18 Brutally Honest Confessions From A Former Apple Store Employee, BuzzFeed

2018-01-13 Thread M. Taylor
18 Brutally Honest Confessions From A Former Apple Store Employee. We see a
lot of nudes.
By Stephen LaConteJanuary 13, 2018, at 1:16 p.m.

1.
Sometimes we honestly have no idea WTF is wrong with your device.

2.
We see a lot of pictures you might not want us to see. We would never snoop
through a person's device, ever. But sometimes people don't realize what
they've left open on their screen when they hand it to us.

3.
We know when you're lying, even if we don't say it. You can tell us you
didn't drop your phone in water, but the liquid indicators inside your phone
beg to differ.

4.
If you're looking for special favors, manners go a long way. Lots of people
think they can scream their way into getting a free thing. It rarely works.

5.
But most of the time, we have to play by the rules no matter what. Even the
nicest folks. Sorry.

6.
Employees aren't there to upsell you on something you don't need. Our job is
to match you to the device that's right for you, even if it's the cheapest
model.

7.
And, tbh, we don't actually care if you buy anything. Most employees don't
work on commission, anyway!

8.
We don't actually give a shit when you mess with the display devices. Go
wild!

9.
...Because all those screens automatically reset themselves overnight,
anyway. Yeah, there's no way we'd be able to catch all those pranks
ourselves.

10.
We know that some people just come in to check their email or Facebook, and
we don't mind! We've got hundreds of devices lying around - go ahead and use
them!

11.
Yes, we've heard the "Are you really a GENIUS???" joke a thousand times
before. But we'll keep fake-laughing every time someone makes it.

12.
The store can get really busy - even when it looks totally empty. At any
given moment, there could be dozens of people waiting on a Genius Bar
appointment. They're not necessarily in the store!

13.
We really don't know any of the juicy corporate secrets. We aren't lying
when we say we don't know when the new Macbooks will come out or what the
new iPhone will look like. They don't tell us that stuff.

14.
No, we can't let you use our employee discount. Has any store in the history
of retail allowed this???

15.
Product launch days can be really freaking stressful. Long lines, sold-out
products, loud crowds, impatient customers...it's a lot to handle.

16.
But Apple makes the shifts a little more bearable with a lot of free food
for employees. Free pizza in the break room makes everything better.

17.
There are a LOT of meltdowns at the Genius Bar. We don't like to be the
bearer of bad news, but sometimes that's our job.

18.
But there are a lot of beautiful moments, too. Helping a grandmother learn
how to FaceTime her grandkids, helping a new mom recover deleted pictures of
her baby...that's the stuff that makes the job worthwhile.

Re: Harming battery if left on a charger all the time

2018-01-13 Thread Mike Arrigo
Most likely the battery in the iphone 8 is larger, I don't think leaving it
plugged in caused a problem. When lithium batteries are charged, the charging
circuit completely turns off, it does not go in to a trickle charge mode. Here
is some information on how charging lithium ion batteries works, actually this
site has lots of good battery information.

Re: Harming battery if left on a charger all the time

2018-01-13 Thread Mike Arrigo
Usually the battery swelling issue was caused by the separator getting
punctured within the battery itself. When this happens, a short circuit was
created. This could also happen if a charger tries to overcharge a battery but
most lithium ion batteries also have a safety circuit that will shut this down
if it happens.

Phones have been using this battery type at least since the first iphone, at

The

Handoff and Apple Watch question.

2018-01-13 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
I wonder if any list member would be kind enough to give me a pointer as to the
use of Handoff between my iPhone7 and Apple Watch series 2.

As I understand it I should be able to share certain tasks between the two
devices.

So here’s what I do, perhaps I am getting it wrong but I have had no success so
far.

If I start Mail on the watch and open a message thread.

Now if I unlock my iPhone7 am I right in assuming that the mail task should
appear in Task Switcher? If not how do I pickup the task on the iPhone?

Thanks in advance for your help and tolerance of a new Apple Watch user.

