RE: itunes radio question

2015-06-19 Thread Brett
Hi Don,

It is configurable to a certain extent. When the station is playing, you will
see a "like or dislike song" button, If you tap on that button, you will open a
pop-up window with a "Play more like this" and a "Never play this song" button
plus a couple of others.

If you want to tailor the station to better meet your needs, Click the Play
more like this button on the songs you like and click the Never play this song
button when a song comes on that you don't like.

Hope this helps,
Brett.

Subject: itunes rajio question

Hi all,
My wife has a stream called "onedayradio" on her itunes radio and I really like
the music selections.
I can geoneeadradio on my phone but the type of music is very different and
raally don't care for it.
Does this mean onedayradio is somehow configurable? If so, how do you do it?

Thanks,
Don

On the subject of Zello

2015-06-19 Thread Jan Kleinhans
Hi all

I am curious to know who might be using Zello with success on their idevices.
I have started to use it, and for the most I can do the basic things. I am
wondering about one particular function though. There is suppose to be a
"solo" mode, which you use when you have multiple channels connected in Zello.
If one use the "solo" mode, you won't hear any conversations happening on your
other connected channels. I don't seem to find that particular solo slider,
and to achieve the same result, I have to disconnect all the other channels
first before using a channel of my own with no interfering speech happening.
Does anybody know you one gets access to that solo slider, or is it not
accessible using voiceover? Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Jan Kleinhans

Re: Replacing Braille Notetaker with iDevice

2015-06-19 Thread Jonathan Mosen
Hi Joe, I want to address your question about Braille input in iOS. In my view
it is not fit for purpose. I don't know what it is about Braille input Apple
doesn't get, whether the blind people they consult with about these things
aren't Braille users, or what the deal is. They have the financial and
technical resources to fix the issues if they were of a mind to, but sadly it
appears we are going to see another major release of iOS without appropriately
robust Braille input being available.
As you know, some manufacturers have chosen to do Apple's work for them, and
work around the woeful Braille input in iOS by keeping text in a buffer, then
sending it to iOS all at once. I guess this is a pragmatic response, but it
also let's Apple off the hook. Apple is a mainstream technology company, but
they have also made the choice to be a screen reader company, and I don't
believe they should be held to any lesser standard than any other screen reader
company.
They are receiving awards and praise and I don't begrudge them any of it. It is
well deserved. But those of us who are passionate about not just the spread of
Braille, but the very survival of Braille, need to stand up and be counted.
There's no doubt that notetaker products can no longer keep up with the
phrenetic pace of technology, if they ever really could. So just in terms of
the range of things that can be done, getting an iThing is probably a better
bet than a notetaker. And some adults may well be confident enough in their
Braille skills to work around the shortcomings in Apple's Braille input.
What really concerns me though is the kids, and in this case I believe
notetakers will have a place unless and until Apple get it together when it
comes to Braille input.
I am pasting below a blog post I wrote a couple of years ago called "The Apple
Braille Crisis, it's got to be fixed for the kids". While some minor changes
were made in iOS 8, it is mostly still relevant. Here it is.
People from all walks of life, not just blind people, can get extremely
partisan about their technology preferences. Anything their team does is
unquestionably wonderful, while anything another company does is rubbish,
simply by virtue of the fact that it’s the other guys who did it. If you
criticise the company such people support, you’ve committed heresy.
As blind people, I don’t believe we have the luxury of being so childish.
Unemployment is high. Misconceptions abound regarding how capable we can be in
the workplace, and in society as a whole. We need to be open to all solutions,
and where possible, use the best mix of technology we can to be as productive,
functional and self-reliant as we can.
To be clear, I have enormous admiration for the way Apple has changed the game
in assistive technology. When they released VoiceOver in 2009, I was concerned
that Apple might do just enough to get people off its back regarding the
inaccessibility of the iPhone. But that has not been the case. With every
release, Apple has added tangible enhancements such as alternative forms of
input, innovative ways for us to use the camera, and so much more. So Apple’s
commitment to accessibility is real, its ongoing, and it has earned enormous
praise and respect.
Is there a “but” coming? Yes, there is, actually., because being grateful for a
product doesn’t mean we don’t have rights as paying consumers to point out
where a product falls short. But more than that, if Apple’s innovations risk
killing off a category of product, and the literacy of our kids is threatened,
we have a moral obligation to speak up constructively and ask Apple to engage
with us as a community about fixing the issue.
The Internet is buzzing with reports of bugs in iOS 7. I’m not unduly concerned
about most of these, because I believe the majority of them will come out in
the wash. iOS 7 was a massive refactoring of the OS. I hope that there’ll be
fixes released steadily across the coming year.
However, I am deeply troubled by Apple’s ongoing apparent failure to understand
what constitutes Braille support of an appropriate quality. We’re not talking
bugs in this case, we’re talking a fundamental user interface failure – a
feature not fully fit for purpose.
Since Braille was introduced in iOS, it has supported contracted Braille in
English markets. This is a means by which space is saved, and speed increased,
by using a series of symbols and abbreviations. When one reads contracted
Braille in iOS, it works quite well. When one writes it, it is the worst
implementation of contracted input I’ve ever used on any device.
Since its inception, if you input a letter in contracted Braille which would be
the abbreviation for a word if surrounded by spaces, iOS expands the word it
represents if you pause for a short time before inputting the next character.
For example, write “p” and it will quickly be expanded to the word “people”. If
you are proofing a document you’ve brailled

I much prefer blind square. It provides more information without you
having to touch your screen. The seeing ehe app will announce streets,
but only when you arrive at them, where as blindsquare will announce
approaching streets from a distance. Also, blindsquare will frequently
announce your current address and how far you have traveled. It doesn't
have turn by turn directions the way the seeing eye app does but you
can use other apps for that. H, maybe I should do a pod cast
comparing those 2 apps.

