DRM removal

2015-03-04 Thread Richard Turner
It has been recommended on this list that Calibre is a handy program to
remove DRM so we can read our purchased books in our favorite reader instead
of being tied to the particular reader for a particular book format.

In investigating this on the Calibre web site, I came across an online book
by one of the Calibre developers.

The ABCs of e-book format conversion: Easy Calibre tips for the Kindle,
Sony and Nook

By John Schember

This is what he has to say about DRM removal:

Begin quote:

DRM the bane of conversion

DRM, as noted, stands for Digital Rights Management.

Let's think about physical books for a moment. With a physical book, you can
lend, and sell that book. But when you do either, you have to go without the
book. With e-books, that is not the case. E-books are just files on the
computer and they can be copied any number of times and given away any
number of times. DRM is designed and was created to prevent unlimited
copying of an electronic file (although some e-book users would also note
that it is a handy way for companies to try to lock them into specific
brands).

DRM affords different books various rights as determined by the publisher
and seller. Some can be read on more than one device. Some will allow for
partial copying and printing. Simply put, DRM restricts what you can do with
an e-book.

Any e-book with DRM cannot be converted to a different format. This is
because conversion itself would require the removal of the DRM. Not all
e-book formats support DRM and different e-book formats support different
sets of privileges granted by the DRM. There is no way to move the DRM with
the content when converting; thus DRM prevents conversion.

You might be tempted to look for some way to remove DRM from e-books in
order to facilitate conversion.

A word of warning about doing this:

In the USA there is a law known as the

Digital Millennium Copyright Act

(DMCA). This law makes it illegal to circumvent a copy protection system
(DRM). It also makes it illegal to produce tools, distribute tools, and aid
in circumvention. Not everyone lives in the USA, but many countries have
similar laws. Check your local laws and realize that even though you my may
only want to read an EPUB book you've legally purchased on your Kindle, it
may not be legal to do so. If you're don't like this silliness-and I
don't-then speak up to whoever in your country makes the relevant laws.

End of quote.

In spite of this, I have tried to remove DRM from a Kindle book that I would
much rather read in Voice Dream Reader, but have not found a way to
accomplish this on Windows 8.1.1. The latest Calibre does not allow for DRM
removal.

Some have mention an eBook Convertor, but that seems to just be an addon to
Calibre.

Richard

Wired Keyboard Suddenly An accessory Not Supported By This iPod Touch?

2015-03-04 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

This started happening a few days ago. Yesterday; I did a wipe and complete
reset of my iPod. The keyboard worked for about ten minutes, and now it doesn't
even show up in the settings, general, about section as it used to.

Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks,
Teresa

Hello all. This topic comes up from time to time. I'm not really
interested in the legal loopholes of DRM removal. The last I've known
about this, it's illegal to do this in the U.S. Since this list is
mainly based from the United States, I don't feel this topic is
appropriate. So, let's stop this now. If you have any comments about
this email, please write me or Cara Quinn off list.

I have not tried the Overdrive audio books but would it be possible to
convert them to mp3 or m4a with a file converter such as Switch? There are
several good programs for playing mp3 or m4a books such as Audio Book and
Podcast player. . I listened to them all the time before the BARD app came

WMA is a Microsoft proprietary format, just like AAC is an Apple

Very interesting. Richard, I not necessarily pointing a finger at you here.
Others have chimed in on this list, but I do need to say the following.

First you point out that it is illegal, and in the next breath, you say that
you have tried to do it. Plus, you are now trying, through your email to
this list to help other people do things that are not legal. If you don't
like the law, then fight to have it changed. But I very much dislike people
assuming that just because they are blind, they have some inalienable right
to circumvent the law and read what they jolly well please, even if it is
illegal.

Cargo areas are pressurized but not heated completely. One needs to keep in
mind that often at 30,000 or 35,000 feet altitude where jets fly the
temperature is as low as -60 Fahrenheit and while cargo areas are usually
heated so it doesn’t go below freezing, it is still cold in there.

RE: Any Issues Boarding A Flight with the External Battery Pack

2015-03-04 Thread Alan Lemly
Here's an actual article from PBS News Hour discussing this issue at this
link:

http://www.pbs.org/newshour/rundown/2-airlines-ban-rechargeable-batteries-ca
rgo/

I'll post the text of the article after my signature.

