The Life, Death, and Legacy of iPhone Jailbreaking

2017-11-25 Thread M. Taylor
The Life, Death, and Legacy of iPhone Jailbreaking

This article includes both original reporting from Motherboard and reporting
from The One Device: The Secret History of the iPhone.

The window shades are halfway down, leaving the bedroom dim. It's a grim day
in Bassano del Grappa, a town in northeastern Italy that's mostly famous for
its main import, the liquor of the same name: Grappa. I'm sitting on a twin
bed-the only place I could sit. To my left, there's a bookshelf with a stack
of Mickey Mouse comics, a staple in the childhood bedroom of every Italian
kid. In front of me, sitting in a faux racing car chair, there's Luca
Todesco, a 19-year-old who might be the best iPhone hacker on the planet.

I hand him my brand new, up-to-date iPhone 7.
"Can you jailbreak it?" I ask.

Jailbreaking is the art of hacking into Apple's ultra-secure iOS operating
system and unlocking it-and thus allowing users to customize the phone, and
write or install any software unimpeded by Apple's restrictions. At the time
I met with Todesco, in December 2016, there was no known jailbreak-no public
knowledge of this hack-for the latest iOS version that was installed on my
iPhone (iOS 10.2).
The world's first jailbreaking step-by-step procedure, discovered in 2007,
was posted online for all to see. Subsequent jailbreaks were used by
millions of people. At one point, there was even a website-called
jailbreakme.com-that was free for all to use and jailbroke your phone simply
by visiting it.
Todesco's jailbreak, however, is only available within the confines of his
bedroom inside his parents house.

Luca Todesco jailbreaks an iPhone in his bedroom in Bassano del Grappa,
Italy, in December of 2016. Photo: Lorenzo Franceschi-Bicchierai/Motherboard

Todesco, who is now 20 and is known by his hacker alias "qwertyoruiop,"
looks nonplussed. He grabs my phone and reaches for a cable on his desk,
next to a collection of two dozen iPods and iPhones, all neatly resting next
to each other as if on display. Todesco plugs in the phone, types a couple
of commands into his Mac computer, then presses enter. My iPhone's screen
turns off and on, before a white screen comes up:
"Doing it . Patching . Jailbroken," the screen reads, one after the other.
"Ha!" Todesco says, smiling.
The wall of Apple's garden has been cracked. The phone is jailbroken.

The author's iPhone 7 after being jailbroken by Luca Todesco. Photo: Lorenzo
Franceschi-Bicchierai/Motherboard

If it were the late 2000s, Todesco would probably post how he did that
online, and would release his latest jailbreaking technique to the public.
It'd then be available to all iPhone users, giving anyone a chance to unlock
the phone and install apps not approved by Apple, or tweak the otherwise
locked-in look, theme, and design of the phone's home screen.

To jailbreak an iPhone means exploiting one or more bug to disable a
security mechanism called code-signing enforcement. This allows the hacker
to run code that's not signed and approved by Apple. By doing that, the
hacker opens up the possibility to install apps not approved by Apple and
make changes and tweaks to the operating system.

Beginning shortly after the first iPhone was launched, and picking up steam
in 2008, jailbreaking was a full-blown cultural and economic phenomenon.
Hacking crews known by names such as the iPhone Dev Team, Chronic Dev, and
evad3rs were some of the best iPhone hackers of their generation. They made
both sport and crusade of breaking into Apple's ascendant phone and opening
the system up to rogue developers. A brilliant, iconoclastic software
engineer named Jay Freeman gave venue to the hackers and developers by
building Cydia, a sort of alternative App Store. At its height, Cydia, which
predated the actual App Store, was a business pulling in millions of dollars
in revenue, and offered users a way to experience the iPhone as a truly free
and open computer.

Things, however, have changed. The jailbreaking community is fractured, with
many of its former members having joined private security firms or Apple
itself. The few people still doing it privately are able to hold out for big
payouts for finding iPhone vulnerabilities. And users themselves have
stopped demanding jailbreaks, because Apple simply took jailbreakers' best
ideas and implemented them into iOS.

