RE: Upcoming free course reminder

2019-01-08 Thread 'David Quarmby' via VIPhone
Hi Matt,

I’m interested in joining the Voiceover In & Out training ; is this via email
or is it via Zoom or another app like that.

My concern is that I am in the UK and would not want to be doing it late at
night.

I would be grateful if you could send me some more details.

regards

About Backups for iOS Devices, Apple Support

2019-01-08 Thread M. Taylor
About backups for iOS devices
You can copy and save the information on your iOS device by backing it up.
If you replace your device, you can use its backup to transfer your
information to a new iOS device.

Decide which method is best for you
This article can help you decide which backup method is best for you. In
case you ever need an alternative backup, you can make a backup in iCloud
and another in iTunes.

iCloud
. Stores backups in iCloud
. Offers up to 2TB of storage (your first 5GB are free)
. Always encrypts your backups
. Lets you create and use backups from anywhere with Wi-Fi

iTunes
. Stores backups on your Mac or PC
. Storage depends on your Mac or PC's available space
. Offers encrypted backups (off by default)
. Lets you create and use backups from your Mac or PC

Learn how to make a backup or restore your device from a backup.

iCloud backups
With a Wi-Fi network connection, you can make a backup of your device using
iCloud. You don't need to plug your device into a computer or even be at
home to back up with iCloud.
iCloud backups include nearly all data and settings stored on your device.
iCloud backups don't include:
. Data that's already stored in iCloud, like Contacts, Calendars,
Notes, iCloud Photos, iMessages, Voice Memos, and text (SMS) and multimedia
(MMS) messages*
. Data stored in other cloud services, like Gmail and Exchange mail
. Apple Mail data
. Apple Pay information and settings
. Touch ID settings
. iCloud Music Library and App Store content (If it's still available
in the iTunes, App, or Apple Books store, you can tap to re-download your
already purchased content.)
Learn how to make an iCloud backup or how to manage iCloud storage and
delete backups that you no longer need.
* When you use Messages in iCloud or Voice Memos, or turn on iCloud Photos,
your content is automatically stored in iCloud.

iTunes backups
>From your Mac or PC, you can make a backup of your device in iTunes. Syncing
your device with your computer isn't the same as making a backup. An iTunes
backup includes nearly all of your device's data and settings. An iTunes
backup doesn't include:
. Content from the iTunes and App Stores, or PDFs downloaded directly
to Apple Books
. Content synced from iTunes, like imported MP3s or CDs, videos,
books, and photos
. Data already stored in iCloud, like iCloud Photos, iMessages, and
text (SMS) and multimedia (MMS) messages
. Face ID or Touch ID settings
. Apple Pay information and settings
. Apple Mail data
. Activity, Health, and Keychain data (To back up this content, you'll
need to use Encrypted Backup in iTunes.)
Learn how to make backups in iTunes, how to find them on your Mac or PC, and
how to delete backups that you no longer need.

Can I use my device's backup for another kind of device, like an iPhone
backup for an iPad?
While you can restore a device from a backup of another kind of device, like
using an iPad backup for an iPhone, certain types of content won't transfer.
This content includes photos, Messages and attachments in Messages*, Voice
Memos, and apps that aren't compatible with the device that you're setting
up. For example, apps compatible only with iPad won't transfer to your
iPhone.
* If your devices use iCloud and Messages in iCloud, your iMessages and text
(SMS) and multimedia (MMS) messages are automatically stored in iCloud.

Re: Instant Pot makes Google Assistant your new sous chef

I'm not sure I agree with this. A lot of blind people have Google Homes.
I mean they're perfectly accessible. That doesn't mean that more people
won't have access if Alexa is supported, but I don't think it's a true
assumption that most blind people are using Alexa.