Malcolm

Re: Harming battery if left on a charger all the time

2018-01-13 Thread Christopher Chaltain
This happened to me on the iPhone 5 my employer provided me, and I most
definitely did not leave it on the charger all of the time. I know this
is anecdotal but I don't think a swelling battery has anything to do
with whether you leave your phone charging or not, but it's probably
more likely do to a defective battery or phone. Of course it's unlikely,
but maybe someone just got two phones with defective batteries.

There's a lot on the web about this, but most of the resources I've seen
claim that it's OK to leave your phone charging all of the time. The
electronics in the battery and the phone should take care of things for
you. Here's just one such article I found
http://www.businessinsider.com/safe-charge-smartphone-overnight-2017-8

Someone from Apple may tell you it's your fault since they're working
under the same misconceptions as others in the general public. they may
also tell you this because they don't want to let you know there may be
a problem with Apple's batteries or electronics in their iPhones.

said that it was me keeping the device plugged up all the time that
was the problem. Why else would the battery swell on two different
generations of iPods? What else could have caused it if not keeping
them plugged up? The 6th generation was fairly new. I wanted to get
them both fixed, but just the one cost me $150 to get repaired.

My laptop is always plugged in since I rarely use it away from the
house and the same was true with my previousl laptop and even after
over 5 years it still holds a decent charge when I do unplug it.
As other said, modern batteries can handle this easily and the problem
with the battery that swelled surely was a different issue and would
eventually have happened regardless. After all look at the Note 7
disaster where devices which weren't even plugged in at all burst into
flames.

It could harm older battery technologies such as NICD, but with
lithium ion batteries, when the battery is charged, the charging
circuit turns off, there is no such thing as a trickle charge for
these kinds of batteries, so leaving it connected to a charger should
be fine.

Hello everyone

Does it do more harm than good if I leave my iPhone 8 on a charger all
the time?

I have read somewhere that phones and tablets only have so many:
charge cycles before they can't hold a charge anymore.

I have been told by apple that they recommend not: fully discharge the
device but top it up regularly. However, I wasn't sure about leaving
it on the charger for all of the time. Obviously though, I would take
it off if I had to go out somewhere.

Thanks in advance for anyone who can clear up if leaving on charge is
either good: or bad for the overall health of an iPhone 8 battery.

Re: Door locks with fingerprint technology with Bluetooth and accessible app?

2018-01-13 Thread Kay Malmquist
Well, I wasn't so interested in Alexa because of the same reason you
mentioned. However, I am interested in the Home kit idea and being able to
change things as far as codes when away from home. Now all I have to do is
figure out the model number and where that might be. It really sucks when
the security company does not give you the paperwork that comes with all the
pieces they install. They seem to think that they no what is best and I
hate to say it, but they don't. I also have to get the installer code so
that I can change up a few things on the whole system so that I can run it
and change things as I want and need to rather than waiting for someone to
come out and do it.

Find out the exact model and Google it, you’ll find all the features,
specs and most likely a user manual in PDF.

I don’t know why anybody in their right mind would want to Alexa enable a
doorlock. Alexa has no security as far as I can tell and if somebody knows
you have Alexa and a smart doorlock that works with it all they have to do
is walk up to an open window and ask Alexa to unlock your door. If I want to
unlock my Schlage Sense with SIRI it only works if I first unlock my phone
with Touch Id or my passcode.

Not any more, quite a few electronic lock companies made fingerprint
doorlocks years ago, I had one and so did a friend of mine, and they were
the biggest pain in the neck.

Depending on how much you want to spend, you are much better off with an
electronic lock with a keypad or a smartlock which you can unlock with your
phone.

I have a Weiser electronic lock at my retail store which was actually
installed by my alarm company and which has a keypad, but it also connects
via the Zigbbee protocol to my alarm panel so I can unlock it via the alarm
app remotely.

At home we just recently purchased a Schlage Sense smartlock which has
home kit support. This means you can unlock it by telling SIRI “Unlock my
front door” or from the home app. It has also a keypad, but it’s a
touchscreen so you’d have to put at least a dot on the 5 or maybe put a
tactile dot on the 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 to be able to use it manually.

