RE: Face ID hit or miss

2022-09-05 Thread bentleyj1952
Dennis,

Thanks for the link for submitting feedback to Apple.

I'll be explaining to Apple how important touch I D is for me. And, I don't
care where it is located on the phone. I do not even necessarily need a home
button but, touch I D is extremely important for me. Glad I don't live in a
location where I have to wear gloves to protect my hands from frost bite.

That is simply speculation at this point, it is probably more likely they would
come up with under-screen Touch Id which means that you put your finger on a
certain area of the screen and that the scanner is embedded under the screen
and it will read your finger print that way.

2022-09-05 Thread joseph hudson
You don't type it in. It's a picker. So you'll take your finger and slide it up
to adjust it or slide it down. Depending on which way you wanna go. It's really
not a slide. It's more like a flick up.

Re: Accessible phone book

2022-09-05 Thread Richard Turner
I usually just ask Siri for x phone number in x city or State, or whatever.
The sheet grabber is not something you can get rid of. It is a new label for
the button that would allow one to drag an item or some such thing. Not a
helpful change from Apple in my opinion.

RE: Face ID hit or miss

2022-09-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Apple typically won't do anything unless it works really good. On the one hand
you ask what is taking Apple so long, but let's remember who first introduced
Touch Id on smart phones and who first introduced Face Id. In both cases it was
Apple with Samsung, Google and others following. I just read an article where a
guy on 9 to 5 Google wrote that he bought the latest Google Pixel phone which
has under-display Touch Id. He handed it to a friend to check it out and his
friend put his finger on the screen and the phone unlocked. At first he thought
it was some fluke, but after locking the phone again his friend repeated it and
he was consistently able to unlock his phone. Not so great and I'd rather Apple
doesn't put something like that on an iPhone if it's potentially not safe.

That is simply speculation at this point, it is probably more likely they would
come up with under-screen Touch Id which means that you put your finger on a
certain area of the screen and that the scanner is embedded under the screen
and it will read your finger print that way.

RE: Uber question.

2022-09-05 Thread Richard Turner
As far as I understand it, and from when I used it a while back, their prices
change based on demand. So, if the time you picked shows low demand, the price
is lower. If on Wednesday, the demand has gone up, the price will go up.

The best thing to do is read their terms and conditions carefully as this kind
of thing ought to be included there.

No worries on the typo. I would have fixed it, but apparently that causes
problems for people hunting in the archives later.

BTW, here is a specific video he did at the request of one visually impaired
customer. He gave me permission to share it. It won’t make a lot of sense
without the device in hand, but this will give you an idea of his commitment to
making something useful for the blind. He would also like to know what the
target size for things to scan would be for his next version.

I will start a new thread with that question.

HI Cristóbal and all,

I heard back from the person who makes the ScannerBin. IN fact, he sent me the
stand he is currently selling, which is an improvement from the one I bought a
few years ago.

This one, the camera whole just fits my 13 pro camera, but it is tight. The
tricky part is I don’t think a blind person would be able to assemble it
without a sighted person identifying the various flaps that need to be folded
and tucked into place.

It is also in more pieces than the original one.

There is however a new optional strip of LED lights that hang over the opening
where you place your document. They are powered by a 5 volt USB port, so any
standard phone charger or USB port on a computer. The cord is about 3 feet
long. So, if you need the lights, you have to be close to power. And, the
lights can be easily removed if not needed and put back in place when needed.
It is a little hard to explain. That is one of the parts that would need
sighted assistance to attach.

I’ll be updating my site, but the current description is on his web site at
www.scannerbin.com

Once assembled, it is a handy scanning box.

HTH,

The first one on that page is the ScannerBin, which apparently now has an
additional component which is LED lights to make sure there are no shadows on
the document. I just wrote the guy who makes that one to see if it also has a
larger hole for the camera array; the model I have was made before the pro

2022-09-05 Thread Mike B.
From: Rita Howells

How to use the “Search" function to search for objects in your photo
library: Rita’s iDevice Advice for September 5, 2022

Note: If you are using VoiceOver: when the instructions say "Tap on an
item", perform a one finger double tap.

Open the Photos app.
Tap on the Search tab, which is represented by the magnifying glass icon at
the bottom right.
Tap into the Search bar.
Type a search term, such as “dog” or “cat”.
You will see that the Photos app search returns some surprisingly accurate
results.

Photos can be searched from your photo library by locations, people, scenes,
text in the photos or other elements in the photos, such as a dog or a car.

More about Searching in the Photos app:
How To Search For Specific Pictures In The Photos App, on your Apple iOS
Device: This search feature is handy when you have taken a photo a while
ago and can't find it manually.
Open the Photos app and search for a key term in the app, and all the photos
that match should appear.
That's because Apple has designed the Photos app to recognize scenes and
objects using machine learning.
You can even search for events, like a concert you went to: "Photos for iOS
can use the time and location of your photos along with online event
listings to find matching photos."
It is also possible to search by location, so you can enter a place name
such as Pensacola, to track down photos of your trip to this beach
destination.
First, open the Photos app on your iPhone.
Next, tap on the Search tab in the bottom right-hand corner: which has a
magnifying glass as its icon.
Then simply type in the name of a place, a search term, or even a person's
name (if they're assigned in your Photos app) to find matches.
Search for a key term in the app, and all the photos that match should
appear.
When you are running VoiceOver: you can add a text label to the photos in
your Photos App.
There are a few Ways you can get a photo described to you right in the Apple
photos app. For one thing, as you are swiping through your photos, you can
perform a three finger single tap on the photo to hear a description, also
often read automatically, of what is in the photo. You might hear things
like, table, chair, two people. This is just an example.
You also have the option to use the Rotor to explore and get image
descriptions when a photo is open. Turn the Rotor to “Actions” and swipe up
and down for the choices of: Explore Image
Or Show Details. Make sure that your screen curtain is off, and that the
brightness is not set to zero. next, while you can of course listen to
videos that you may have taken, you can also do this with Live Photos. If
you have the live photo setting turned on in the camera, Open a Live photo,
then double tap and hold where it says live photo. You will hear a couple
seconds of audio. This, combined with the description voiceover gives you,
can often be enough to determine much about the photo. Beyond this, you can
name the people in your various photos, so that going forward, voiceover
will tell you who is in every photo you have. You can also search for photos
based upon topics, events, people, dates, and locations. Finally, if you are
certain of what a particular photo is, you can use the two finger double tap
and hold on any photo, to open the voiceover label element feature. Then you
can provide a descriptive label for each of your photos.