When the iPhone 7 was released on September 16, 2016, Todesco found a way to
jailbreak the new version of iOS within a few hours of getting his phone in
the mail. He showed off his feat on YouTube, and told Motherboard he was
able to do it so quickly because most of the bugs and exploits he needed for
the jailbreak he had already found and developed for previous versions of
iOS.

Finding these bugs isn't easy. iOS is one of the-if not the-most secure and
tough to hack operating system in the world. The code that underlies it is
mostly secret. It's hard to figure out how anything works in iOS, let alone
find flaws in it. Apple has always

Surviving Thanksgiving: iPhone-connected fitness accessories to burn off
calories

You don't necessarily need extra gear to keep in shape during the holidays,
but it can certainly help if you know what you're doing. Here are a few
hardware accessories iPhone owners might want to consider before hitting the
weights or lacing up running shoes.

Apple Watch Series 2/3
It's an obvious choice, but still a good one. The Watch is deeply integrated
with iOS, including the Health app that centralizes data from a variety of
apps and accessories. You can sync a local workout playlist, compete with
friends, and of course take advantage of general smartwatch functions like
phone calls, navigation, and Apple Pay. Its heart rate sensor is one of the
more accurate wrist-based options and if you want, you can pair it with a
chest strap.

While a Series 1 Watch is probably sufficient, we'd recommend a Series 2 or
3 if you can at all afford it. Those models are fully waterproof and
equipped with GPS, which you can use to go on runs, walks, and hikes without
your iPhone in tow. If you opt for an LTE-equipped Series 3, you can handle
things like calls and messages without an iPhone too.

If your main interest is fitness, it may be best to go with the Nike+ trim.
Even if you don't care about an extra watchface or pre-installing Nike+ Run
Club, it doesn't cost anything extra, and the perforated Nike Sport Band is
lighter and cooler during a workout.

Garmin Fenix 5
For the serious athlete or outdoorsman, there's the Fenix 5. It's expensive,
and it foregoes the touchscreen, power, and general-purpose design of the
Apple Watch, but it makes up for this with things like ruggedness, an
always-on display, and an absurd number of fitness tracking options.

Its biggest advantage may be battery life -with GPS on the watch can run for
24 hours straight, and with it off, the device can last up to two weeks. If
you're a marathoner or triathelete this might be the only way to fly, since
the Apple Watch can't last more than 3 or so hours with GPS.

The Fenix also syncs with Apple Health and chest straps, and can pair with
Android devices should you choose to switch phone platforms.

Wahoo TICKR X
Speaking of straps, the TICKR X is one of the better options out there. It
syncs with over 50 smartphone apps, including Health, and can pair with an
iPhone or a number of fitness trackers including the Apple Watch.

The strap is additionally waterproof, and equipped with onboard memory,
which makes it possible to track heart rate without any other devices and
simply sync the data later.

Eufy BodySense Smart Scale
Monitoring weight on a regular basis is vital to losing fat -or adding
muscle -and the BodySense is a cheap, Apple Health-compatible scale that
supports up to 16 users. It can also estimate body fat percentages and other
statistics, though those are normally displayed in an accompanying app and
should probably be taken with a grain of salt.

Beats Powerbeats3
Music or podcasts can be a major inspiration to push through the toughest
part of a workout. Many headphones will do, but for iPhone owners Apple's
own Powerbeats3 is a leading option. It's sweatproof, and earhooks, a neck
strap, and interchangeable tips ensure they'll stay in place regardless of
how intense things get.

Apple's W1 wireless chip gives the Powerbeats3 a more reliable connection,
and makes it ridiculously easy to pair with an iPhone. In fact doing so will
instantly pair with any other device signed into the same Apple ID.

AirPods
If you want headphones that are a little more subtle but have the same W1
chip as the Powerbeats3, Apple's AirPods are probably your bag. They're
fully wireless, yet have a reputation for staying put in all but the most
vigorous exercise. And though they're not officially sweatproof, they seem
to hold up in the gym regardless.