Before we bought it we had a Schlage electronic lock on the front door
and I really like it, too. It has a lock button at the top and underneat two
rows of buttons, 1 to 5 and 6 to 0. The lock button is above the 3, so in
the middle above the two number rows. This particular lock (forgot the
model) doesn’t actually have a motor so the single 9 Volt battery lasts
forever because all it does is to engage a deadbolt which you turn by hand
to lock and unlock the door. Less high tech, but also completely reliable
and we now moved this lock to our patio door.

If there are still fingerprint locks around I really advise you to stay
away from them, if you don’t want to spend too much then you can get a lock
like that electronic Schlage with the keypad I described for around $100 and
it’s super-easy to use, you can program multiple codes and it’s easy to
program it without sight, all you need to know is the master/programming
code which you can customize and then you of course need to write down the
basic commands for adding or removing a code. It's usually something like
enter the master code and press the lock button, then press 1 to add a code
followed

RE: Watch series 2 very sluggish lately

2018-01-13 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Gary and Iona,

I cannot reproduce your findings.

My Watch, Series 2, is working better than ever with absolutely no slow-down.

Could this be because I am paired to iPhone 8 Plus? I don't know. My watch is
performing as expected.

One thing, however, as with my phone, I do make it a policy to reboot my watch
at least once a day.

Hi Ioana,

yes, my wife and I both have series 2 watches bought earlier this year and have
been experiencing exactly the same issues.

It is particularly bad on the workout app which seems to hang for several
seconds, it is ok if you just leave it and let it get on with it but if you tap
or swipe too soon the watch seems to get in a mess.

I have found re-booting the watch seems to improve the speed slightly but I
feel somewhat aggrieved that such a new watch is already suffering from a
performance degradation after just one major OS upgrade.

Hi,Hi,

Subject: Re: More iPad mini 4 questions

Hi,
I’ll take a stab at some of your questions below.
So I discovered when adding all my apps to my iPad mini 4 that the iPads don’t
come with the weather app like th iPhone and iPod touch.
Can you download the native weather app. If so, what would you search for
since typing weather gave me a bunch of results.
If not can any recommend a good but free weather app if possible that works
with voiceover and can be used in Canada.
You cannot get the Apple weather app for the iPad, but I am not sure of which
apps would work in Canada. I like the Weather Channel app, or I have some apps
downloaded from local TV stations that aren’t too bad.
Next I’m assuming there’s no flashlight either since I’m not noticing one.
If you’re running iOS 11, you’ll need to look in the control center for the
flashlight button.
Next when I plug my iPad mini 4 in to my windows pc the device connects and
everything but it says it’s not charging.
Should I be concerned as my iPhone and iPod touch charge just fine when
connected to the same USB port.
Do not be concerned: it is likely because the iPad needs more power to charge.
You’ll need to use a wall outlet.
Finally I’ve done this before but don’t remember what I did but how do you get
rid of the yahoo, apple, etc. Search engines that show up on your device when
you first get it.
I’m not sure what you mean by this.

Thanks.
Jen

RE: Thoughts about some new Bluetooth toys

2018-01-13 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,

Those sleep phones look pretty good. From the product page, however, I could
not tell if they have a pair that is compatible with the newer iPhone. Or if I
need a lightning or Bluetooth adapter to use them. Lately I have been falling
asleep reading just about every night with earbuds in. which is not advisable
probably.

Hello,

I’m a huge Audible/audio book fan and often listen at night after my wife goes
to bed. I therefore am always on the lookout for the perfect way to listen so
it doesn’t disturb my wife but so it’s also comfortable for me since I often
fall asleep listening.
I often just use my iPhone and wired Earpods, but sometimes that of course
results in me waking up during the middle of the night lying on my iPhone and
with Earpods wrapped around me. I have tried a pillow speaker which I purchased
from Amazon, but it wasn’t for me. I sometimes use my Plantronics Voyager Edge
which just a single earpiece and if it ends up somewhere in the bed under me
it’s not so bad, but it’s also not quite perfect yet.

