RE: going through the process of unlocking a phone

2018-08-06 Thread Zhi Huang
I should mention that I purchased an unlocked iPhone 7 from Apple that I have
been using with ATT. Yesterday, I went to Comcast who has good deals for
xfinity customers price wise using Verizon networks. However, after checking
my serial and Imei numbers, I did not make the switch because they insisted and
made all kinds of excuses about how my iPhone 7 cannot be transferred and how I
need to get a new phone with them. I called Verizon directly to see what they
say and same old excuses. Both Comcast and Verizon are saying this is a
specific problem with ATT iPhone 7's. That is after I insisted that the phone
is unlocked but they are saying it’s the specific configuration after I chose
to use the phone with ATT. I checked with Apple and they are saying that my
phone is unlocked and that I could try to get them to put in a Verizon sim
card, but Comcast and Verizon won't budge. I googled this and got the
following poast that pretty much shares my experiences:

Anna, we're getting ready to unlock our t-mobile phones. A person at the
t-mobile store told us if we have another iphone on a different network other
than t-mobile, that if you were to take the sim card out of that other
network's phone, and put it into the phone you want to unlock, it would pop up
some messages with the promps to unlock it. Here's some more information, with
t-mobile, if you buy a phone from them, pay cash for the phone in full, it will
still come with the phone locked so you would still have to unlock the phone,
but if you could buy this same iphone from apple it would come unlocked. We
don't know this from any actual experience but verizon phones, claim all their
phones are unlocked, and a person from oneof the corprid verizon store said
the phones being unlocked has been going on for about 4 years. One thing about
it, if you put another sim card from another carrier that phone and it works,
than you would know the phone is unlocked. We don't know about at about this,
but we suggest you could ask at, and we hope you get an honest answer. I
would say to ask more than one individual at at, I would ask both, someone in
one of your city's corprid at stores, and also you could ask the customer
service when you call on the phone. If your phone is completely paid for we
suggest you get it unlocked soon.
Before ending this message, we just called verizon and at According to the
customer service person from the at customer service number, she said the
phones were locked, but to find out for sure there's 2 things you could do
besides calling the store. With your imei number you could call either the at
customer service or call the store and they should be able to tell you. The
second way to check with your imei number is to search for an imei checker. One
of the results for an imei checker I found was to check and see if one's imei
number was on t-mobile. There's probably imei checkers for all the carriers.
Let us know what you find out, Anna, and possibly someone knows a bit more.

Hi all,

Is there a way to find out whether a phone is unlocked or not? I bought mine
from Apple last fall, specifying AT as the carrier. It's an iPhone X. I seem
to remember hearing that these phones came unlocked, but I'm not sure.
I'd rather not have to do the restore from backup if it's not necessary.

Best,

You have a log in that you use to manage your Google Groups. This log on
doesn't have to be the same email address you use to subscribe to a
particular group. One of the options in My Membership and Email Settings
for This List under My Settings is to specify the email address you use
to send and receive posts for the list. You could use a different email

Hi Listers,

I am looking for an app that will report the number of sattlelites in view at
any particular time or location.

I had one called status tool which was great, giving number of sattlelites,
their signal strengths etc.

That app was never updated so it won't run on IOS 11.

I have downloaded apps such as gps, gps status, gps tools, etc. and none of
them do this.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Maybe I am wasting my time, not sure.

Is the voice on that TV the same as the one on the Roku stick? We have one of
those, and I actually found a voice almost not understandable. I’ve been using
speech synthesizers for a long time, all the way back to dos. So it’s a great
mystery to me why these folks who make these TV boxes accessible can’t find a
way to give us a voice that’s really clear. Amazon wins hands-down in my
opinion in that regard. Just like with the Roku TV, switching ports is totally
accessible on the Amazon one, and you can also named him whatever you want,
which I didn’t bother doing. You also have voice control of the TV, including
turning it off and on, switching ports, launching movies or apps whatever. The
Amazon TV is more expensive than that Roku. So if you’re satisfied with the
voice, it sounds like it could be a good way to go. I just couldn’t get past
the voice if it’s the same as the one on stick that we have.

if I’d get double messages that way or if it will correct the issue that I’m

Only the Viphone email is given, if I wanted to reply directly to you I have no

the From field, put the Jaws cursor on their email, right click or press
Shift+F10 and select copy, this will copy only their email address to the

I’ve noticed a couple messages on this list commenting that, when someone wants
to reply directly to the sender of a specific e-mail message, they can’t find
that person’s address. Here’s a somewhat clumsy “work around."

