Why it's meaningless to accept a GDPR privacy policy
You're drowning in these thanks to the GDPR. But they leave out something
important.
By Laura Hautala, May 25, 2018 8:52 AM PDT

The European Union's General Protection Privacy Regulation takes effect
Friday, and your email inbox has been slowly choking on alerts about the new
privacy law.
You know, the dozens of privacy policy updates you've probably received in
the past few weeks. I'm talking about updates from email providers, social
media companies, banks and what seems like every random internet service
you've ever interacted with -- all letting you know how they're collecting
and using your data.
But here's the thing: When you click "accept" on a privacy policy, even if
you've read it from start to finish, you're most likely still in the dark
about what you're consenting to. That's because privacy policies don't
really tell you about all the things that can be done with your data. With
statistical analysis and, more recently, artificial intelligence, companies
that have your data can draw all kinds of inferences about you. And they use
that in ways you might never predict.
Using information about your browsing habits -- including products you've
shopped for, websites you've visited and search terms you've used --
companies can make informed guesses about your age, location, marital status
and, according to one infamous New York Times report, whether you're
pregnant.
"The typical consumer has no idea how this happens," said Lorrie Cranor,
director of the Carnegie Mellon Usable Privacy and Security Laboratory, who
served as head technologist at the US Fair Trade Commission under President
Barack Obama.
Cue the GDPR, a new law that gives EU residents more say in how their data
gets used. The trouble is, the law doesn't apply to anyone outside of the
EU.
Making inferences from your data
Privacy policies don't make it easy to wrap our minds around how data
collection can affect us. To start with, many internet users don't
understand how data collection tools work.
That's what researchers at Syracuse University and Sapienza University of
Rome concluded after speaking with people who thought their antivirus
software could stop websites and advertisers from tracking their browsing
activity. That's reasonable, but it's also wrong.
Researchers and journalists have also found some clues as to how personal
data collection can have negative consequences, intentional or not. They did
it by creating fake ads and accounts, and seeing what tech companies did
with the data.
Reporters from ProPublica, for example, bought housing-related ads on
Facebook that excluded groups from Facebook-assigned "ethnic affinity
groups." This appeared to fly in the face of housing laws that prohibit
discrimination on the basis or race or ethnicity. The findings prompted
Facebook to stop advertisers from excluding ethnic groups from seeing
certain types of ads.
And researchers at Carnegie Mellon University created fake user accounts and
collected information on Google display ads to see indications that men were
able to view job ads that women couldn't. Google attributed the findings to
factors that weren't based on gender, like an advertiser targeting websites
visited primarily by men.
Cranor said companies don't need AI in order to know to know what they do
about us. Good old-fashioned statistics can get number-crunchers pretty far
in predicting your interests. Things can really heat up when you "add AI to
the mix," she said, and that's when "you're going to see even more powerful
predictions."
This is what has privacy experts like Cranor concerned.
New power in the EU
The GDPR could make things more transparent for residents of the EU. The law
gives people the right to specify how they want their data used. That means
EU residents can say, "Sure, collect my data, but don't use it to tailor ads
for me."
They can also request copies of all the data a company has collected about
them and ask companies to delete their data. The fines for breaking the law
are steep -- up to 40 million euros or 2 percent of a company's annual
global revenue, whichever is higher.

The law is prompting updated privacy policies for the rest of us outside of
Europe -- and not a whole lot else. Yes, some companies including Microsoft,
Apple, Twitter and Facebook have indicated they'll extend at least some
GDPR-based rights to all their global users. But that's not the same.
As Forrester analyst Fatemeh Khatibloo pointed out, the European Union isn't
going to step in on your behalf if one of these companies doesn't live up to
its promises.

Re: What to do when speaker comes on in call, and I can't get it off?

2018-05-25 Thread Arnold Schmidt
You don't put your finger over the speaker, rather, the place that normally is
against your ear. There is a sensor in there that is supposed to be able to
tell when it is against your ear. I touch this area, and rub my finger back and
forth a time or two, and it usually behaves itself for a while after that.

I take it away from my ear and then put it back a lot of times that will solve
it. Other times, I’ll take it away from my ear, put my finger over the speaker
part that goes to that year, and release it and it put it back. It’s strange,
when Wade does not work all the time.

Hi Judy

Actually you can use multiple email accounts with the gmail app.

If you are happy with the way you are currently accessing your email, then I
see no reason to switch to another app even if Google says it.

However, if you like to try out different apps, then I say go for it!

We all have choices and regardless of weather you stay with your current setup

I wish you well in finding the right email choice that suits you.

Hi Judy!
I use the Win10 mail app with four different email accounts!
I really like it, it is so simple and easy to use if all you do is send, reply,
forward, and send an occasional attachment.
You can spell check and more with the Mail app.
I use it, however, on a Windows 10 laptop, and I am not sure if you are talking
about the same thing, because this is a phone list.
I have a tutorial for the Windows 10 Mail app.