I recently purchased two larger headsets and something called a bluetooth
receiver/transmitter, here some links:

Jabra Move – link to the canadian Jabra website

Jabra Move – link to Best Buy Canada

, regular $109.99 on sale until today for $69.99

I actually bought this on Amazon.ca for $88 so seeing on Best Buy Canada on
sale for $69.99 is a bummer, but anyhow, I quite like this headset. It’s an
on-ear headset which is very comfortable and well-built. Only thing for me is
that the on/off switch which is a slider is on the right ear and the
play/pause button and volume up/down is on the left which I find a bit awkward.

It claims 8 hours of battery life and can be used in wired mode as well and I
quite like it when headsets offer both options.

Sony MDRXB950BT/B on Amazon.com

  $118.00

Sony MDRXB950BT/B on Amazon Canada $199.99

Sony MDRXB950BT review

These are over-the-ear headphones which have noise cancelling and a base boost
feature and they are awesome, but a bit larger than the Jabra Move.

I was able to get them on sale on Amazon Canada during Boxing Week for $124.99
Canadian which is under $100 US so that was a really good deal.

I love the controls, the on/off is a button, but the headphones have a very
pleasant and high quality female voice and say things like “Power On”, “Power
Off”, “Pairing mode” etc.

The play/pause is on the right ear and it’s a button but it ccan also be
pusshed up/down for skip/jump back and if you push and hold it it will fast
forward/rewind.

They sound fantastic, are very comfortable and what I would expect from Sony. I
have seen reviews where they are favouribly compared with Bose and Beats
headsets which cost much more.

The last item I bought is a dual mode bluetooth receiver/transmitter, it can
connect to a TV, stereo etc. by 3.5mm/RCA analogue or optical digital
connection and this allows you to make a non-bluetooth device into one you can
listen to with a bluetooth headset or speaker. Here the Amazon.ca link:

Miccus LONG RANGE Dual Link Bluetooth Transmitter and Bluetooth Receiver, aptX
Low Latency audio. Wireless adapter for TV, stereo, speakers, Phone, PC. Auto
optical pass through - (Home RTX 2.0)

2018-01-13 Thread Cris Ali
Thanks a million folks for this valuable information.
I do not have a security company, and I have no intention to hire one. It is
simply not needed in my area.
I asked my question because I have a tendency to lock myself out often. That
is why I thought of fingerprint or digital lock.
Now, I wonder how hard is it to install these locks. Do I need to hire a
specialist to assemble and install these kinds of locks, or I would be able to
do it myself? When it comes to the regular mechanical locks with keys, I
always change them myself without hiring a Locksmith. I am not sure how hard it
would be to install a digital lock by myself!
Cheers,

most likely a user manual in PDF.
I don’t know why anybody in their right mind would want to Alexa enable a

Not any more, quite a few electronic lock companies made fingerprint doorlocks
years ago, I had one and so did a friend of mine, and they were the biggest
pain in the neck.
Depending on how much you want to spend, you are much better off with an
electronic lock with a keypad or a smartlock which you can unlock with your
phone.
I have a Weiser electronic lock at my retail store which was actually installed
by my alarm company and which has a keypad, but it also connects via the
Zigbbee protocol to my alarm panel so I can unlock it via the alarm app
remotely.
At home we just recently purchased a Schlage Sense smartlock which has home kit
support. This means you can unlock it by telling SIRI “Unlock my front door” or
from the home app. It has also a keypad, but it’s a touchscreen so you’d have
to put at least a dot on the 5 or maybe put a tactile dot on the 1, 3, 5, 7 and
9 to be able to use it manually.
Before we bought it we had a Schlage electronic lock on the front door and I
really like it, too. It has a lock button at the top and underneat two rows of
buttons, 1 to 5 and 6 to 0. The lock button is above the 3, so in the middle
above the two number rows. This particular lock (forgot the model) doesn’t
actually have a motor so the single 9 Volt battery lasts forever because all it
does is to engage a deadbolt which you turn by hand to lock and unlock the
door. Less high tech, but also completely reliable and we now moved this lock
to our patio door.
If there are still fingerprint locks around I really advise you to stay away
from them, if you don’t want to spend too much then you can get a lock like
that electronic Schlage with the keypad I described for around $100 and it’s
super-easy to use, you can program multiple codes and it’s easy to program it
without sight, all you need to know is the master/programming code which you
can customize and then you of course need to write down the basic commands for
adding or removing a code. It's usually something like enter the master code
and press the lock button, then press 1 to add a code followed by the lock
button, then enter a 4-digit code, press the lock button and re-enter it. This

RE: Door locks with fingerprint technology with Bluetooth and accessible app?