Alan Lemly

Two airlines ban rechargeable batteries from cargo

WASHINGTON - Two major U.S airlines say they will no longer accept
rechargeable battery shipments as new government tests confirm that
explosions and violent fires are likely to occur when large numbers of
batteries enclosed in cargo containers overheat.

Tests conducted last month by the Federal Aviation Administration show that
rechargeable batteries, also called lithium-ion batteries, consistently emit
explosive gases when they overheat or short-circuit, The Associated Press
has learned. In the recent tests, as well as other FAA tests last year, the
buildup of gases - primarily hydrogen - led to fierce explosions.

An FAA video of one of the tests obtained by the AP shows an explosion
knocking a cargo container door off its hinges and tossing boxes of
batteries into the air. The container was engulfed in fire minutes later.

In the test, a cartridge heater was used to simulate a single battery
overheating. The heater caused nearby batteries to overheat and the
short-circuiting spread to many of the nearly 5,000 batteries in the
container. It's common for tens of thousands of batteries to be placed in a
single container.

Citing safety concerns, United Airlines on Monday informed its cargo
customers it will no longer accept bulk shipments of the batteries, which
are used to power everything from smartphones to laptops to power tools.

Delta Air Lines quietly stopped accepting bulk shipments of the rechargeable
batteries on Feb. 1. The airline said in a statement that it took the action
in response to government testing and concerns raised by its pilots and
flight attendants.

A third major U.S. carrier, American Airlines, stopped accepting some types
of lithium-ion battery shipments on Feb. 23. But the airline is continuing
to accept small packages of batteries grouped together or overpacked into
a single cargo container. Those are the kinds of shipments that the FAA has
been testing and that are a greater safety concern.

All three airlines said they will continue to accept bulk shipments of
equipment containing batteries or in which batteries are placed in the same
package as equipment. Placing batteries inside equipment like laptops or in
the same package as power tools creates additional buffering and is believed
to provide added protection, although safety experts say that theory hasn't
been fully tested.

The decisions by United and Delta airlines could put pressure on other
international carriers to refuse battery shipments or appear indifferent to
safety.

I think it will cause everybody to take a look at their policies and
procedures as far as carrying that cargo, and many will elect not to, said
John Goglia, a former National Transportation Safety Board member and
aviation safety expert.

Airline industry analyst Robert W. Mann said, It's only a matter of time
before a really serious event occurs.

Airlines are essentially just trying to avoid that occurrence, he said.

Temperatures in some of the government testing reached nearly 1,100 degrees.
An airliner might be able to withstand a fire generated by a small number of
lithium-ion batteries, but a fire involving lots of them could destroy the
plane, according to a slide presentation by Airbus engineer Paul Rohrbach.
The presentation was an industry position reflecting the views of other
aircraft manufacturers as well as Airbus, according to the company.

U.S. and international officials have been slow to adopt safety restrictions
that might affect the powerful industries that depend on the batteries.
About 4.8 billion lithium-ion cells were manufactured in 2013, and
production is forecast to reach 8 billion a year by 2025. A battery contains
two or more cells.

Lithium batteries dominate the global battery industry because they're cheap
to make, lightweight and can hold a lot more energy than other types of
batteries.

Cargo airlines are continuing to transport the batteries even though they
are believed to have either caused or contributed to fires that destroyed
two Boeing 747 freighters in recent years, killing their pilots. The pilots
of a third freighter managed to escape after landing in Philadelphia, but
that plane was also destroyed.

UPS recently completed a round of tests on a shipping container that was
adjusted to allow gases to escape while continuing to contain a battery
fire. The company was encouraged by the results of the tests, said UPS
spokesman Mike Mangeot.

U.S. regulators' hands are tied by a 2012 law that Congress enacted in
response to industry lobbying. It prohibits the government from issuing
regulations regarding battery shipments that are any more stringent than
standards approved by the International Civil Aviation

The ABCs of e-book format conversion: Easy Calibre tips for the Kindle,

 By John Schember

This is what he has to say about DRM removal:

 Begin quote:

 DRM the bane of conversion

DRM, as noted, stands for Digital Rights Management.