First, reply to the message in question.

Then, locate the “Originator Line” and you should find that the e-mail address
of the person sending the message to which you wish to reply is listed. Copy
that direct e-mail address, go back to the “To” field - deleting the list
address and paste the sender’s address there instead.

NOTE: The above tip presumes a degree of proficiency with selecting, copying
and pasting text. If you are interested in using the tip but are uncomfortable
with text selection feel free to contact me directly at:

   wfgal...@gmail.com

*No, the above address is not the one I’ve registered with on this list, but
that address gets much less traffic and will be much more convenient for me to
peruse!

RE: App waonted that provides gps sattlelite info:

2018-08-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Don,

I had a look and found the following two apps:

GPS Data XXL
Price: Free, offers $0.99 in-app purchase to remove ads
However, I downloaded this app since it was free and while it displays
elevation, speed and coordinates in a nice way which Voiceover reads well I
don’t see anything about number of satellites and strength even though the
description mentions this, I have to get one o fmy sighted employees to take a
look tomorrow to see if the information is there but not accessible to
Voiceover.
I might keep this app, though, I can ask SIRI about my elevation and such, but
I think this one works without data and it’s nice to have access to this in an
uncluttered format and speed is also nice when you are in a car or train, have
to try it next time I fly to see if it works on the plane, often these apps
don’t work at very high altitudes and speeds.

Here is another one which costs a few bucks, but I didn’t buy it, it gets good
ratings, though, just not sure about accessibility:
GPS Diagnostic: Satellite
Test
Price: $2.99, offers $1.99 in-app purchase for “Coordinates-Pro” whatever
exactly that is.

Sieghard

select that specific address, copy it and then paste it into an entirely

I suppose if one has e-mail configured such that the original message is not

*No, the above address is not the one I’ve registered with on this list, but
that address gets much less traffic and will be much more convenient for me to
peruse!

Not sure, your emails to the list simply don’t show your email address, neither
gmail nor iCloud.
I am replying to your email, just look at the header below, all it says is your
name and via Viphone and then the
Viphone@GoogleGroups.com email address, most
other addresses say something lik e “on behalf of” followed by th eposter’s

RE: Reordering locations in the native weather app question.

2018-08-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Del,

I live in a town called Smithers in British Columbia, the rest of my family is
in Fort St. John, also in BC and I also have Vancouver and some other cities in
my list.
When I first open the Weather app the first in the list seems to show the
details, that is Smithers, my home town.
If I touch at the bottom of the screen just above the home button I have a
picker box where it says "Smithers", 1 of 12", to the right of that and the
very last item on the screen is an "Edit Cities" button.
If I double tap that button I then see a list of all the cities and each of
them is read by Voiceover with their name, the local time and the current
temperature and then Voiceover says"button" at the end.
I can now double tap and hold until I hear the little TriTone and then drag my
finger up or down, if for example I double tap and hold on Smithers at the very
top and drag down a bit Voiceover says "After Fort St. John" which happens to
be just underneath, if I now let go and check I have Fort St. John at the top
and Smithers underneath.
If this doesn't work for you I'd make sure first of all your screen is clean, a
dirty screen can mess with gestures and also make sure you don't double tap and
hold too hard, not much pressure is needed.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi all,

I want to put the locations I have in my weather app in alphabetical order.
The problem is when I double tap and hold, as instructed it just takes me
into the location which has focus.

Can anyone tell me how to achieve this.

Hi arlene,

Thanks for your message. It's great that simply swapping the sim card is
enough, once the phone is unlocked, and you don't actually have to restore from
a backup.

All the best,

Re: My apple TV needs an accessible tv set.

2018-08-06 Thread Mary Otten

RE: deleting an app

2018-08-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Reggie,

Not sure what you mean by "go in the cloud", all apps are in the cloud so to
speak since they are all in the app store and your Apple Id remembers all apps
which have ever been installed on your phone.
You can check this by opening the App Store app, go to the "Updates" tab and
then at the top find the "My Account" button. Find the "Purchased" button and
then the "My purchases".
After you tap on this you see all apps you ever purchased, by default the "All"
filter is selected, but you can also select "Not on this iPhone" and now you
only see apps which you purcased or downloaded at some point but which are
currently not installed on your phone.
If you delete an app from your phone it is gone from your phone completely, but
I don't think it will delete automatically from say your iPad if you have one.
Whether it will automatically download to your iPad depends on whether you
select that option in Settings > iTunes and App Store, but if it is selected it
will automatically download to your iPad at the time you download it to your
iPhone not when you delete it.