2018-01-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Find out the exact model and Google it, you’ll find all the features, specs and
most likely a user manual in PDF.
I don’t know why anybody in their right mind would want to Alexa enable a
doorlock. Alexa has no security as far as I can tell and if somebody knows you
have Alexa and a smart doorlock that works with it all they have to do is walk
up to an open window and ask Alexa to unlock your door. If I want to unlock my
Schlage Sense with SIRI it only works if I first unlock my phone with Touch Id
or my passcode.

Subject: RE: Door locks with fingerprint technology with Bluetooth and
accessible app?

This
is just an example, but it’s that type of sequence.
I am not sure if this particular Schlage can do one-time codes, but before we
got the smartlock at my store we had a electronic keypad lock from Tamor. That
one you could set a mastercode anywhere from 4 to 8 digits long and user codes
then had to be the same length which means if you think a 4-digit code might be
too insecure this one is nice because you can do a 5 or 7 digit code which is
more unusual. Anyhow, that one also allowed for one-time codes so if, for
example, you wanted to give a plumber or electrician or a friend access to your
house without giving them a permanent code, you could set up a one-time code
and once it got used once it would no longer work. Of course with a smartlock
this functionality is even further expanded, you can give your dog walker who
picks up your dog every weekday between 8 and 8:30 AM a code which only works
during that time or you could simply ask them to call you when

2018-01-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Nobody forces you to upgrade although in my opinion a smartphone's lifespan is
limited just as the lifespan of a laptop although it can be somewhat longer. I
think a recently current iPhone can easily run for 4 or 5 years and if after 3
or 4 years you change the battery maybe longer, it would be an interesting
experiment, biut most people get rid of their phones after a couple of years
and many are now on these annual upgrade plans.
As for the temperatures in Canada that depends, move to Vancouver or even
better Victoria pon Vancouver Island and you will rarely see snow or
temperatures below freezing. Unfortunately Vancouver is also one of the most
expensive cities in Canada and, for that matter, in the world when it comes to
rents and real estate.

Anyhow, I plugged it into one of my Sonos Connect players using the optical
digital cable and at first it seemed to work great with the Jabra Move headset.

I should explore the possibility of getting a door lock that works on
fingerprint. But It must have a Bluetooth connection to the phone so that I

Are you guys aware of any such product?

These locks are quite accessible as Sieghard describes. We have one with a
touch screen which I can unlock with my iPhone or an actual key. The lock on
our backdoor has a tactile keypad. Neither lock was all that expensive and
booth are programmable. For example, the code for our housecleaners works only
on Thursday afternoon and the code for the pet sitter is active only while we
are on vacation.

I highly recommend these locks.

Yes exactly more or less premium features is why this coming November when my
plan is renewed, I’m kind of starting to do research on what the best phone
would be? I’m between the SE series with smaller screen, lacking 3D touch and
others, versus taking advantage of the 6S,&7 series with 3D touch and other
more-advanced features. If the 2nd Generation SE would include 3D tuch,
probably, but otherwise, part of me is still debating with which line to go
with! Thanks for tips.
And also some of you guys have talked about having to go with the competition
because of the prices? That’s exactly what happened with AT IN APRIL2015 WHEN
MY IPHONE 3GS HIT THE DUST, AND IT CAME TIME TO UPGRADE MY PLAN; BECAUSE THE 4S
WAS KIND OF EXPENSIVE FOR THE FAMILY BUDGET, I HAD TO FORCEFULLY SWITCH, BUT NO
GO! SEVERAL MONTHS LATER, I WAS BACK IN THE IOS WORLD, WITH A USED 4S AND HAVE
NEVER LOOKED BACK! I DON’T WANT TO COME ACROSS AN APPLE FAN BOY, BUT THATS FOR
ANOTHER LIST AND THREAD MY IMPRESSIONS OF ONE VERSUS THE OTHERS.