Instant Pot makes Google Assistant your new sous chef

It was only a matter of time, really. Instant Brands has announced

that its Instant Pot

Smart WiFi pressure cooker now supports Google Assistant, making it
possible to start cooking or check on the status without pulling out your
phone or peeking at the tiny display. It's the height of culinary luxury,
but it could be incredibly helpful if you'd rather not drop what you're
doing to start your rice or check on your brisket.

https://www.engadget.com/2019/01/07/instant-pot-google-assistant-support/

The cooker officially sells for $150 with a 6-quart capacity. You probably
won't go out of your way to get an Instant Pot for Google Assistant support,
but it could make the ultra-trendy device feel more at home with the rest of
your connected kitchen devices

Couldn't you also install google Assistant on your iPhone or other smart
phone and use it to control things like the InstaPot?

On 1/8/19 11:27 AM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote:

Hello,

I just read the article and while I agree that Instant Pot hopefully
should make accessibility improvements to the app, the Google
integration I think is a very good thing and certainly would be a
work-around for now. I know for example how often I use, for example,
the Honeywell Home app to control my thermostat which is not often
even though it's fully accessible. But it's much easier and quicker to
just tell Alexa to set the temperature to a certain level.

As for Alexa integration I guess we'll have to wait and see, it is not
mentioned in the article and I think while many of us have Alexa
households simply because they were first, more and more people will
have both Alexa and Google simply because I find that the Google
Assistant is so much better at things than Alexa is. I just only got a
single Google Home Mini which came as a free bonus with the Nest Hello
video doorbell I bought and I am very impressed how easy it is to get
it to do things without installing all these skills you have to set up
with an Alexa. Phone calls also are of way better quality and I look
forward to the Google Assistant to be available on my Sonos speakers
which will be at some point this year, most likely in the first half.
I can totally see myself using the Google Assistant a lot more than
Alexa for common tasks and after all, currently the Google Home Mini
is on sale at Best Buy Canada or Walmart Canada (and probably other
places) for $39 Canadian which means when you find a deal you can
probably pick it up for $29.99 US from Best Buy, Walmart, Target or
other places in the US so not such a big investment to add one or two
of them to your tech arsenal.

Finally, in the article there was a name and email for a press contact
from Instant Pot and I wrote the following letter to them. All of
those who contributed tot his thread and who seem to care about
Instant Pot accessibility hopefully take a few minutes to do the same
so Instant Pot can see that this is important not just to a single
person. Here is what I wrote:

Hello,

I just saw the article about Google Assistant integration for the new
Instant Pot WiFi. My name is Sieghard Weitzel and I live in Smithers,
British Columbia. I am blind and use an iPhone with Voiceover, Apple's
built-in screenreader which allows visually impaired users full access
of the iPhone.

When Instant Pot first came out with the Bluetooth Smart Cooker and
the corresponding app many blind people praised them for offering the
product and, what was more, a fully accessible app which works with
Voiceover. I am on a Google list of over 2,000 blind and visually
impaired people where the discussion focus is the iPhone, iOS, apps
and accessories. When Instant Pot finally released the new WiFi cooker
quite a few people jumped on it especially since this happened just a
few weeks before Black Friday and apparently in the US the Instant Pot
WiFi was available at a very good price. I should mention that as a
Canadian I was extremely disappointed that this Canadian company did
not find it necessary to offer a special for the Instant Pot WiFi here
in Canada. I check Amazon Canada all the time and at best saw the
Instant Pot WiFi for $189 and it seems to move between that and
$199. In the US the product was on sale for $119 US, had Amazon Canada
offered a Black Friday or Boxing Day special for $149.99 or even
$159.99 I would already be the owner of the device as well. I really
dislike the discrimination that seems to go on between prices for the
same product on Amazon.com and Amazon.ca.

In any case, those who did buy it soon posted disappointed messages
saying that the new app to control the Instant Pot WiFi had serious
accessibility challenges. Parts of the app could be used with
Voiceover, but I believe it is not possible to check on the status of
whatever is cooking, the recipes section of the app apparently is
completely inaccessible and I know many have written to Instant Pot to
provide their feedback. I called Instant Pot support/sales a few times
when I was looking to buy a connected cooker and around Black Fridayin
2017 one of the reps actually told me that he advised against buying
the Bluetooth model since it would be replaced by a new connected
cooker in the first quarter of 2019. It obviously took longer for the
new WiFi pot to come out, but the rep also mentioned that Instant Pot
was committed to accessible products, has that changed?