There are some other tradeoffs. There's very limited on-bud control, so
you'll find yourself using Siri, your iPhone, or your Apple Watch in cases
where the Powerbeats3's inline remote would do the trick. And while using a
bundled charging case can provide as much as 24 hours of battery life, the
AirPods themselves will only last for 5 hours -much less than the 12 hours
of the Powerbeats3.

Adjusting Siri volume on AppleWatch

2017-11-25 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

Is there a way to adjust the Siri voice volume on AppleWatch. I can adjust
Voiceover volume without a problem, but my Siri voice is quite loud, and I'd
like to quiet it down a bit.

I haven't been able to figure out a way to get the AppleWatch Siri to talk long
enough to try a 2 finger double tap and hold, as I do to adjust the Voiceover
volume.

Any ideas appreciated. Thanks, Keith

The Beats Solo3 headphones remain paired with all the devices it
connects to. Once it is paired for the first time, the I device
remembers the headphones and connects to them. The headphones only
connect to one device at a time though. The headphones fit over the
ear just barely. To be compact and lightweight, the headphones are
not like studio headphones that fit generously over the ear.
Unfortunately, studio headphones are so big and bulky they cannot
easily be carried in a pouch attached to my belt like the Beats Solo3.
This is why the Solo3 goes on the bus, train and airplane.

How much do you want to spend? If price is no object, then get a pair
of Beats Solo3 headphones for $300. I got a pair of these and love
them. They pair automatically with your iPhone when the headphones
are turned on. When they pair and unpair, a cool sound is played in
the headphones. The headphones have a battery life of 40 hours and a
Bluetooth range of 150 feet, thanks to a special microprocessor Apple
developed for Beats headphones. The only issue is mid-range sounds
are de-emphasized. But this is true for all Beats headphones. However
they generally sound great and offer an immersive experience. They
are not specifically noise cancelling but I wear them on the Chicago
subway system and can hear my music over the noise of passing trains
and the noise inside the car as it moves through the concrete tunnel.
They allow me to enjoy my own music while street performers have
played electric guitars or pounded on drum sets on the subway
platform. I normally don’t spend this much on headphones. I attended
the opening of a new AT experience location, which AT now calls
its stores, and won a $500 AT Gift card, which could only be spent
on hardware. At AT, experiencing an unboxing with an employee is
almost as good as it is at Apple. Like at Apple stores, the new AT
locations have high topped tables where people can stand or hang out
on stools with plastic backs. My AT sales representative, Adam,
removed each of the items in the box and placed it in my hand to feel.
He also showed me the buttons on the side of the headphones to control
the playing of music and the volume. Adam also configured my iPhone
to pair with the headphones. Purchases are made through iPads
employees carry around with them and not at a cash register by the
door.

After an unboxing, visitors can move to couches scattered around to
experience their hardware. For me, I configured the equalizer in
Spotify to maximize the rich audio from the headphones. Part of the
AT retail experience now includes free Wi-Fi, which can be used to
listen to headphones or evaluate open air speakers also sold at AT

If you want good quality, but inexpensive headphones, I strongly
suggest heading over to Ben’s Bargains and checking out the headphone
section. I have bought headphones there at a 90 percent discount to
the retail price. These are great deals throughout the year.

Thanks for this info. I was hoping they would pair with two at the same
time. I am still not quite sure if there is the band which goes over the top
of your head but do understand about the part over the ear and prefer the
smaller size.

Amazon has the set for $219.

Re: instant pot question

2017-11-25 Thread Kay Malmquist
Actually, if you go to there web site it is pretty accessible and has a lot
of recipes as well.
Also, there is an app called instant pot and there are many recipes in that.
if you do a search on your you tube app of choice for instant pot recipes
or, cooking with the instant pot, or if there is something specific that you
want like for example, cooking a roast in the instant pot or flan in the
instant pot other things will come up as well. You tube is my favorite
though. If something isn't described well enough I just share the link with
someone and ask them whatever question I might have. Hope this helps.