Gmail app

2018-05-25 Thread Judy Pryor
Hello all, I have got an email from gmail pressing me to get the gmail app. I
am happy with the way I use gmail now as I can see all my mail in one place. I
presume if I use the app it would only be the gmail account I could use in the
app.

Regards

Judy

Accessible Instapaper alternative

2018-05-25 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

Was wondering if anyone can recommend any screen reader accessible
Instapaper alternatives?

I in general like Instapaper and have used it for a while now, but there are
some accessibility issues on the website that have never gotten fixed and I
think I’m at the point where I want to try something else.

It’s too bad as the iOS app is very accessible and having a nice
cross-plaftform service where one can save and sort articles and whatnot for
later reading/researching is a bigtime help. I know there’s Pocket, but I
don’t know if I want to pay $50 a year to go add free and whatever other
perks they offer.

So… if there’s something that replicates what Instapaper or Pocket can do
and is accessible, I’d appreciate the input. Ideally, an iOS app too.

Thanks,

Cristobal

RE: Apple Watch randomly locking itself.

2018-05-25 Thread Jennie Facer
Hi Mark,

I reboot my watch every day also and I still have this problem. I can be
anywhere in my watch and it will go to sleep for no reason.

Hi Sieghard,

Yeah! It's weird that I have not yet experienced this. However, you can be
certain that I am now on the look-out for it.

Perhaps my experience has something to do with the fact that I reboot my watch
at the beginning of every day? Just a guess.

There is and it is set to I think 15 seconds on my watch and it locks whenever
it wants. Mark, you must be the only person I have heard from who doesn't have
the issue of the watch randomly locking. Like I said, sometimes I press the
button to unlock it and it instantly locks again or it does after just a few
seconds. At times I do something and maybe I want to change watch faces so I
get ready for a 2-finger swipe left to right or vice versa except by the time I
start the watch has locked itself again.

Hello,

I have my watch to never lock unless I take it off my wrist, and it does
just that. I have never had it lock inadvertantly unless I took the watch
off.

Thanks.

Re: Apple Watch randomly locking itself.

2018-05-25 Thread Paul Sandoval
Hey all,

I know that my watch will lock when I drop my wrist, or if I flip my wrist away
from me.
I believe this behavior is correct. I admit it does lock before I’m ready
sometimes, but I’ve usually moved my wrist slightly, and I’m again assuming the
watch thinks I’ve dropped my wrist out of viewing position.

Re: shortcuts for keyboard and word/pages on ios was Re: switching to ios only

2018-05-25 Thread Russ Kiehne

Perhaps the following will help. From the ios 11 users guide.

Use these commands (with Quick Nav turned off) to work with text. VoiceOver
reads the text as you move the insertion point.

Go forward or back one character:
Right Arrow or Left Arrow
Go forward or back one word:
Option–Right Arrow or Option–Left Arrow
Go up or down one line:
Up Arrow or Down Arrow
Go to the beginning or end of the line:
Command–Left Arrow or Command–Down Arrow
Go to the beginning or end of the paragraph:
Option–Up Arrow or Option–Down Arrow
Go to the previous or next paragraph:
Option–Up Arrow or Option–Down Arrow
Go to the top or bottom of the text field:
Command–Up Arrow or Command–Down Arrow
Select text as you move:
Shift + any of the insertion point movement commands above
Select all text:
Command–A
Copy, cut, or paste the selected text:
Command–C, Command–X, or Command–V
Undo or redo last change:
Command–Z or Shift–Command–Z

Re: Amazon Alexa creepily recorded, sent out family's conversations, USA Today

2018-05-25 Thread Chris Chaffin
Here is an updated article with Amazon's reply to the situation.

https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/24/17391898/amazon-alexa-private-conversation-recording-explanation

Amazon explains how Alexa recorded a private conversation and sent it to
another user

Alexa got seriously confused

Tom WarrenMay 24, 2018, 5:56pm EDT

Amazon has been forced to explain how Alexa recorded a private conversation and
sent it to an Echo user’s colleague without their knowledge. A Portland woman
identified only as Danielle revealed the odd series of events in an interview
with local TV station Kiro 7, claiming that an Amazon Echo device recorded a
private conversation between her and her husband and sent the recording to an
employee of the husband. In a statement to The Verge, an Amazon spokesperson
confirmed this incident took place, but it appears it was an unusual series of
Alexa mistaking conversation as commands rather than Alexa spying on users.

“Echo woke up due to a word in background conversation sounding like “Alexa.”
Then, the subsequent conversation was heard as a “send message” request. At
which point, Alexa said out loud “To whom?” At which point, the background
conversation was interpreted as a name in the customers contact list. Alexa
then asked out loud, “[contact name], right?” Alexa then interpreted background
conversation as “right”. As unlikely as this string of events is, we are
evaluating options to make this case even less likely.”

