RE: ios closing apps in the background

2016-04-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
There is Background App Refresh in Settings > General, but I doubt it would
make a difference with what you are describing. It sounds like the app just
doesn't support background operation/downloading. Probably something you should
write to the developer about and request it.

Subject: ios closing apps in the background

Hi,
i use an app called, e-downloader, that allows me to download content from
website to the phone. however, when i am downloading, i cannot switch away from
that app for too long, because when i came back to the app, the app just
relaunches. the download is gone. is there any setting in the ios operating
system to disable auto close of apps when in the background for quite some
time? this is quite anoying since i have to reopen the webpage, and downlad it
again.
using ios 9.3.1, iphone 5s.

GPS Queery

2016-04-10 Thread Leprechaun
Hi List,
I’m hoping that some kind soul might be able to remember the name of an ap, or
even tell me if I am remembering correctly.
I think I remember an ap being mentioned before that would assist with
navigating in an open space, so that you could mark your start point, drop
markers along the way, and then be able to get back to your original start
point. A friend is moving to a new apartment complex, and will have to travel
across a large open area in order to leave his garbage out each week, and then
will probably most likely want to get back home!
Does anyone know of such an ap?
Any and all ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Regards.
Jim.

Re: email attachments

2016-04-10 Thread Richard Turner

Actually, you can attach files from Dropbox, OneDrive etc.
If you check the very top left corner, or keep flicking left passed where it
says iCloud Drive, you will find a location button, double tap that and you
will find Dropbox is one of your choices.

Mark on Apple TV 4th Generation, A Quick Follow UP

2016-04-10 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I must say that I am enjoying my Apple TV 4th Gen more and more.

I downloaded the YouTube app, among many others, and paired it with my
mobile phone/Google account so now everything I do in the iOS YouTube app or
in a web browser, appears on the Apple TV app and, vice-versa. YouTube is
really quite nice, especially when on a big screen.

While I have not yet downloaded any games, I look forward to experimenting
with a few in the coming days.

I honestly didn't think there would be much difference between the 4th gen
and the second generation Apple TV. I am delighted to see that I was quite
mistaken.

Mark

Re: email attachments

2016-04-10 Thread Chris Chaffin
It is true, the native mail app now has attachments built into the app, but it
only lets you attach files from your icloud drive account. I have been trying
to find out how to get a file from my dropbox app to icloud drive, but have not
found one yet. The attachment option is on the rotor under the edit option.
You will see it as long as you are in the body of the email.
In order to attach a file to an email, I have had to use the Phone Drive app to
do so.

I first share the file from my dropbox app and open in the phone drive app.
>From the phone drive app, I select the file I want to email, then one thing
>you can do with selected files is to attach them to an email. So I just
>double tap on the email button.
A blank email appears with the file attached, and that is it.

Now if I have to send that same file again in an email, it is already in the
phone drive app, so I do not have to get it from dropbox.
I am sure there are other apps like Phone Drive that will let you send files as
attachments in an email, but do not know of any specifically.

I hope Apple will expand the sources that you are able to add attachments to
emails in a later ios version.

I hope this has been helpful.

Chris

RE: VO does not speak when typing in the Note app

2016-04-10 Thread Pinky
Hi Christopher,
I am using a Bluetooth keyboard. I went into vO and keyboard settings. Both
software and hardware keyboard setting shows character and words are selected.
I did reboot the iPad and the Note app still does not announce anything when I
type. But when I go into the mail I know there is typing being done on the
Note app cause I can get VO to read it back to me. But when I try and flick by
words or characters I cannot get it to do that. I can get that to work in the
mail app just fine. In the mail app everything is being announce when I type.
Anybody have any ideas what else I can check to see why VO is not announcing
when I type in the Note app? I cannot flick through the words or characters. I
have my rotor set on words and I also had it set on characters and still no
luck. I could get this all to work on the mail app just fine. I am stumped and
would appreciate any help on this matter.