Re: Watch series 2 very sluggish lately

2018-01-13 Thread 'Gary Robinson' via VIPhone

Hi Ioana,

yes, my wife and I both have series 2 watches bought earlier this year
and have been experiencing exactly the same issues.

It is particularly bad on the workout app which seems to hang for
several seconds, it is ok if you just leave it and let it get on with it
but if you tap or swipe too soon the watch seems to get in a mess.

I have found re-booting the watch seems to improve the speed slightly
but I feel somewhat aggrieved that such a new watch is already suffering
from a performance degradation after just one major OS upgrade.

Hi all,

hear a ding if I flick left and right. It's often impossible to quickly read a
notification etc. Is this happening to anyone else? Any solution?
I know that older devices get slower as you update os but I would have hoped
that the watch does not suffer same fate in such an extreme fashion.
Thanks for your help and comments,

Ioana

Re: Harming battery if left on a charger all the time

2018-01-13 Thread Gerardo Corripio
And here in Mexico, it’s Virgen. And speaking of upgrades on iPhones, Telcel
(in the US., it’s Straitalk, or when a Telcel customer goes over there, the
phome’s Network status says T Mobil), Telcel too has post-paid plans in which
you get phones at reduced prices: this 5s for instance, in stores, it costs
(back in November2016 at least, the equivalent of USD$300 (Mx6000), and in
Telcel with the plan I currently have, paying the phone outright made the price
lower to the equivalent of USD$250 (MX$4800) THUS WITH THE REMAINING MX$1200,
helped in paying 6 months of the plan. This November my 24-month plan needs
renewal, nd the right to a newer phone. So yes I understand what you guys are
talking about plans, phones at reduced prices and the like. Out of the 3 main
carriers here (elcel, AT and Movilstar(Telefónica) I’ve found that Telcel has
the most deals on lans and phones. Oh and also what helps is during the plan,
you get points for each monthly bill (as long as you don’t go over) which you
save, for more reduced-prices on phones! So that’s a help as well! That’s why
I’m saying that Telcel is the more-friendly of the carriers when it comes to
plans, upgrades and the like as has been my experiences since 2012 July with my
iPhones; I was first with AT/T but switched over to Telcel some years after
because of AT not having these opportunities in getting new phones at reduced
prices.exprTeefonica )

Re: New Battery Technology - Was: Harming battery if left on a charger all the time

Lithium-Titanate is the big story in big batteries. China has a rechargeable
electric ship, spoilt by carrying something completely
unecological.

RobH.

Ps: L-T batteries are, or are round here, the size of a trailer mounted
shipping container, and used in local power sub-bstations
to kick in to cover power spikes, yet charge off the grid in between. i.e:
about 30ft long by 9ft sq on the ends and run in kv
with out put quoted in the low Mw(megawatts) range.

Subject: New Battery Technology - Was: Harming battery if left on a charger all
the time

Last winter I read an article in Science News concerning the
soon-to-be-on-the-market new battery technologies. If memory serves
me, one of these technologies is a Sodium-Ion battery. There was a second very
promising technology also being touted; this one was
some sort of Lithium-Something-or-other technology. Hmmm, maybe it was
Lithium-Sodium but I don’t remember - suppose I should go do
some googling before posting such an e-mail.

But, the gist of that article is that are new battery technologies coming down
the pike that will offer significantly more charge
retention and recharge cycles than even the current Lithium-Ion technology.
The rub, these technologies needed to pass the safety
thresh-hold where they do not blow up or break into fire. After reading that
article, I marveled that even our familiar Lithium-Ion
batteries are not more volatile; but that technology has passed the
fore-mentioned safety test for the most part. The batteries
that were breaking into flame were indeed faulty construction not maintaining
appropriate isolation between the Lithium and Ion
components.