Hello,

Can anyone currently using BlindSquare and Seeing Eye GPS draw any

directions, so what would the compelling reason be to take out a

Google Places. I trust that more than FourSquare, but that in of itself is

Both announce intersections. The main difference is that Seeing Eye has turn
by turn included in the app, while BS has to use another app like Google or

It is my understanding that the seeing eye GPS app does intersections. I
think that blind square does not do this. That's why people use them

RE: Replacing Braille Notetaker with iDevice

2015-06-19 Thread Cristóbal
Back in the day, I was considering getting an Apex note taker and in fact had
one for a few days to give it a spin. For the price though, I simply wasn't
convinced. I instead set myself up with what was at that time an iPad 2,
bluetooth keyboard and 40 cell Brailiant BI 40. The Apex would have run me
$6,000.00. Whereas the iPad set up came in at around something like $4,000.00.
I've since gotten different iPhones and iPads and bluetooth keyboards, but the
BI 40 is stil going strong.
There is absolutely no way I would ever buy a Braille note taker now. I'm sure
being blind specific, there may be a few tasks that it may be better at than an
iPad/iPhone/iPot Touch combo with a display, but not for the price difference.
That and you can do so much more with an iOS device than just being stuck with
Keysoft or whatever it's called that at this point, screams 2004.

Hi, I'm curious to hear from people who have replaced their Braille notetaker
with an iDevice. I've been toying with the idea of investing in a
U2 for reading books, taking notes and performing similar quick tasks.

Questions:

1. I've heard there are displays that let you type text and then send to the
iDevice in one burst. I don't understand the mechanics of this, but what are
the displays you know that do this?

2. Is Braille input in iOS as dreadful as some people have made it out to be? I
don't mind learning various keystrokes, but I do mind delays in transmition.

3. Is there a means to read BRF in iOS?

4. What 32-cell display would you personally recommend?

Thanks guys for any help.

I'm going to miss some, but Hims' Braille Edge or any of their modern
notetakers, and I think the newest Vario. This works by letting you type
locally, then press a single key and have the display "type" your text rapidly
into the text field. At least, that's how I understand it.

Depends on your normal speed and how often you refer to your display to check
what you're writing. I'll let someone else answer this one more fully

The Bard app can do it, with a bit of fiddling. There's no native way or

Re: Question about Voice Dream Reader capacity

2015-06-19 Thread Harry Bell
Yes, I recall that originally it was necessary to copy that library database
manually but I think an update a while back rendered this unnecessary. I too
have a large library of books on VDR and would hate to lose them so I would
also appreciate confirmation from one of the experienced list members about how
to back up that library via iTunes so a new device could be restored from that
backup with all books present and correct! Harry

Re: Question about Voice Dream Reader capacity

2015-06-19 Thread Christina C.
Shannon,

When your phone is connected to iTunes on your computer, under the file
transfer area, voice Dream Reader does have a file that you can save to your
computer. I have never saved this file and then reimported it back into voice
Dream reader. I think it is a backup of your library. I have never had any of
my books disappear from voice Dream Reader. You might consider deleting the app
and reinstalling it after you backup your voice dream reader library. You might
consider starting a new email conversation on this list asking about backing up
and restoring your voice Dream Reader library via iTunes. I’ve never done it
and so it might be best to ask to make sure that it will work.

Best of luck to you,

Re: Blind Square vs. Seeing Eye GPS

2015-06-19 Thread Grant
BlindSquare has a number of features that SeeingEye GPS lacks, such as the
ability to mark your own points of interest. I use this all the time to mark
bus bays, the entrances to train stations, and so forth. It is a great
indication to keep me on track as I’m getting on and off busses and walking
around. In my experience, BlindSquare is significantly friendlier in terms of
battery life and can therefore be used for far longer in between charges.
BlindSquare also can be operated via an external accessory such as the Apple
headset remote, which means you can get info and mark points of interest
without needing to take your phone out of your pocket and unlock it.
BlindSquare also supports displaying messages and receiving commands via a
Braille display.