I just read a discussion thread on the Viphone list (that is the name
of the Google group) after somebody posted the article about Google
integration where people are worried that Instant Pot Brands may
consider this integration as the solution to the accessibility issue
and that since a blind person could use voic

Re: Unsubscribing from a subscription service on your iPhone?

2019-01-08 Thread Robin Frost

Hi,
I'm wondering about a related point regarding subscriptions which one pays
for via iTunes Store I.E. ones that show up in the area Jennie references.
Once one is cancelled is there a way to delete or hide it or make it go away
so you don't see it anymore? I've a few that I cancelled but they still show
up there and it annoys me.

thanks for any light anyone can shed on this for me.

Hi there,

Go to settings, then double tap on the first settings group which is your
name. Now double tap on iTunes and App Store. Now double tap on your Apple
ID again. You will have to use your face Id or fingerprint to view but you
want to double tap on view Apple ID. Now you cal flick right to
subscriptions and work with them there.

Re: Is this app voiceover friendly?

2019-01-08 Thread Andy Baracco
I believe so, but it works in conjunction with a patch that you wear, and
apparently you can scan the sensor in the patch with your iPhone camera.
The patches are expensive, I believe $75, and they have to be replaced every
two weeks. insurance may or may not cover it.

RE: Instant Pot makes Google Assistant your new sous chef

2019-01-08 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
Yeah, it’s not even that I’m anti this or that or even stressed out about my
privacy per say. I mean, I have a gmail account and use Google… Speaking to my
house or being so connected in that way doesn’t call my attention yet. Maybe if
there’s a killer device or task that comes out and I just have to have it,
maybe, but for now, I get my fill with Siri (which still sucks bigtime nearly 8
years later) and the Google assistant on my phone

Again, it's everybody's choice as to what level they embrace these smart
devices, but you only have to look at the headlines and articles coming out of
Las Vegas these days where the Consumer Electronics Show kicks off today to see
what tune is being played.

No wonder companies like Instant Pot who already make smart/connected devices
jump on the voice control bandwagon.

Yeah, I know numbers have come out that 100 million Alexa devices have been
sold. X number of Google smart this and that as well and I wouldn’t even be
surprised if our phones were already spying on us, but I so far haven’t had the
itch to dive into the in-home smart speaker/assistant thing quite yet. Not
swearing it off completely forever and ever, but for now? I’m still going to
pass.

This is likely more Instant Pot responding to the market and how people are
using their connected devices. It would only make sense for them to come out
with similar Alexa support eventually.

Nothing wrong with Google integration. But for those of us who don’t care to
get involved with Google and it’s ubiquitous assistant, not a solution at all.
That would be true if it were only working with Alexa or with homekit. Although
for people on this list, I suppose nobody would complain if it was homekit
only. Smile.

Hello,

I just read the article and while I agree that Instant Pot hopefully should
make accessibility improvements to the app, the Google integration I think is a
very good thing and certainly would be a work-around for now. I know for
example how often I use, for example, the Honeywell Home app to control my
thermostat which is not often even though it's fully accessible. But it's much
easier and quicker to just tell Alexa to set the temperature to a certain level.

As for Alexa integration I guess we'll have to wait and see, it is not
mentioned in the article and I think while many of us have Alexa households
simply because they were first, more and more people will have both Alexa and
Google simply because I find that the Google Assistant is so much better at
things than Alexa is. I just only got a single Google Home Mini which came as a
free bonus with the Nest Hello video doorbell I bought and I am very impressed
how easy it is to get it to do things without installing all these skills you
have to set up with an Alexa. Phone calls also are of way better quality and I
look forward to the Google Assistant to be available on my Sonos speakers which
will be at some point this year, most likely in the first half. I can totally
see myself using the Google Assistant a lot more than Alexa for common tasks
and after all, currently the Google Home Mini is on sale at Best Buy Canada or
Walmart Canada (and probably other places) for $39 Canadian which means when
you find a deal you can probably pick it up for $29.99 US from Best Buy,
Walmart, Target or other places in the US so not such a big investment to add