Let's think about physical books for a moment. With a physical book, you
 can
lend, and sell that book. But when you do either, you have to go without
 the
book. With e-books, that is not the case. E-books are just files on the
computer and they can be copied any number of times and given away any
number of times. DRM is designed and was created to prevent unlimited
copying of an electronic file (although some e-book users would also
 note
that it is a handy way for companies to try to lock them into specific
 brands).

DRM affords different books various rights as determined by the
 publisher
and seller. Some can be read on more than one device. Some will allow
 for
partial copying and printing. Simply put, DRM restricts what you can do
 with
 an e-book.

Any e-book with DRM cannot be converted to a different format. This is
because conversion itself would require the removal of the DRM. Not all
e-book formats support DRM and different e-book formats support
 different
sets of privileges granted by the DRM. There is no way to move the DRM
 with
the content when converting; thus DRM prevents conversion.

You might be tempted to look for some way to remove DRM from e-books in
 order to facilitate conversion.

A word of warning about doing this:

In the USA there is a law known as the

 Digital Millennium Copyright Act

(DMCA). This law makes it illegal to circumvent a copy protection
 system
(DRM). It also makes it illegal to produce tools, distribute tools, and
 aid
in circumvention. Not everyone lives in the USA, but many countries have
similar laws. Check your local laws and realize that even though you my
 may
only want to read an EPUB book you've legally purchased on your Kindle,
 it
may not be legal to do so. If you're don't like this silliness-and I
don't-then speak up to whoever in your country makes the relevant laws.

 End of quote.

In spite of this, I have tried to remove DRM from a Kindle book that I
 would
much rather read in Voice Dream Reader, but have not found a way to
accomplish this on Windows 8.1.1. The latest Calibre does not allow for
 DRM
 removal.

Some have mention an eBook Convertor, but that seems to just be an addon
 to
 Calibre.

RE: Bluetooth Keyboards till an issue with VO?

2015-03-04 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi all,

As Jonathan said, quicknav being turned off works quite well although I still
have a problem with the echoing of the wrong number when I enter a phone
number. If I try to enter something like 555-1212, I type it in and I could
hear 555-1712 but, know that the right number has been entered. If you pay
attention to what you are typing, just ignore what VO echoes and you will be
just fine. Its annoying but its workable.

Simple question about the Logitech keyboard 811

2015-03-04 Thread Neal Ewers
Hi, As there will be no one here whose eyes work when I get my keyboard, I
wonder if someone can tell me where the keys are that allow you to pair with
3 different devices. I think I read, or was told, that one presses one of
these keys, goes to settings in the phone, selects the keyboard and it pairs
itself. Whether or not this works, it would be nice to know where these keys
are. Oh, one other thing. Is there a hide keyboard key like there is on the
apple keyboard, or does one simply turn off the keyboard when one wants to
use the device keyboard?

Thanks much for your help.

I love my Logitech 811 keyboard

2015-03-04 Thread Neal Ewers
Sorry Apple, Perhaps if you would fix the power button problem, I would have
stayed, but I have moved on. As people have said on this list, it is very
nice to type On. As someone also said, the keys are concaved. I wondered
about this at first, but my fingers fit perfectly into them. The keys are a
little smaller than those on the Apple keyboard, but there is space around
them so in the end, it is as large as the apple keyboard but you can locate
the keys better because of the space instead of having them all run
together. I realize keyboards are a personal preference, and I'm not trying
to talk anyone into purchasing this one. I just wanted to say that I like it
a lot. It was quite easy to pair as well.

Brailliant 32 cell display experience

2015-03-04 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi,

I'd like to know your experience with Brailliant 32 Braille displays. Please
e-mail off list if you feel it might clutter the list. Purchasing a new
Braille display is such an expensive thing that I felt I would like to ask a
question here. please be as honest as you always are. I think the display is
by HumanWare. I don't need notetaking facilities but I do need to know whether
the display pairs easily with iDevices, and mac computers and whether it can
pair with more than one device. I also need to know whether one can use it to
enter text.

