both hands to hold your phone whichever way you like including putting it on the table to steady it. Video mode in Talking Goggles looks all the time and it will just start recognizing text whenever it sees any. Also, if you don't stop video but just exit the app, the next time you open the app it will already be recording already. But being able to use the volume up button on the phone or on the headset to take a picture in Tap Tap See and Goggles would definitely be a good idea. That is a best buy brand, so maybe you can call them. The information they provide online is seriously lacking; I think any thrift store would offer more information. RE: Seeking Advice on Creating Ring Tones
Hi Rose, I believe Fedora's instructions are for the Mac. I am not saying it's easier in Windows, but I posted my instructions quite a few times now and send them directly to a few more people and I believe they were all able to follow them and create ringtones. Yes, there are about 8 or 10 steps involved depending on how I word it and also on how technically experienced somebody is. However, if you do get it to work and do it a few times, it takes little more than a minute or 2 to create a ringtone. The most time is spend on setting the start and end point if you hav a song where you don't want to start at the beginning and simply set the end point to 38 or 40 seconds because if you want to start a few seconds in and stop at a point that makes sense you have to set your start and end point, listen to the selected part of the song, then fine tune your start and end points where you listen each time after you do so. Obviously if you do this 3, 4 or 5 times you can easily spend 3 to 5 minutes doing that. After that it takes another 30 seconds to create the ringtone, rename the file, copy it into your ringtones folder and play it so it gets added to the library. The basic steps are really only that: 1. Select the part of the song you want by setting the start end end point in the Options tab in Get Info. 2. Right click on the song and select Create AAC Version. 3. Go to the newly created ringtone, select Show in Windows Explorer, then rename it so it has an M4R instead of an M4A extension. 4. Now select copy or Move and paste it into the Tones folder which is in the iTunes Media folder. 5. Press enter on it to play it which automatically adds it to your Tones library, then sync it to your phone. If you want my more detailed description just write to me off-list and I'll send it to you. There is a big difference between a process you perceive to be difficult because it involves a lot of small yet relatively simple steps and one that really is difficult. Lastly, there are several apps out there which create the actual ringtone and which are accessible and being used by members of this list. However, you still have to email the ringtone to you or use iTunes file transfer to copy it from your phone into the Tones folder where you can play it and then sync it. Personally I don't necessarily find these apps any easier than using iTunes and really the only thing they don't require you to do is rename the file with the M4R extension. RE: Seeking Advice on Creating Ring Tones
Sherry, Are they M4R files? If so just copy them into the Automatically Add to iTunes folder, then open iTunes and they should be moved to the Tones or Ringtones folder. Both the Automatically Add to iTunes and the Tones or Ringtones folder are in your iTunes Media folder which in turn is in a folder just called iTunes and if you did the default installation, it is in your Music folder. Once you have done this, you have to connect your phone, check the Tones button under Devices then tab and make sure you check Sync All Ringtones. This process is no different than syncing apps or music, either select to sync all tones or if you choose to only sync selected tones you have to tap into the listview where all your tones are and check those you want, then sync. If your files are not in the iTunes format and do not have the M4R extension they will not work. If you can't get this to work you can contact me off-list and I'll see if I can help. iPad mini questions with Focus 40 Blue Braille Display!
Hello all, got an iPad mini with a braille display and a bluetooth keyboard that is built-in my case! Now, I have some questions for you guys. 1. When I'm viewing my mails in the mail app, I don't find the compose button anywhere. In the iPhone, it is in the bottom corner, but in the iPad, I have to open a message and then, I see the compose button there. What is the easiest way to find it? 2. When my braille display is connected with my iPad, I don't see the on-screen keyboard. How do you toggle the on-screen keyboard? 3. When my braille display is connnected to my iPad, and I turn the display off when I don't need it, and activate it again, it doesn't recognize itself and I have to go through the pair option all the time. What is the best way you guys accomplish this? That's it for now. Will ask more later. Thank you for your assistance. Re: pod cast comparing main stream IOS GPS apps
Hi, It would be interesting, however keep in mind that many of the gps apps are only available in certain parts of the world, and so aren't relevant to people in those parts of the world. I'd be interested to hear a comparison of Garmin and Navigon. /Krister 25 jul 2013 kl. 16:54 skrev Mike Arrigo n0...@charter.net: Hey everyone, some of you may remember a couple years ago that I did a comparison of the main stream gps apps on the iphone, apps such as motion x GPS, navigon, etc. Re: pod cast comparing main stream IOS GPS apps
Oh, made a typo there, it should be that some gps apps aren't available to certain parts uf the world, and thus aren't relevant to people in those parts. Re: pod cast comparing main stream IOS GPS apps
Thanks for the kind words. If I do this one, it would be with 5 apps, the new google maps, navigon, garmin, TomTom, and motion x GPS drive. I know mapquest is also free but the interface in this app is difficult to work with and very confusing I think. For figuring out where you are, I would use blind square. This pod cast would mainly be for those who did not want to pay for the sendero app. I enjoy walking, so could get a bit of exercise with this one. Re: pod cast comparing main stream IOS GPS apps
I also think this would be good to see. I've been wondering about MotionX lately, as it has some fun guided voice options. I think things like interface style and accessibility would be cool to discuss. Also, what are the strong and weak points of various apps, when it comes to usefulness to the VI community. Hi. I can answer the question number 2 press dots 1.4.6 + space and you can toggle between on screen keyboard and braille keyboard only. Re: iPad mini questions with Focus 40 Blue Braille Display!