The incident does sound unlikely, but if you’re an Alexa user then you’ve
probably experienced the assistant trigger by itself during conversations. I’ve
personally had Alexa start randomly playing songs because it thought it heard
me ask for some music to be played. It’s a problem Amazon needs to address in
general, but it’s rare to see a case where successive commands mean a recording
is sent inadvertently.

Alexa was also caught up in a creepy laughing controversy back in March, after
the digital assistant mistook common words and phrases to trigger the “Alexa,
laugh” command. Alexa seemed to start laughing without being prompted to wake,
and affected users responded by unplugging their Alexa-enabled devices. This
latest incident will only increase the pressure on Amazon to start more broadly
implementing its voice recognition feature to avoid these unusual problems.

My bathroom scale is dead on me and I am in the market for a smart bathroom
scale. Any recommendation for a VoiceOver friendly smart bathroom scale?

Thanks!

And don't forget that not all of us live in the US or countries where you can
get this Amazon Music version which might be equivalent to Apple Music. Here in
Canada we only just last December got to buy the Amazon Echo speakers
officially, an Audible Canada website only was started last October and we
still don't have features such as family sharing accounts etc. We can now get
Amazon Music and videos with an Amazon Prime subscription, but when it comes to
music that includes about a Million songs which is pretty petty compared to the
40 million Apple Music has or even Deezer and Spotify. Lastly, if you want a
family account where two or more people can have their own music, preferences,
recommendations and so on Apple Music for $14.99 a month for a family
subscription is a pretty good deal, most other services are $9.99 a month and I
don't even know if Spotify or Deezer offer a family plan where you can sign in
as different accounts yet it goes under one subscription.

Hmm, maybe I'm missing something, but I don't think amazon music works on an
Apple TV. But if you don't own one of those, then I guess you're good. :)

RE: Amazon Alexa creepily recorded, sent out family's conversations, USA Today

2018-05-25 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
They say Alexa "recorded audio" and "emailed" it to a random contact. I didn't
even know Alexa can record an audio conversation or sent emails.
What do you say to Alexa so it starts recording what you say and how does Alexa
know it should stop recording your voice, i.e. how does it know if you say
"Alexa, stop" that is a command and not part of the audio recording?

Alexa creepily recorded a family's private conversations, sent them to business
associate By Elizabeth Weise, USA TODAY Updated 5 hours ago

SAN FRANCISCO - A Portland family's private conversations were recorded by
their Amazon Echo smart speaker and emailed to a random phone contact of the
father, they told a local TV station.
Amazon explained that an unforseen combination of random words in a
conversation the family didn't realize was being overheard by Alexa trigged an
action no one expected, least of all Amazon, which is now working to make sure
it doesn't happen again.
The Oregon family contacted Amazon to investigate after a private conversation
in their home was recorded by their Amazon Echo - the voice-controlled smart
speaker - and the recorded audio was sent to the phone of someone in Seattle
who was in the father's contact list.
"My husband and I would joke and say I'd bet these devices are listening to
what we're saying," Danielle, who did not want us to use her last name, told
KIRO TV in Seattle.
The family's house has multiple Echo devices that control heating, lights and
security system.
At first they didn't believe it when the colleague called to tell them he'd
received recordings of their conversations. But when he told them they'd been
talking about hardwood floors, they realized he wasn't joking.
"I felt invaded," the woman told the television station.

How it happened
Reached by USA TODAY, Amazon offered an explanation of how the highly unlikely
and yet not impossible series of events played out.
First, Amazon said, the Echo woke up when someone in the home said something
that sounded to it like "Alexa."
Next, the subsequent conversation included something that, to Alexa, sounded
like a "send a message" request.
At which point, Alexa said out loud, "To whom?"
Next, Alexa interpreted the background conversation as a name in the customers'
contact list.
Alexa then asked, again out loud, "[Contact name], right?"
Alexa then interpreted background conversation as confirming with, "Right."
While such an improbable string of events doesn't happen every day, with
millions of smart speakers in American homes hearing tens of millions of
conversations, it's with the realm of probablity.
In this instance, a random series of disconnected conversations got interpreted
by Alexa as a specific and connected series of commands.
It doesn't appear that the family members actually heard Alexa asking who it
should send a message to, or confirming that it should be sent.
That's probably a function of how good the Echo's far field voice recognition
is. Each speaker has seven microphones which are arrayed so the cylindrical
speaker can pick up voice commands from far away or even in noisy rooms with
lots of conversations going on.
Amazon says it is evaluating options to make cases such as happened to the
Portland family less likely.
But given that Forrester predicts by 2020 almost 50% of American households
will contain a smart speaker, expect more such confusions in the future.