Regards,
Sieghard

When an app is deleted does it actually delete or just go into the cloud? If
the app goes into the cloud, will it download on another device?

The Facebook Menu button/tab used to be the “More” button/tab.

Subject: RE: Facebook on the Phone

Hi

Here is how to initiate a conversation on Facebook with one of your
friends.

On the bottom of the screen, there are tabs for Newsfeed, Watch i.e.
videos, Requests, Market Place, Notifications and More. Double tap on the more
button. This will bring you to your personal Home page.

Double tap on the friends button. Just swipe right going down the page
until you hear friends. Then select the friend you want to write something on
their wall. Double tap the friend’s name and it will take you to their
personal home page. Swiping left to right going down the page, you will come
to a field that will read as “write something on this page or post on their
wall. Double tap that field and the keyboard pops up and you can type the
message and then click or double tap post when you are done. If there is no
field read aloud to write something, it is usually because that friend has
their privacy settings set so that no one can write on their wall.

There is a work around for this. You can write on your wall and tag that
person in the post or simply type their name in the field. For instance, you
can double tap at the top of your newsfeed where it says check in or write
something. Then begin typing Mary Smith how about those Steelers (lol). Then
tap post. Rather double tap post.

One thing I did not mention in my previous email is opening posts that
contain more than one name. I sometimes get a post of a video and it reads as
an example, Mary Smith and John Brown shared a video. Simply one finger double
tap does not open the post. I figured out that I had to double tap and hold on
the second tap in order to open the post so I could view the video. It
sometimes takes a couple of tries to get it to open.

If you have any more questions, I am happy to answer if I am able.

Kathy

Great tip about reading text in a picture, I had always asumed this was
something we just couldn't read.

The main thing i don't know about facebook is how to initiate a
conversation with someone. Once a conversation has started I can reply or like
but can't start the conversation so instructions on how to do that would be
great.

Thanks Linda

  Hi

I use Facebook on my phone all the time so I will try my best to describe
some tips and gestures to you through writing.

First, you simply one finger double tap to open a post where you can view
the like button, comment, and share button. You can also view any comments
people made.

Second, if you do not want to view the post, you can double tap with two
fingerts to bring up a menu of like, react, comment, share, and more. The more
button provides other options such as saving the post, unfollowing a post,
hiding a post etc. If you just want to react to a post, single tap with one
finger on the react choice and another menu pops up with like, love, wow, haha,
sad, and angry. Single finger double tap on the emotion you want to select.

Pictures with text in the image are not readable with voice over.
However, I heard this tip the other day when listening to one of the Tech talk
podcasts on accessible Worl. You open the post and then put the focus on the
picture and then three finger single tap and a description of the picture and
some or most or all of the text is read. You must be running the most current
version of IOS for this to work.

RE: Replying Directly to Sender

2018-08-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Bill,

It is easy to find somebody's email simply by pressing Shift+Tab a few times
when the message is open until you get to the "From" field. I did this in your
message and after pressing Control+A and then Control+C, here is what I get if
I paste the content of the clipboard:

'Bill Gallik' via VIPhone
Yours is another example where your email is not part of that address, here is
an example from a message Donna posted:
viphone@googlegroups.com; on behalf of; Donna

As you can see this "From" field contains the "on behalf of" followed by the
person's email address. I don't know what those of you where the address
doesn't show up do differently, but even if you reply to the email the address
is simply not there, here is the header when I press Control+R to reply to your
email:

Only the Viphone email is given, if I wanted to reply directly to you I have no
way of doing so whereas with Donna's and most other posts I can just go into
the From field, put the Jaws cursor on their email, right click or press
Shift+F10 and select copy, this will copy only their email address to the
clipboard not the entire line which I pasted above and selected with Control+A.

I’ve noticed a couple messages on this list commenting that, when someone
wants to reply directly to the sender of a specific e-mail message, they can’t
find that person’s address.