Many thanks listers, My old display - very old display - is showing signs of
having to retire so it is a major investment for me. For a while I considered
focus blue 14 but then I hear there may be problems with updating firmware and
14 cells is really so few that I'm worried about constant panning when reading
in ibooks or nook or kindle.

Many thanks

Andrew

Re: Simple question about the Logitech keyboard 811

2015-03-04 Thread Kliph
Yes, there is a hide keyboard button, it’s just to the left of the escape key.
As for pairing the device, it uses the f1 through f3 keys. Select witch one
you want your device to be paired with, then push the pair button on the
underside of the keyboard. It is located just under the delete or backspace
key. HTH

stayed, but I have moved on. As people have said on this list, it is very nice
to type On. As someone also said, the keys are concaved. I wondered about this
at first, but my fingers fit perfectly into them. The keys are a little smaller
than those on the Apple keyboard, but there is space around them so in the end,
it is as large as the apple keyboard but you can locate the keys better because
of the space instead of having them all run together. I realize keyboards are a

Re: DRM removal

The fair use provision in the copyright act makes it unclear as to
whether breaking DRM for your own personal use violates the DMCA. Here's
one of many articles talking about this issue
http://gizmodo.com/5596571/federal-judge-ok-to-break-drm-for-fair-use

There has been an exception made to the DMCA stating that breaking DRM
to make an accessible copy for personal use is in agreement with the
fair use provision of the copyright act, but the extention of this
exception from year to year is not a given. Here's more on this issue

DRM the bane of conversion

DRM, as noted, stands for Digital Rights Management.

Let's think about physical books for a moment. With a physical book,
you can lend, and sell that book. But when you do either, you have
to go without the book. With e-books, that is not the case. E-books
are just files on the computer and they can be copied any number of
times and given away any number of times. DRM is designed and was
created to prevent unlimited copying of an electronic file (although
some e-book users would also note that it is a handy way for
companies to try to lock them into specific brands).

DRM affords different books various rights as determined by the
publisher and seller. Some can be read on more than one device. Some
will allow for partial copying and printing. Simply put, DRM
restricts what you can do with an e-book.

Any e-book with DRM cannot be converted to a different format. This
is because conversion itself would require the removal of the DRM.
Not all e-book formats support DRM and different e-book formats
support different sets of privileges granted by the DRM. There is no
way to move the DRM with the content when converting; thus DRM
prevents conversion.

You might be tempted to look for some way to remove DRM from e-books
in order to facilitate conversion.

A word of warning about doing this:

In the USA there is a law known as the

Digital Millennium Copyright Act

(DMCA). This law makes it illegal to circumvent a copy protection
system (DRM). It also makes it illegal to produce tools, distribute
tools, and aid in circumvention. Not everyone lives in the USA, but
many countries have similar laws. Check your local laws and realize
that even though you my may only want to read an EPUB book you've

Once you install the app, then launch it, I found the first few screen were
not helpful unless I toggled VoiceOver on and off, then the text refreshed
 for the introductory material.
Once you get to the page 3 of 3 that has a button on it for finding out how
to get started, I don't recall exactly what it said but it is the only
button, double tap that and it will tell you that you have to go into
settings, general, keyboard and double tap on add keyboard and then pick
 Shortcut Keyboard and double tap.
Then, there is a allow full access which is off that you need to turn on.
He says he won't upload anything you type, though there is a warning about
 that.
Once you enable full access, then go back to the app and launch it again.
There will be a couple sample phrases and an add button.
Once you add a phrase you want to just be able to select later, there is a
 save button.
Then, when writing an Email, or anywhere else, just go to the bottom of the
screen to the left of the spacebar and find the next keyboard button.
Double tap that until the name Shortcut Keyboard shows up.
Then, above the onscreen keyboard will be all the phrases you have saved in
the app and you just double tap the one you want to insert at that point.

RE: Simple question about the Logitech keyboard 811

2015-03-04 Thread Rick Alfaro
Neal and Cliff, as I recall, for me, I had to press the paire button first then
f1 f2 or f3. Perhaps I’m wrong but if Cliff’s way doesn’t work try it this way.
The Pair button is on the back of the keyboard, near the upper right hand
cornor, about 2 inches down from the top and 1 inch over from the right.