I can't tell how far away I hold the phone (not too close), but they

The attention feature is turned off.

Hello,
I have been using Iphone XR and I have never been able to unlock it with Face
ID.
I've tried to set it up and remove it a few times, it does not work for me, so
I gave it up.
I wish Apple would bring Touch ID back for all Iphone models. I don't like
Passcode, but have no other choice for now.

suggestion of holding my phone at arms length from my face I have had much

That is simply speculation at this point, it is probably more likely they would
come up with under-screen Touch Id which means that you put your finger on a
certain area of the screen and that the scanner is embedded under the screen
and it will read your finger print that way.

Thanks, all, for the replies and suggestions. I set mine up in a room where
there was good light, using VoiceOver, but my sighted husband was standing
behind me and he said it got a good scan of my face. Since I tried the
suggestion of holding my phone at arms length from my face I have had much
better luck. I most definitely prefer touch ID as you can even do that without
having to pick up your phone, but I'm getting more used to the face ID. I have
too much on my phone to leave it wide open, although it has been tempting in

Sunlight is absolutely not required. Maybe it is better if there is normal
light whether daylight or from a lamp/ceiling light when you first set it up,
but Apple really has gotten this right and it is not rocket science. But there
will always be some people who have difficulties with it just as there were
people who never got Touch Id to work reliably.
I remember many years ago when Touch I d first came out that there was a lady
on the Viphone list, I believe her first name was Rose, who very seriously
believe that because she was a typist or transcriptionist all her life that she
had worn off her finger prints and that is why Touch Id did not work for her.
Anyways, I can definitely see how Touch Id would be problematic for people who
do a lot of manual labour and often have dirty fingers like maybe mechanics,
farmers, carpenters and so on. As I said before, it has been my own experience
that Touch Id was always problematic if I had a bunch of small scrapes or cuts
on my fingers from woodworking and of course good old Titebond wood glue let
alone Lepage construction adhesive on my fingers would render it useless for a
couple of days until it wore off. Titebond at least can easily be washed off
with warm water, the other stuff requires paint thinner.
Then of course there is the fact that for those of us who live in a colder
climate gloves are a fact of live for 4 or 5 months out of the year and in all
these scenarios Face Id is just much superior, easier and more reliable.

tried everything. I don’t mind face ID, but I had better success with the
fingerprint, that’s for sure.

Hello,
I have been using Iphone XR and I have never been able to unlock it with
Face ID.
I've tried to set it up and remove it a few times, it does not work for
me, so I gave it up.
I wish Apple would bring Touch ID back for all Iphone models. I don't
like Passcode, but have no other choice for now.

I wonder if where one is when they initially set up face ID would make a
diference? I know it is not supposed to make that much of a difference, but I
do wonder. When I get a modern phone and want to set up face ID, I will go
outside, not in direct sunlight, but using outside light. Some people seem to
have little problem using it, others just can't seem to make it work
consistently. Maybe it is like those ocr programs, that only can do as well as
the scan they are given. Maybe some who have a problem with it gave their phone
a not so good scan of their face to start with. I know voice over said it was
okay, but maybe a better scan would work better. This is just speculation on my
part, I don't have a modern phone with which to experiment.

Hello,

A couple of things to try:

* Try holding it at arms-length away from your face, straight out in front

of you.

* If you are wearing glasses, try with them off.

* If you did not register face ID that way, try registering it again.

* Try using a microfiber cloth to wipe off the screen. Sometimes, skin

oils can cause interference, if you hold the phone up to your ear while on

a call.

* Note that, on device reboot, you will certainly need to enter your pin

again.

If none of these things help, I would probably go back to where you bought

it, or reach out to Apple, as it may be a hardware issue.

It's much easier to just reach over and unlock it with my finger than to

Thanks, all, for the replies and suggestions. I set mine up in a room where
there was good light, using VoiceOver, but my sighted husband was standing

suggestion of holding my phone at arms length from my face I have had much

RE: Face ID hit or miss

2022-09-05 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

I went out in bright sunlight, but some people say that is absolutely not
necessary. Since the guy at Wal-Mart could not do it, I wondered at the time,
if light had something to do with it. Now, I simply do not know why we could
not get it done at Wal-Mart.

Why don't you use Face Id, for me it works better than Touch Id ever
did, but of course that is partly because I do at time use my hands for

day in my woodworking shop I could forget Touch Id for the next 2 or 3 days

would say about 96 or 98% of the time. I do have th attention feature turned
off I should add, it makes it maybe slightly less secure, but both my eyes are
prosthetic and I often do not have them in at night. I have no issue with Face
I d with the attention feature enabled, but it will not work if it doesn't see
the eyes