I updated to 9.3.1 and I didn't see this problem either. In addition to
restarting your phone, I'd check the settings in Settings -> General ->
Accessibility -> VoiceOver -> Keyboard Feedback and make sure you have
characters set to be echoed. You'll see three different keyboards
listed, and you didn't mention which keyboard you're using, so make sure
you check the sections for the on screen keyboard, a hardware keyboard
and Braille screen input.

2016-04-10 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I updated to 9.3.1 and I didn't see this problem either. In addition to
restarting your phone, I'd check the settings in Settings -> General ->
Accessibility -> VoiceOver -> Keyboard Feedback and make sure you have
characters set to be echoed. You'll see three different keyboards
listed, and you didn't mention which keyboard you're using, so make sure
you check the sections for the on screen keyboard, a hardware keyboard
and Braille screen input.

Hi,
sometimes when I'm tagging someone on Facebook, and the person's name
doesn't come up by typing in the first name, I'll type the last name, and
that usually will bring up the correct person. Just a suggestion to try, if
you already haven't tried it.

RE: email attachments

2016-04-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi David,

The easy way is to go to the file in Dropbox, find the Share option and select
to share by email. This does, however, only send a link to the file to the
other person.
Somehow I remember it is supposed to be possible now to attach files from
inside the mail app, but I haven't done it before and can't see where you would
do it.
In the iOS Outlook app you can connect your Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Docs and
so on directly in the app and you can see all the files in the Outlook app and
select one to attach. Unfortunately Outlook still has the one major issue which
prevents Voiceover users to review what they wrote in the message body.
Voiceover will read the entire text if you swipe away from the message body
field and back, but if you try to navigate by character or word you just get
clicks. If or maybe I should say "When" Microsoft fixes this I'll probably stop
using the native mail app and use the Outlook app.

Regards,
Sieghard

Hi John,

I’m not Margaret, but I can tell you that you will only see the answer button
when a call comes in. This is the same for all apps which allow for Voip calls
whether it’s Skype, Whgats App, Facebook or apps like Bria and Groundwire and,
for that matter, of course this is also the case for the regular Phone app,
there is no answer button unless the phone is ringing.

The thing is that unless you set your notification style to Alerts I believe if
a Whats App call comes in there may just be a banner at the top and you would
first have to tap on that, this would then open the app and once the app is
open you can then locate the answer button (or not since it may take too long).

If you know somebody who is on Whats App I suggest you arrange for some test
calls so you can practice.

I'm not exactly sure what's being asked here, but you can use a desktop email
client to access your mail on Gmail, such as applications like Thunderbird or
Outlook. You can also use the Gmail web interface. I'm not sure what screen
reader and browser you're using, but I've used it with JAWS and Firefox with no
problem. I prefer Thunderbird myself, and I know blind people who use the web
interface and others who don't.

2016-04-10 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm not exactly sure what's being asked here, but you can use a desktop
email client to access your mail on Gmail, such as applications like
Thunderbird or Outlook. You can also use the Gmail web interface. I'm
not sure what screen reader and browser you're using, but I've used it
with JAWS and Firefox with no problem. I prefer Thunderbird myself, and
I know blind people who use the web interface and others who don't.

RE: What’s APP.

2016-04-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

If you know somebody who is on Whats App I suggest you arrange for some test
calls so you can practice.

answer button simply show up? I don't see an answer button on the screen when
no calls are being made, I'd just like to see the lay out. Is there any way to
find that button without receiving a call?

Hi Keith,

I am not 100% sure, but I don't think so. Windows 7 didn't really offer much in
terms of touchscreen support so I think it's Windows 8, 8.1 or 10 only. Anyhow,
if you have at least Jaws 15 installed on a Windows 7 machine just try to
activate it with Shift+PC Cursor and see what it does.

Hello Jenifer,

It is important to note that you do not need an actual touch-screen in order to
use the Jaws Touch Cursor.