Yes, there is a hide keyboard button, it’s just to the left of the escape key.
As for pairing the device, it uses the f1 through f3 keys. Select witch one
you want your device to be paired with, then push the pair button on the
underside of the keyboard. It is located just under the delete or backspace
key. HTH

nice to type On. As someone also said, the keys are concaved. I wondered
about this at first, but my fingers fit perfectly into them. The keys are a
little smaller than those on the Apple keyboard, but there is space around
them so in the end, it is as large as the apple keyboard but you can locate
the keys better because of the space instead of having them all run together.
I realize keyboards are a personal preference, and I’m not trying to talk
anyone into purchasing this one. I just wanted to say that I like it a lot.
It was quite easy to pair as well.

Hi Cheryl,

First, I'm sorry that I've been a few days in getting round to look at this but
life has been hectic here and I just haven't had much time to read mail, never
mind answer it!:)

Anyway, I've done the following and got no success:

First I ensured Footnotes was enabled in Settings.

Second I chose a Bible that I know should have Footnotes, so I settled on the
KJV!

I chose verses that I felt sure should have footnotes. On listening through the
chapter, I could find no indication that there was a footnote. I looked at the
end of the chapter and still found nothing. Finally, I highlighted verses, then
checked again. I still didn't find anything!

I'm wondering if they appear in a different colour but, even if they do, I
couldn't think of another way to find them.

I have, in the past, sent in bug reports but not for ages and will have to look
again on how to do this.

Have you thought of anything else we may, or should we now file a bug report?

I'm so sorry not to come up with better news!

This sounds interesting. Is there a help document anywhere, please! Otherwise,
could you point me to the podcast! Thanks!

this app was highly touted by Garth Humphries on his podcast. It works very

shortcuts like the built-in keyboard shortcuts does.

The app is free today. So you only have a couple of hours left to take
advantage of it.

RE: Any Issues Boarding A Flight with the External Battery Pack

2015-03-04 Thread SSEric
I understood that to mean shipping batteries in quantity, not the individual
having one. I think the issue is in the cargo area, which is not
pressurized.

I could be mistaken.

Hi Jonathan,

I was taken back a bit when I heard this news story this morning. I'm
seriously thinking on updating my external battery to handle a larger charge
capacity. Your right,!!! How in the world could any airline enforce this
crazy regulation? The next chance I have to fly will be in the summer I'll
have to choose my airline wisely LOL.

Hi Jonathan,

I'm going to change the subject line. I just heard on the radio this morning
that United Airline has joined Delta in banning lithium batteries on their
flights. Have you had any problems carrying on the external battery pack in
your tech carry on? I know that you travel more than I internationally.
Since the Anker battery pack is larger than my New Trent 7000, I want to
replace it with a larger one. Thanks for your advise in advance.

RE: Shortcuts Keyboard app

2015-03-04 Thread Richard Turner
Once you install the app, then launch it, I found the first few screen were not
helpful unless I toggled VoiceOver on and off, then the text refreshed for the
introductory material.
Once you get to the page 3 of 3 that has a button on it for finding out how to
get started, I don't recall exactly what it said but it is the only button,
double tap that and it will tell you that you have to go into settings,
general, keyboard and double tap on add keyboard and then pick Shortcut
Keyboard and double tap.
Then, there is a allow full access which is off that you need to turn on. He
says he won't upload anything you type, though there is a warning about that.
Once you enable full access, then go back to the app and launch it again.
There will be a couple sample phrases and an add button.
Once you add a phrase you want to just be able to select later, there is a save
button.
Then, when writing an Email, or anywhere else, just go to the bottom of the
screen to the left of the spacebar and find the next keyboard button.
Double tap that until the name Shortcut Keyboard shows up.
Then, above the onscreen keyboard will be all the phrases you have saved in the
app and you just double tap the one you want to insert at that point.

HTH,
Richard

Re: Accessible html editor

2015-03-04 Thread Richard Turner
Voice Dream Writer can export as html. If you use the number signs to mark up
headings, it exports the heading codes to the html document.
I'm going to assume that bullets, italics will also export, and probably
paragraphs. I need to do more experimenting, but this is rather promising.