Hi Mary,

Fair enough, but all I can do is again to point out that using Google Assistant
for basic control of smart home devices is not giving Google that much more
information about you than when you do a Google search for a recipe, other
piece of information or product. If you are so concerned about giving up some
of your privacy you should not have an Alexa, either, you should in fact not
have any smart home devices, smart phone or use the internet in any way. I am
quite reconciled with the fact that if I want the convenience of such products
and services that I need to share some of my preferences and while I agree that
Apple is probably still the least likely to use that information by virtue of
their business model being hardware not software or services, it is what it is
and there is a reason why Google Assistant integration and Alexa are so wide
spread compared to Apple's HomeKit.

Hi Reg,

That sounds like a good option at a good price and checking the differences I
would now probably have ordered the T6 instead of the T5. When I bought the T5
I did so with I think it was Aeroplan points and they are not that different,
one difference is that the T6 allows you to connect additional indoor or
outdoor sensors so for example you could buy whatever compatible sensor that
would be and put it in a different room.

Take care,

Hey Sieghard and good morning.
I ordered the Honeywell Lyric U T6 WIFI Thermostat from Amazon for $146.
Fingers crossed that it will be an easy installation and that it will work well
with Google as promised!

Will review it when installed.

Hi Reg,

Looks like currently the Apple Store, Best Buy or Home Depot are good places to
buy the Honeywell Lyric T5
There don't seem to be any deals, it's mostly the same price except that Home
Depot sells it for an even $179.00, the Apple Store is $179.95 and Best By is
$179.99.

Home Depot also mentions that depending on your province you may qualify for a
rebate, you'd have to check if something like that is available in Ontario.
Below are the links:

Hi Sieghard. I haven’t ordered the Honeywell thermostat yet, it’s on my to do
list, hopefully today.
I now have two Google Mini’s and one Amazon Echo Plus with Hub.
Now that I am beginning to make my home smarter I have discovered that the
Amazon Hub that I bought over a year ago offers less flexibility than my google
minis.
After reading your assessment of how both speakers handled several tasks, I
agree with your conclusion. I continue to be amazed at how intuitive Google
Mini is and rate it head and shoulders above Alexa.

Before I order that Thermostat, I’m wondering if you know which Honeywell is
the newest and greatest?

Hi Reg,

Did you just order it or is it already hooked up? As for the Google Home I must
say that I am impressed with it and while I'll put my thoughts in a separate
post along with my review of the Nest Hello video doorbell I just bought for my
business, I think I like it a lot more than my Echo speakers. Of course the

Hi everyone another small sonos question. I did read on their community forums
that some ppl have problems with other people connecting their spotify to the
persons sonos speakers when this is not wanted. I am presuming that this can
only be done if you are both on the seem wifi network?

I dont really fancy suddenly hearing strange music coming through my speakers
but my wifi network is well protected soI am assuming this wont be a problem.

Thanks in advance for any info,

Greetings, Anouk,

Instant Pot makes Google Assistant your new sous chef

It was only a matter of time, really. Instant Brands has announced

  that its Instant Pot

Smart WiFi pressure cooker now supports Google Assistant, making it possible
to start cooking or check on the status without pulling out your phone or
peeking at the tiny display. It's the height of culinary luxury, but it could
be incredibly helpful if you'd rather not drop what you're doing to start your
rice or check on your brisket.

https://www.engadget.com/2019/01/07/instant-pot-google-assistant-support/

The cooker officially sells for $150 with a 6-quart capacity. You probably
won't go out of your way to get an Instant Pot for Google Assistant support,
but it could make the ultra-trendy device feel more at home with the rest of
your connected kitchen devices

RE: Ecobee4, and Nest gen3 Smart Thermostats

2019-01-08 Thread Reg Sullivan
Hey Sieghard and good morning.

I ordered the Honeywell Lyric U T6 WIFI Thermostat from Amazon for $146.

Fingers crossed that it will be an easy installation and that it will work well
with Google as promised!

Will review it when installed.

Cheers….Reg