Hi there, i have this setup and have some answers for you which I'm hoping will help. 1. The compose button is toward the top of the screen. In fact, many of the buttons that you are used to on the iPhone at the bottom are on the top with the iPad. So, look for it around the top right to the top center. 2. This is typical because when the display is connected, the iPad/iPhone knows there is a keyboard and so the onscreen keyboard is hidden. The idea is that if you already have an external keyboard, most people won't want the onscreen keyboard. That being said, you can use the eject function to display the onscreen keyboard. I'm just guessing here, but I think the command is Space with E. However I have a feeling I'm wrong. The best way to experiment is to do a Space with K for knowledge, then this turns on the help practice mode. Now, press various Space and letter or symbol keys on the display and see what they all do. Take care because Space with B is the Back up, or Escape function and that will turn off the practice mode. While in this mode you can also perform finger gestures on your iThingy screen and Voice Over will tell you what they are. 3. This is most likely because you are not doing things in the proper sequence. Here's how it should go after you have paired the two devices. First make sure the iPad is locked. Now turn on the display. Now press the Home button to open the lock screen. The display should connect. Now unlock the iPad. The display will work with it. Once you are done and you want to finish using the display, lock the iPad. Then power off the display. Now, if you want to continue to use the iPad without the display, just unlock it and go on about your business. However if you are using it and you want to start using the display, you have to lock the iPad, power on the display, and then unlock the iPad. In other words, the iPad must be locked when the display is either powered on or off. According to Freedom Scientific Focus Blue manual, doing things in a different order, or turning off the display while the iPad/iPhone is not locked could result in the loss of the pairing information. I've seen similar happen with the Braille Sense notetakers and the iPhone as well as the Alva TC640 displays, so I suspect it might be an iThingy thingy. Good luck. -- Raul A. Re: camfind, taptapsee, goggles etc
If the developers use a UIImagePickerController with its source set to camera, they should be able to use the volume up button to take a picture. In Talking Goggles I switched to video mode and tried the Play/Answer button on the headset which starts video recording in the stock camera app and it also does not do anything. Prizmo used to have a verbal activation option, you would just say “Take Picture” and it worked well. I assume since it worked in Prizmo it is possible unless Apple has changed something in iOS 6 which prevents developers from implementing such a verbal command. I can’t remember when Prizmo got rid of it and why they did so. I think if you start a dialogue with the developers of Tap Tap See and/or Talking Goggles you should definitely mention that it would be good if this default behavior which is present in the Camera app could be implemented in their apps. I think your problem would largely be solved if you could use the volume up or Play/Answer button on the headset to take the picture or start video recording although for using Talking Goggles in video mode it doesn’t really matter. First of all, you can start video and then use both hands to hold your phone whichever way you like including putting it on the table to steady it. Video mode in Talking Goggles looks all the time and it will just start recognizing text whenever it sees any. Also, if you don’t stop video but just exit the app, the next time you open the app it will already be recording already. But being able to use the volume up button on the phone or on the headset to take a picture in Tap Tap See and Goggles would definitely be a good idea. Just my two cents, and probably not worth that much. If you're using the phone at home, you could figure out a steady way to use it and not purchase a tripod or some other kind of holding device. Thanks. changing between walking and driving mode in the garmin app
Hey everyone, for those who have the garmin app, how do you change the type of root? I have looked all over and cannot find it, you can choose settings for vehicle roots and walking roots, but when choosing a destination, their seems to be no way to choose the type of root the app creates. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. RE: pod cast comparing main stream IOS GPS apps
My husband and I would very much like to see this sort of podcast. Thanks for offering. God bless!