Effectively, the Touch Cursor acts a bit like a linear form of VoiceOver. This
is to say, the cursor will find and, if possible, interact with all of the
elements on the display, including those not accessible to the Jaws or PC
Cursor. Generally speaking, use the Jaws key plus the arrow keys to explore
the display with the Touch Cursor.

I use it, almost exclusively with iTunes whenever the standard command or tab
key navigation does not take me to my desired destination.

Braille functionality notwithstanding, It is, by far and away, my favorite
feature of Jaws, these days.

Mark.

Hi Jen, I have to get to work and maybe Mark will explain more, but here is a
bit about the touch cursor.
The Touch Cursor was first introduced in 2014 with the release of Jaws 15. You
invoke the touch cursor with Shift+PC cursor. After that if you press the PC
cursor button (Numpad+) Jaws will say "Touch cursor, double tap to activate the
PC cursor".

You can read more here:

http://doccenter.freedomscientific.com/doccenter/archives/trainingdocs/2014-07-24_windows8-easi/03_AppsWithJAWS15.htm

This article talks about Jaws 15, but all that is said about the touch cursor
is the same in Jaws 17 and it gives you an overview. It is a good idea to learn
about this and all the other features of Jaws that are new because I think a
lot of fairly long-term Jaws users know what they know from way back and often
don't even take advantage of the new features. I have run into this before
where like you somebody didn't even know about a fairly major and useful
feature several years after it was first released.
I always find it useful to keep up with what is new in each version by
listening to Jonathan Mosen's FS Cast. Each year in the fall when a new Jaws
version is released he does a series of Podcasts which introduce the new
features and give an overview.

Having said all this, I actually don't use the touch cursor much in iTunes,
I'll actually have to give it a try myself tonight, but so far I can usually
get to where I want to be and do what I want to do using F6 and the tab key. I
have purchased 2 seasons of Star Trek Voyager and I'll take a look tonight and
then if you like we can chat some more, feel free to take it off-list since
it's not totally iOS related at this point, email me at siegh...@live.ca.

Sieghard

Sieghard

Sieghard

Re: Apple Watch Apps

2016-04-10 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Sarai,

AppleVis does have an Apple Watch directory, so that's a good place to look.

A couple of apps I like include: Just Press Record, which lets you record on
your watch and saves the recordings to iCloud. Hangman, which works pretty
well. AppleVis has the developer and link. Roll the Bones is a dice-rolling
app, good for role-playing games and such. Kalkulilo is a calculator that has a
watch app. Clicker is used for counting things; I used it to help with a
complicated knitting project. The Martian game has an Apple Watch component
that shows Mark Watney's vital signs, a nice addition to the game. Dark Sky
works quite well on the watch as a weather app.

HTH,
Anna

Re: apple music

2016-04-10 Thread Chris Chaffin

When an app is in the app switcher, it is running in the background, like
minimized to the task bar on a computer.
If it is closed or taken out of the app switcher, then that totally stops the
app from running, like performing an alt f4 on a computer.
So any app that is taken out of the app switcher should not run anymore without
double tapping on it to restart it.
Since you state that Spotify does continue to run even though you take it out
of the app switcher, actually, this should be considered a bug in Spotify.

Hope this helps,

Chris

RE: What’s APP.

2016-04-10 Thread Margaret
I use the What’s app a lot. I’m part of a group with my children and husband
because one of my daughters does a lot of travelling. It is very easy to use
and you can also make phone calls through it and received messages. It is
simple to answer a phone call and to listen to a message that someone has left.

Subject: Whats APP.

Hello:

Have any of you used the Whats App. My legal assistant is going to Europe for
a few weeks, and I need to communicate with him by phone. I tried the app and
couldn't get it working.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Question concerning Spotify, and some album releases

2016-04-10 Thread christopher hallsworth
It is not available, and that's fine by me. I just went on iTunes and bought
the album on day of release. Some articles have been posted already, so nough
said.