In truth, SeeingEye GPS is a very basic app in comparison, and in my view has
seen only minor updates since it launched. BlindSquare is quite feature rich,
and is regularly updated with new features. However, SeeingEye GPS does have
two features that BlindSquare lacks. Those are the ability to have
intersections described in more detail, whereas BlindSquare just announces the
street names; as well as integrated turn by turn directions. Both apps offer a
feature whereby you can spin your phone around and hear intersections and
places in a given direction. Of course, you should be certain to check which
countries are supported by each app before purchase, as I do not remember this
off hand but I recall it is quite limited.

subscription with the GPS app? I do like that the Seeing Eye app can rely on
Google Places. I trust that more than FourSquare, but that in of itself is
not a deal breaker. Any thoughts on the current products would be very much

Re: Blind Square vs. Seeing Eye GPS

2015-06-19 Thread Grant
Hi Sieghard, the random announcements about your distance were likely caused by
your phone being awake and its accelerometer being triggered. You can turn this
off so that BlindSquare doesn’t react when your phone is shaken. This would
solve that particular problem.

My windows explorer problem

2015-06-19 Thread Larry Lumpkin
I got a wonderful response to my windows explorer hang problem and thought
I'd paste it here for everyone's benefit.

Hi Larry,

funny you should bring this up as I had this problem a week or so ago and
couldn't fathom out what was going on.

It turned out that the preview window in Windows explorer had got turned on
(I didn't even know there was such a thing in WE!), this meant that as you
cursored down a folder the PC would try to open each file and eventually jam
up, though it did start responding a couple of minutes later.

I don't know which screen reader you are using, but Jaws didn't show the
preview window so I was "blind" as to what was happening.

It is not unknown for Windows updates to change settings inadvertantly so
this could be an explanation as to what went on as opposed to just finger
trouble on my part.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

I am a little behind with mail, so this may have been answered, but I

The way to solve this is to ensure that voice-over can be turned off with
the three click methods. Do this when you are using a keyboard and it plays

a bit flaky, and I usually have to do this every time I start writing on the

Re: sending selected text from voice dream

2015-06-19 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
Have to crank the rotor round to Edit, then flick up/down until you find paste;
then double-tap. You have to be on an open text
input field for this to appear though.

Hi, how do you paste? I don’t hear anything that states paste with my 4s..

I've not tried that way. Instead, use the "copy" option in the menu of actions
when you double tap the second time. Then, in your
email, use the rotor to paste, and the text should appear.

Hi,
I am a little behind with mail, so this may have been answered, but I
haven't seen an answer yet!
The way to solve this is to ensure that voice-over can be turned off with
the three click methods. Do this when you are using a keyboard and it
plays up, and it does work, it reverts to writing properly once again!
It's still a bit flaky, and I usually have to do this every time I start
writing on the keyboard from scratch, but once I have started, it seems
to work okay! Hope this solves your problem

If you look at the settings, you should find a button to open another screen

I’m a bit vague about how everything else is labelled as I run BlindSquare in

RE: Blind Square vs. Seeing Eye GPS

2015-06-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I find how Blindsquare announces stuff very unreliable. Sometimes I walk and it
suddenly starts to constantly announce how far I travelled as in every few
seconds and since I have a Seeing-Eye subscription for 3 years at this point I
have taken Blindsquare off my device. I don't need GPS that often and prefer
how the Seeing Eye app gives me information. I guess that goes to show how
subjective this is, just like TTS voices and bluetooth headsets.

Hello,
Can anyone currently using BlindSquare and Seeing Eye GPS draw any
comparisons in the current versions? I tried BlindSquare over a year ago,
didn't care for it and got a refund. Now that I'm finding myself looking for
more points of interest, I'm revisiting the possibility of purchasing one or
the other. It seems BlindSquare talks to map apps for turn by turn
directions, so what would the compelling reason be to take out a
subscription with the GPS app? I do like that the Seeing Eye app can rely on
Google Places. I trust that more than FourSquare, but that in of itself is
not a deal breaker. Any thoughts on the current products would be very much
appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I appreciate your help. Andy and Shubert

I've not tried that way. Instead, use the "copy" option in the menu of actions
when you double tap the second time. Then, in your email, use the rotor to
paste, and the text should appear.

Hello, I have successfully selected text on a book with voice dream reader by
a single finger double tap to begin selecting the first word and then swiping

I did another single finger double tap. this brings up an option to highlight
the text. I then go to actions and to export highlighted text. From there,I
choose e-mail and send it to me. When I get the e-mail I open it and all it
says is sent from my Iphone.

Re: sending selected text from voice dream

2015-06-19 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
This method seems more intuative, and if all apps selected this way, that
would be a great bonus too.
Struth!... I first learned block mark, copy and paste using Wordstar commands
in DOS. It worked, it worked ruddy well; it has
gone down hill since then. On some of these most basics at least.

Re: Dice world issues

2015-06-19 Thread Mária Orovčíková

Hi List:

Not sure if this is a voiceover thing or not, but I’m having issues.
Dice world was trying to refresh this morning, and I couldn’t get it
to load so I blew the app away and restarted it. I put in what I know
to be my username and it wouldn’t take the password, so I reset it
twice using my email but I’m still having issues. This is using IOS
8.3 on one of my devices. Does anyone have the email address for the
developers so I can try and get wit them to fix this issue? I’m going
to lose the games I’ve got going, but I need to get back in there.
Thanks for any help. It’s not recognizing something in the reset
process, but I’m not sure what.