*No, the above address is not the one I’ve registered with on this list, but
that address gets much less traffic and will be much more convenient for me to
peruse!

Re: My apple TV needs an accessible tv set.

2018-08-06 Thread Mary Otten
We actually have two accessible TVs, and I really like the one we just recently
purchased. It is the Toshiba 42 inch fire edition, so it has Alexa built in and
it’s beautifully accessible. We have a Samsung that we’ve had for a couple of
years now, it has the voice guidance, but the voice is not to my taste
particularly and it’s just not as good an experience as the screen reader with
the Fire TV.

I bought the small TV, which is 22 inches, which also has a DVD player in it.
It also works for cars or in a RV. So that others in the family could use it at
some point as well. It cost me $130. It works just fine with the Apple TV. If
you have cable attached as well, you need an HD splitter. I have both of them
hooked to the splitter and the splitter into the TV and I have cable and
apples. :-)

RE: My apple TV needs an accessible tv set.

2018-08-06 Thread llumpkin
I do have one and love it. It is an Insignia in25 roku tv from best buy. It
only cost around $150. They have bigger ones but this one meets my needs
perfectly. The

Spectrum roku app is very accessible as is tunein. The text-to-speech voice
isn’t real great but works for me fine. It has 3 hdmi ports and a fiber-optic
out for running sound bars or our Yamaha receiver which has fiberoptic ports.
It has a composit or component port (I can’t keep the two straight). I like the
set-up very much.

deleting an app

When an app is deleted does it actually delete or just go into the cloud? If
the app goes into the cloud, will it download on another device?

I agree from the point of a totally blind person. I had a big tablet, sold
it. I was using the screen about as much as the keyboard, but like a small
screen, which is why I like my SE.

I wanted to get a big Apple tablet for my husband, because he uses his
Kindle Fire so much, charges a couple of times a day, but he says he likes
the Kindle, is not interested in an iPad right now.

Hi Reggie,

Why do you think an iPad will offer you a better experience than your
iPhone? You can just as easily pair a keyboard with your iPhone and buy an
Airprint compatible printer, just about all HP printers are and many others,
just look for "Airprint".
What is the cost of an iPad Pro 9.7 inch with 256Gb of storage and the
keyboard you mentioned in the US? Probably at least $1,000? You can buy a
basic but completely capable Windows 10 laptop for half that and if you use
NVDA youy wouldn't even have to pay for a screenreader. Just my two cents
worth. Before you spend all that money I'd make an appointment at an Apple
store and spend an hour or so with an iPad Pro 9.7 inch and see if you even
like it, a lot of completely blind people find that large of a screen
difficult when it comes to orientation or knowing where to look for what on
the screen.

So, this is what I am thinking. I want the ability to print. I want the
smallest screen I can get. I use my devices for apps, email, and messages.
Instead of getting a newer mac and because I am used to IOS I am thinking of
an iPad pro 9.7 inch screen, 128 or 256 gigs storage and Apple's smart
keyboard and a printer that is compatible with this device.

1 Would an newer iPad be compatible with any printers?
2 if I have to go to iPad pro or even if iPad would do printing, what
printer should i buy that is accessible?
3 Are there any iPad cases with built in keyboards that would automatically
connect with either device or do they all have a number to put in?
Thank you for any thoughts. There is just so much out there, and the most
important questions are not answered so asking here.

Re: Replying Directly to Sender

2018-08-06 Thread Gordan Radić

Hello Bill, hi to others!

This issue accured some time ago with many lists and list servers. It's
got something to do with new option "Reply to list".

I mostly use Thunderbird on my Windows PC for e-mail sso I will type how
I getting around this.

Classic "reply" option (CTRL + R) replies directly to the sender and
noone else receives that message.

Reply to list option (CTRL + Shift + L) replies to the list and everyone
subscribed get the message.

I have to say this works on some lists, on some lists not and very
probably depends on the mailing list configuration. For this list it is
working this way. Also, keyboard shortcuts I mentioned above works in
Mozilla Thunderbird, really don't know are the same for other mail clients.

I’ve noticed a couple messages on this list commenting that, when someone wants to
reply directly to the sender of a specific e-mail message, they can’t find that
person’s address.

NOTE: The above tip presumes a degree of proficiency with selecting, copying

with text selection feel free to contact me directly at:

that address gets much less traffic and will be much more convenient for me to
